System Check-In Reward, Striking Up a Conversation with Jiang Nannan (Please Bookmark and Request Updates)
He was neither angry nor bothered. Many new students were like that, after all; only a few were polite. He had long since grown used to it.
Meanwhile, Lin Fan followed the number 100 written on his key and soon found his dorm room.
The student dormitory was a long, narrow building, with closed doors lining both sides of the corridor and room numbers posted above them.
The building was clearly old. Who knew how many years it had been in use? At opposite ends of the corridor were communal bathrooms for men and women.
Lin Fan unlocked his door, and a wave of stale, murky air rushed out.
He hurriedly stepped aside. Looking into the room, he could make out nothing but dust.
He had no choice but to wait until most of the smell and dust had cleared.
Only then did Lin Fan dare go inside. He opened the window to let the choking air and dust escape.
He could not help grumbling. No one had lived here for months, at least. The dust was as thick as a finger.
Shrek Academy was one of the most famous academies around. Why had it not cleaned the dormitories before the new students arrived? How was anyone supposed to live here? Were the students expected to clean the rooms themselves?
Once the window was open, light streamed in, brightening the room. The dust and smell gradually faded.
After a while.
The air was flowing freely through the room, and much of the odor had dissipated.
Only then could Lin Fan see how the dorm was laid out.
The room was tiny, roughly ten square meters. Two beds took up most of the space, leaving room for a table and two metal wardrobes. Two lightbulbs hung on the wall, though they needed Soul Power to light up. He had no idea whether they still worked.
He examined the bulbs. Their metal fittings had rusted with age, and cobwebs clung to them. Why had Shrek Academy not replaced them?
The wooden boards on both beds were as thin as books. They sagged as soon as someone sat down.
The bathroom was even worse. When he opened its door, a stench hit him like the air in a garbage dump. He nearly threw up last night's dinner.
It had not been cleaned in at least half a year. Fortunately, the room had a mop, a rag, and a bucket.
His roommate had not arrived yet, so he had to clean the whole place alone.
An hour later.
Lin Fan finished cleaning the dorm. He had not missed a single corner, and the room was spotless.
The murky smell was gone, replaced by a fresh scent.
With the cleaning done, he lay panting on his bed to rest and made his daily system check-in.
"System, I want to check in."
[Ding-dong! System check-in in progress!] [Random reward draw in progress. Ding-dong! Congratulations, host! Check-in successful. Reward: charm and good looks increased by 99.] [This will increase the host's charm and good looks, leaving girls in awe.]
Lin Fan let out a cry of delight. His eyes lit up at the reward, and he was overjoyed.
A strange energy suddenly descended upon him, rapidly enhancing his looks and charm.
Nervous and excited, he pulled out a mirror, looked himself over, and stroked his chin. He gave himself an approving verdict:
"Not bad. I look like a handsome young scholar, elegant as a jade tree in the wind."
Despite the reward, he regretted not getting the Demon Motion King, Sea Shark King, Golden Dart King, or Fire Dragon King Mecha.
If he collected all four, he could combine them into the fourth-generation Demon Tyrant King Mecha.
Since none of them had appeared in the random reward draw, he would have to keep checking in until he got them.
Lin Fan suddenly yawned. Drowsiness swept over him, and after a long day, he fell fast asleep on the bed.
Time passed, and evening soon arrived.
When Lin Fan woke, the dorm and the world beyond his door were pitch-black. His stomach growled.
He rubbed his hungry belly, picked up his food bowl, and headed for the cafeteria.
The cafeteria stood behind the dormitory area. He could see it as soon as he stepped out of the building.
There seemed to be hardly anyone there, which surprised Lin Fan. But when he entered, he saw a dozen or so people lining up for food.
What stood out most was the complete lack of tables and chairs. The cafeteria was a vast empty space, with only sinks for washing hands and dishes along one side.
Food was sold at eight windows along the inner wall. Each displayed its prices clearly, and each served different dishes. The farther left the window, the more expensive the food.
He could not help grumbling. Not a single table or chair—were people supposed to eat standing up?
A sign by the entrance also said that food could not be taken out. Shrek Academy really was peculiar.
After a moment's surprise, Lin Fan ordered the most expensive lamb and egg fried rice to give it a try.
He bought a serving from the priciest window on the left.
The lamb and egg fried rice did not smell particularly appetizing, yet it cost a fortune. Paying for it in Gold Soul Coins was a complete waste, and it did not even taste as good as food outside.
Lin Fan quickly finished it, but he was still hungry, so he went out in search of more food.
He reached Shrek Academy's east gate. Just outside, vendors crowded both sides of the main road.
They sold all sorts of things, but food was by far the most common. It was already evening, and most of the vendors had set out stalls selling dishes whose aromas filled the air.
Lin Fan walked straight to the roadside. Tempting scents drifted toward him from both sides, and for a moment, he could not decide what to eat.
On his way, he spotted a girl staring intently at a vendor's food. She was tall and well-proportioned, with long, snow-white legs.
Her golden hair fell in great waves down her back. Her face was like jade, her skin pale as snow, and her eyes clear as pools of water.
She had an air of refined nobility as well as a soft, alluring beauty. She stood out from the crowd.
Lin Fan quickly recognized Jiang Nannan. He stepped forward and asked:
"Hello, I'm Lin Fan. I'm a new student. Do you know which vendor has the best food? I can pay you for your help."
Jiang Nannan blushed. She turned, saw a handsome young man with delicate features, and replied:
"Hello, I'm Jiang Nannan. I know a place with good food. I'll take you there!"
Lin Fan nodded. "All right."
Then.
Jiang Nannan led Lin Fan to a stall halfway down the road. It sold homestyle stir-fried dishes.
Jiang Nannan turned to Lin Fan and explained:
"This is one stall I think tastes really good. You should give it a try, junior."
Lin Fan took out a bag of Gold Soul Coins and held it out to her.
"Senior, there are one hundred Gold Soul Coins in this bag."
"One hundred Gold Soul Coins!"
Jiang Nannan cried out.
"What's wrong? Is it too little?"
Lin Fan looked at her in confusion.
Still startled, Jiang Nannan waved her hands and explained:
"No, no, it's not too little, junior! But I can't take your money. I only wanted to show you the way."
She had only meant to take him there. She had never expected him to actually offer her money, much less a hundred Gold Soul Coins.
