The Soul Beasts cried out in misery.
For Soul Masters, these rewards might have been blessings. For Soul Beasts, they might mean death.
Worst of all, the Sky Screen was broadcasting their misery live.
The Star Dou Forest.
Di Tian felt a chill, as though the lips were gone and the teeth were exposed.
He had never expected the increase to be in cultivation age.
For Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Beasts and those below them, that was a good thing.
For them, it was anything but. They already had no hope of surviving their next heavenly tribulation. One wave of rewards would send them all into tribulation at once. How were they supposed to survive that?
Di Tian was about to shout that the Sky Screen was unfair when its image changed.
It became the sight he could never forget.
Back then, the Divine Realm had still been called the Divine Dragon Realm, and its supreme ruler had been the Dragon God.
But every living being on the Douluo Continent was baffled. What did that have to do with Soul Beasts getting struck by lightning en masse?
To ordinary Soul Masters, even a Titled Douluo was beyond reach.
Gods were more like legends, let alone the Dragon God, who stood above them all.
For Di Tian and the other Soul Beasts, though, it meant something else entirely.
The Sky Screen was not only taking them back to the height of the Soul Beasts' power. It also seemed to be explaining why they had to face a heavenly tribulation every hundred thousand years.
"Wasn't the heavenly tribulation the work of those ungrateful wretches on the God Realm Committee? They started the war! Then they imposed the rule that Soul Beasts couldn't become gods."
Di Tian muttered indignantly. Back then, when the Divine Realm had still been the Divine Dragon Realm, the dragons' combined strength had utterly crushed the human gods. It had to have been those despicable humans.
Gu Yuena motioned for Di Tian to be quiet. She, too, looked up at the Sky Screen, puzzled.
She had no memory of this part. Could that memory have gone to the Golden Dragon King instead?
The image shifted abruptly, and text appeared.
The Dragon God had attempted to elevate the Dragon God Realm into a God Star.
But in the process, the will of destruction in the cosmos had corrupted him and driven him mad. He had begun slaughtering indiscriminately throughout the Divine Realm, igniting the Dragon God War.
The war had devastated the beast gods, especially the dragons, who had been nearly wiped out.
Di Tian shot to his feet and stared at Gu Yuena in disbelief.
He could not understand how the dragons' near extinction could have been caused by the Dragon God losing control.
The other Ferocious Beasts felt little about it. Unlike Di Tian, they were natives born and raised on Douluo Star.
Once the Dragon God had regained his senses, he had asked the first Asura God to split him in two, creating the Golden and Silver Dragon Kings.
Before that, he had used his supreme authority to establish one rule:
"Until a new Dragon God appears, no Soul Beast may become a god..."
The Golden Dragon King had been sealed in the Divine Realm, while the Silver Dragon King had fled to Douluo Star.
After reading the decree, every living being on Douluo Star fell silent.
It had been bad enough that the Angel God had sabotaged her own descendants.
The Dragon God had gone further. He had set out to ruin his own kind completely.
Until a new Dragon God appeared, no Soul Beast could become a god.
Not only that, but they had to endure a lightning strike every hundred thousand years.
So after all the time those Ferocious Beasts had spent hating the Divine Realm, they were being told the culprit was their own leader?
Xiong Jun stared at the Sky Screen, unable to shake an uneasy feeling.
Was a leader like that worth serving? Until a new Dragon God appeared, no Soul Beast could become a god...
In other words, Soul Beasts could have only one leader, and that leader had to be a dragon. Until the dragons produced a new Dragon God, no Soul Beast could ascend.
And every hundred thousand years, they still had to take a lightning strike.
At that moment, the Silver Dragon King felt isolated. Apart from Di Tian, the Soul Beasts all seemed to be losing faith in her.
Di Tian raised a trembling hand and asked:
"Supreme Lord, say something!"
What could Gu Yuena say? What could she do?
"There's nothing about this curse in the memories I inherited."
Gu Yuena could only give a bitter smile as she spoke.
The moment she said it, she could clearly feel the Soul Beasts' faith in her slipping away.
But she could do nothing about it. All she could offer was reassurance:
"If the Star Dou Forest takes first place, perhaps my reward will let me inherit the Dragon God's position directly. Then you'll never have to suffer another heavenly tribulation."
That made the Ferocious Beasts feel a little better.
As for the others, Gu Yuena could not be bothered. The Sea Soul Beasts worshipped the Sea God, while those in the Far North worshipped the Ice God.
The Soul Beasts on the other continent were outsiders anyway.
For now, Gu Yuena could only pray that the first-place reward would make her the Dragon God. Failing that, healing her injuries would do.
With enough strength, she could always keep her subordinates in line.
The humans, meanwhile, were more preoccupied with the Snow Empress's staggering seven hundred and ninety thousand years of cultivation.
"Seven hundred and ninety thousand years! Could anyone really stand against her?"
"Did the person above forget Senior Qian Daoliu? And Senior Tang Chen, who's just recovered his full strength?"
Put that way, judging by the strength revealed so far, the humans still held the upper hand.
"Doesn't anyone else think the Heavenly Snow Woman is beautiful?"
At Wanmin Restaurant, a diner said it with drool running down his chin.
Ordinary people did not care how strong the Heavenly Snow Woman was.
They cared more about the latest gossip and what they would eat tomorrow.
The leaders of the major factions, however, could not afford to ignore her.
After all, they still had to hunt Soul Beasts. What if they ran into her one day?
The more they knew about the Soul Beasts, the less likely they were to die without knowing what had hit them.
And what should they do if they met the Snow Empress?
Lie down, find a comfortable position, and let her freeze them into ice sculptures.
Even Bibi Dong would have to lie down before someone like her.
The heart of the Far North was where the Ice God had fallen.
It naturally suppressed anyone who entered.
Even Qian Daoliu would be more likely to die there than survive.
Only Su Yun, Zhongli, and the others carried on as though nothing had happened, eating and drinking as usual.
Su Yun picked up a Teyvat fried egg from the plate with his chopsticks and held it out to Columbina.
"Nom!"
Columbina took one bite, catching the chopsticks along with the egg.
Sandrone glanced over, a little tempted, but still said haughtily:
"Hmph, Columbina. You actually need someone to feed you?"
To Columbina, that sounded like Sandrone wanted to be fed too.
Columbina picked up another fried egg and waved it in front of Sandrone.
Sandrone's eyes followed the egg, but she maintained her haughty tone:
"...Columbina. My bionic joints have full independent motor function. I'm neither one of your stray animals nor a malfunctioning machine that needs feeding."
A brief silence followed.
The girl kept smiling with her head tilted, the spoon hanging perfectly still in midair.
Sandrone took a deep breath, her fingertips turning white as she clenched them. "...Hmph. If you insist on wasting time on this, then hurry up. The sauce is about to drip onto the table."
With stiff, obvious reluctance, she leaned forward slightly, snatched the bite in her mouth, then whipped around and turned her back.
The faintest blush touched her ears. It was probably just the heat from the workshop.
Su Yun lifted his tea and took a sip.
Watching Columbina and Sandrone bicker really was the most entertaining part.
Those two were just too easy to ship.
