Background and History

At six, Lin Yuan awakens a bamboo fishing rod in Holy Soul Village. Su Yuntao declares it a useless Martial Soul and finds no innate Soul Power, but the Myriad Worlds Fishing System identifies the rod’s true name and directs Lin Yuan to the river. His first catch raises him to Level 5; he releases the fish for an additional reward 1.

Yu Xiaogang witnesses Lin Yuan’s fishing-based growth and offers to help him enter an academy. Lin Yuan agrees to teach him fishing, but insists they be “fishing buddies” rather than teacher and disciple. He joins Tang San at Flender’s academy, where his catches provide food as well as a means of cultivation 2 3 4.

Lin Yuan later joins Shrek’s Elite Tournament team. He coordinates its fighters through vibrations in his fishing line and helps defeat Spirit Hall Academy by hooking away the bracer that links Hu Liena and Xie Yue’s fusion skill. After the match, he prepares a line formation to delay Spirit Hall’s pursuit of Xiao Wu until Tang Hao arrives 11 13 14.

During the team’s five-year separation, Lin Yuan sets out to fish rare Soul Beasts across the continent. He and Xiao Ruoxue uncover and destroy Spirit Hall Soul-Nurturing Arrays, freeing a Black-Scaled Flood Dragon Snake at Soto Lake. Spirit Hall subsequently pursues him 15 16 17 18.

Lin Yuan enters Slaughter City, wins one hundred consecutive arena matches and crosses Hell Road with Hu Liena. He then reaches Sea God Island, where his assessment becomes the Sea God Nine Trials—Fishing Assessment. After completing three trials, he helps defend the island from Spirit Hall warships by disabling ships and calling on Sea Soul Beasts 19 20 21 22.

Appearance

At his awakening, Lin Yuan is a six-year-old child with bright eyes. After a year of tidal training on Sea God Island, his skin is wheat-brown and his arms and back bear scars from the reefs 1 21.

• His awakened rod is a slender, jade-sheened green bamboo pole about three feet long, with a transparent line and silver hook 1.

Personality

Lin Yuan treats fishing as a craft requiring observation, timing and patience. He is protective of his fishing spots but willing to share catches and teach others. In confrontations, he favors misdirection and an opponent’s momentum over a direct contest of strength 2 4 5 9.

He usually releases the Soul Beasts he catches, viewing survival in exchange for a reward as a fair bargain. That approach earns the cooperation of creatures he could not defeat by force. His curiosity can also put him at risk: he keeps fishing after warnings about the unknown being beneath Fallen Star Lake and later enters Slaughter City despite his companions’ objections 3 7 16 19 20.

The rod can catch Soul Beasts and interact with forms of Soul Power that Lin Yuan recognizes as “fishable.” Catches, releases and catalog entries provide Soul Power, skills or progress toward Soul Rings 1 3 4 13 21.
