"How about this? Would you be my cultivation instructor for six months?"
Lin Fan understood that she felt awkward about accepting the money. He offered her the bag of Gold Soul Coins again and made his proposal.
"Uh..."
Jiang Nannan froze. Looking at the bag of Gold Soul Coins Lin Fan held out again, she pursed her lips and thought to herself.
He was handsome and refined, and he didn't look like a liar. Besides, she couldn't see any reason for him to deceive her. She came from an ordinary family and had nothing worth taking.
If this new student wanted her to guide his cultivation for half a year, then she would do it. He didn't seem to be lying.
Jiang Nannan took the bag of Gold Soul Coins, cleared her throat twice, and said brightly:
"All right! I suppose I can accept and be your cultivation instructor."
"Great. If I run into any problems with my cultivation over the next six months, sorry for the trouble," Lin Fan said with a light laugh.
Holding the heavy bag of Gold Soul Coins in one hand, Jiang Nannan smiled softly.
"It's nothing. Since I'm going to be your teacher, of course I'll guide you."
She thought about sending the money to her mother. It would make her mother's life a little easier.
Lin Fan turned and saw that the snack stall had only two or three customers.
"Senior Jiang Nannan, is the food here really that good? Why are there so few customers?"
Jiang Nannan laughed at his question.
"Junior Lin Fan! The academy students haven't come out yet, of course it's quiet. If we came later, we'd have to line up! And the owner makes delicious stir-fries. Come on, I'll take you."
With that, she caught Lin Fan by the arm and led him briskly toward the stall.
"Okay, Senior Jiang Nannan."
Lin Fan had barely begun speaking before Jiang Nannan pulled him along.
He didn't try to free his arm. He let her lead him.
Jiang Nannan brought Lin Fan to a table the vendor had set out. The owner was still chopping vegetables, preparing for the late-night rush.
"Ma'am, we'll have braised fish, braised chicken, spicy tofu, and two big bowls of white rice."
Jiang Nannan called out her order to the owner.
"Coming right up! Please have a seat, you two. I'll cook it now. It won't be long."
Hearing her, the owner looked up and greeted the two customers cheerfully.
"Thanks!" Jiang Nannan replied. She turned to Lin Fan. "She's cooking for us now. We just have to wait."
She picked up a pair of wooden chopsticks and waited for the food, looking as though she couldn't wait to eat.
"Sure!"
Lin Fan watched the owner cook and couldn't help wondering, Can it really be that good?
Before long, the owner finished cooking and brought over plate after steaming plate, setting them on the table.
The moment the dishes arrived, a rich aroma rose from them, especially from the braised fish, braised chicken, and spicy tofu.
The dishes weren't very expensive, either. Both of them, and the academy's other students, could afford them.
They tucked in eagerly.
Jiang Nannan ate a piece of chicken, chewed, and swallowed it. Her face lit up as she turned to Lin Fan.
"Good, isn't it, Junior Lin Fan? Her stir-fries and everything else are delicious. The owner told me the recipes have been passed down through her family."
Lin Fan picked up a piece of fish and smiled at Jiang Nannan.
"So they're family recipes! No wonder her cooking tastes so good."
It was far better than the cafeteria food. These three dishes took effort to prepare, and that alone put them well ahead of anything the cafeteria served.
"Mm."
Jiang Nannan nodded and said:
Just then, Lin Fan noticed how Jiang Nannan looked as she ate and asked:
"Huh? Senior, you don't look too well. Have you been anemic lately, with poor digestion and an irregular sleep schedule?"
Jiang Nannan looked up at him in surprise, bewildered.
"Lin Fan, how did you know? I haven't told anyone. Junior Lin Fan, were you a doctor?"
Lin Fan answered:
"Of course not. I've only learned a little bit of traditional medicine."
"That's incredible! You only know a little, and you could still tell something was wrong with me."
Jiang Nannan's eyes shone. She swallowed, then asked anxiously:
"I really have been anemic, and my digestion and sleep have been all over the place. Lin Fan, what should I do?"
"Don't worry, Senior Jiang Nannan," Lin Fan said with a smile. "Eat more meat, vegetables, and fruit, and make sure you get enough sleep. That should take care of it."
He had studied traditional medicine since childhood, so he knew a little about it. He also knew that Jiang Nannan scrimped and saved to pay for her mother's treatment. Usually, she wouldn't even dare buy more expensive food.
"Good. I thought it was something serious! You scared me to death. I'll just eat more from now on!"
Jiang Nannan patted her chest and sighed in relief.
"Senior Jiang Nannan, it may seem like a small thing, but it could have serious consequences."
Lin Fan lowered his voice, deliberately trying to scare her.
Jiang Nannan, who had just bent over her food again, looked up curiously. "What consequences?"
Lin Fan beckoned her closer with a mischievous grin. "Come here and I'll tell you."
"Okay," Jiang Nannan said without hesitation.
She stood, walked straight over to Lin Fan, and bent down beside him, tucking her hair behind her ear as she leaned close.
Once she was near enough, Lin Fan whispered:
"You'll get dark circles under your eyes, and your face will turn yellow! Then you'll look like an old, sallow-faced lady, hahaha."
Jiang Nannan blushed to the tips of her ears and smacked his shoulder, pouting.
"Hey, you're the one who'll turn into a sallow-faced old lady! You're so naughty, Junior. You made it sound terrifying."
"I'm warning you, Senior Jiang Nannan. Besides, everything I said is true."
Grinning, Lin Fan turned aside to dodge her slap and gave her a good-natured smile.
"I know, I know. I'll eat."
A faint blush lingered on Jiang Nannan's face. She felt happy inside, though her words came out impatiently.
Knowing someone cared about her, she couldn't help eating a little faster. At Shrek Academy, no one usually cared about her at all. But now, Lin Fan did.
That night, beneath the moonlight, the two ate beside the road and teased each other like a couple.
Passersby felt a flicker of envy and longing and gave the young pair a second glance.
"You dare hit on my Jiang Nannan? You're asking for death!"
A deep, resonant voice suddenly rang out, thick with anger.
Lin Fan turned toward it and saw a tall, imposing young man dressed in black.
The young man's face was twisted with fury. Lin Fan immediately recognized him as Xu Sanshi, Jiang Nannan's hopeless admirer.
"Xu Sanshi, why did you follow me again?"
At the sound of that all-too-familiar voice she hated, Jiang Nannan turned, saw Xu Sanshi, and snapped at him.
