Wang Dong realized Lin Fan had played her for a fool. Furious, she raised her foot and kicked at his thigh.
The kick came fast, shooting straight toward the inside of Lin Fan's thigh.
Lin Fan reacted at once. His eyes locked onto her leg, and he caught her calf with both hands and lifted it, nearly throwing her off balance on her one remaining foot.
"You want to hit me? Not a chance."
Lin Fan gave Wang Dong's calf a squeeze and said,
Wang Dong's legs really were long—as long as Xiao Wu's—and quite soft, too.
"You were messing with me all along."
Wang Dong said angrily,
Lin Fan was grabbing her leg! How infuriating.
"I wasn't messing with you. You failed to grab it yourself, so how can you blame me?"
Lin Fan smiled innocently and said,
"All you know how to do is bully people."
Wang Dong snorted and said,
Wang Dong twisted around, trying to pull her leg free from Lin Fan's grip,
but Lin Fan caught her and yanked her toward him, startling her so badly that she lost her balance and fell in front of him.
Just as she was about to hit the floor, she stubbornly reached out and grabbed Lin Fan's collar, determined that if she fell, he would fall with her.
At that moment, Wang Dong understood what the old man outside the Dormitory Building had told her: she needed a fearless heart.
Lin Fan had no time to react. Wang Dong's grip on his collar dragged him off balance, and he fell hard with her.
Fortunately, Lin Fan reacted quickly and braced himself against the floor with both hands.
Their faces came within a hair's breadth of touching, no more than a sheet of paper apart. They could feel each other's breath and clearly hear each other panting.
"You can pull a move like that? I underestimated you, Wang Dong."
Lin Fan sounded impressed. He looked down at Wang Dong beneath him and said with a grin,
"But like this, you can't hit me anymore, can you? Still dare to try?"
"No, all right?"
Wang Dong tried to struggle, but Lin Fan had her pinned firmly down. She turned her head away and gave up.
How was Lin Fan so strong? She couldn't get out from under him at all.
Then she spotted Lin Fan's homework just a few centimeters away.
She shot out a hand and snatched it from him in a flash. Delighted, she said,
"I got it! I got it! I got it! You have to let me copy it now. That's what you said, Lin Fan, so don't go back on your word."
Lin Fan jolted. Only then did he remember the homework in his hand. He had completely forgotten about it just now.
"Oh no, I forgot."
Wang Dong said happily,
"So I can copy your homework now, right?"
Lin Fan got up and dusted off his hands. Looking at the homework Wang Dong had taken, he said,
"Fine, you can copy it. You got hold of it, just like we agreed."
Wang Dong slowly stood up and said,
"Mm-hmm!"
Soon, Wang Dong was copying Lin Fan's homework while he waited beside her, continuing to listen to the lesson and write down what had been covered that day.
Quietly, Mu Jin stopped in the middle of the doorway and peered inside. Seeing the two of them writing so diligently, he was delighted and thought,
Strange. I heard them making a racket earlier. Why has it gone quiet? Lin Fan and Wang Dong are working hard, though. I hope they're this serious next time, too.
Then he wouldn't have to go to so much trouble.
A long while passed.
The day's lessons soon ended, and the students headed back to the Dormitory Building one after another.
Mu Jin checked what the two had written as punishment that day to see whether it matched the material he had taught.
He read through both assignments carefully and found little difference between them. Both had written down what he had covered that day.
"You both did very well. Lin Fan, yours is especially good. You wrote down exactly what I taught today."
Holding their assignments, Mu Jin smiled slightly at Lin Fan and praised him.
"Thank you for the praise, sir."
Lin Fan smiled in reply,
"Teacher, what about me? What about me?"
Wang Dong asked eagerly,
"You did well too, Wang Dong. Here, you can have these back."
Mu Jin returned their assignments, then grew serious and said,
"Next time, don't be so late. And don't talk during class. If I catch you doing it again, you'll be punished again."
Wang Dong grinned and said,
"We promise we won't, sir."
Lin Fan said with a smile,
"That's right, sir."
Mu Jin nodded to them and said,
"Good. I'm heading back. You two should return to the dorm soon as well."
Mu Jin strode out of the classroom and disappeared from Lin Fan and Wang Dong's sight.
"Yes, Teacher Mu Jin."
Lin Fan and Wang Dong called after him.
"Let's go back too, Lin Fan."
Wang Dong turned to look at Lin Fan and said,
"You go on ahead, Wang Dong. It's my turn to clean the classroom today. I'll be back soon."
Lin Fan looked at her and replied,
"Okay."
Wang Dong quickly left the classroom.
Once she was gone, Lin Fan picked up a broom and began cleaning.
Most of the litter was dust, scraps of paper, drink bottles, and snack wrappers. Some lay along the walls, while other bits had ended up under desks and stools.
Fortunately, there wasn't much of it. After working for a while, Lin Fan finally got the classroom clean.
He bent down to put the broom back, then straightened and looked around. Litter had been scattered everywhere before.
Now the room was spotless. He felt much better.
Just as he was about to head back to the dorm, he noticed that Xiao Xiao hadn't left either. She was still in the classroom, lying face-down on her desk.
Everyone else had gone. Why was Xiao Xiao still here? He should remind her to head back first.
Lin Fan walked over to Xiao Xiao.
"Xiao Xiao, why haven't you gone back? It's my turn to clean today. I thought you'd left ages ago."
Lin Fan bent down, looked at Xiao Xiao's delicate face as she sat lost in thought, and waved a hand before her eyes. He spoke gently.
"Oh, you're on cleaning duty today, Lin Fan!"
Xiao Xiao's eyes sharpened as she realized it was his turn to clean. She spoke softly, sounding a little surprised.
"You haven't gone back yet, Lin Fan? I'll close the classroom door in a little while."
Lin Fan looked at the dispirited Xiao Xiao and said,
"Is something wrong, Xiao Xiao? You look so down."
"What could be wrong with me? Go on back, Lin Fan. I'll shut the classroom door later."
Xiao Xiao lifted her head, shook it, and said,
She turned, meaning to shift to another seat, but the moment she put her weight on her foot, her face tightened.
"My foot! It hurts, it hurts..."
Lin Fan froze. Gripping the desk in alarm, he said,
"What happened, Xiao Xiao? It looks serious, but you said nothing was wrong. You're obviously lying to me. Tell me what's going on. I won't tell anyone."
Realizing she couldn't fool Lin Fan, Xiao Xiao slumped in her chair as though giving up and said,
"Fine. My foot just hurts, that's all. It's nothing serious. It'll get better in a few days."
Lin Fan looked skeptical and gave a small laugh.
"I don't believe you. You cried out so loudly just now. Do you think you can fool someone from a medical family? Take off your boot and let me have a look."
Xiao Xiao sighed and said,
"I'm really fine, Lin Fan."
Tired of standing, Lin Fan crouched down and said,
"Let me see. Maybe I can help! I come from a medical family. I wouldn't say I'm an expert, but I know almost everything about medicine."
Xiao Xiao pressed her lips together, a hint of irritation in her voice.
"I'm not lying to you. I really am fine, Lin Fan."
Lin Fan asked,
"If you're fine, then take it off."
Xiao Xiao's gaze wavered. At last, she sighed and said,
"All right..."
She couldn't outstubborn Lin Fan. If this went on, he would keep pestering her and refuse to let it drop.
As soon as she finished speaking.
