Background / History
Dugu Bo’s Submission
Dugu Yan first appears accompanying her grandfather, Dugu Bo, in Sunset Forest during a trip to obtain her first soul ring. Leng Yaozhu intercepts them and demands his valuables. When her overwhelming strength forces Dugu Bo to submit, protecting Yan becomes his chief concern: he fears that his enemies would kill her if she were left alone 7 8 9.
Dugu Bo introduces Yan to Leng Yaozhu, hoping to secure protection and possibly a childhood match with Lu Xuan. Lu Xuan agrees to have her accompany him because he needs a sparring partner closer to his own strength. Yan remains bewildered by arrangements made without an explanation 8.
Sparring and Childhood Betrothal
Yan initially regards Leng Yaozhu and Lu Xuan as intruders who bullied her grandfather and took over his sanctuary. She agrees to spar with Lu Xuan to restore Dugu Bo’s dignity, only to discover that the younger boy is already level 30 and possesses two purple soul rings 12.
Her poison attack is burned away by his golden flames. Lu Xuan extinguishes the flames scorching her arms and reduces the force of his punch, but still knocks her down. The blow lands on her chest, leaving her humiliated; she rejects his offered hand and vows to grow stronger than him 12 13.
Leng Yaozhu apologizes on Lu Xuan’s behalf and offers Yan three requests. Yan demands that he become her man, obey her in everything, and never refuse her. Leng treats this as a childhood engagement, to be formalized when they are older. Yan sees the arrangement as a shortcut to revenge, while Dugu Bo welcomes it as protection for her future 13.
Escaping the Family’s Poisonous Fate
The Jade Phosphorous Serpent lineage suffers increasingly severe self-poisoning as its members’ cultivation rises. After recognizing Dugu Bo’s symptoms, Lu Xuan proposes either containing the toxins in a soul bone or using an immortal herb to remove the danger at its root. He is willing to share the herb because he now considers the grandfather and granddaughter family 24.
Dugu Bo chooses soul-bone containment for himself and reserves the herb for Yan. Her youth and single soul ring leave her cultivation path easier to reshape than his. Following Lu Xuan’s instructions, she eats the Earth Dragon Golden Melon and cultivates through the night 25.
The herb transforms her serpent into a Golden-Scaled Earthshaker Flood Dragon. Its poison attribute disappears, ultimate earth takes its place, and her soul power reaches level 19. Dugu Bo weeps with relief upon seeing her escape the family’s inherited suffering 25 26.
Cultivation and Relocation
Yan remains at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well to pursue rank 20 before hunting her second soul ring. When she returns at rank 22, she is eager to show Lu Xuan her progress, but finds Dugu Manor emptied 26 34.
Dugu Bo explains that they are leaving Heaven Dou City and that he has withdrawn her academy enrollment. He takes her to the Grand Feather Mountain Range, where she witnesses the Dao-Seeking Sect’s headquarters under construction 34.
Appearance
- Hair: Short and pale purple 8.
- General appearance: Described as a cute little girl. Leng Yaozhu praises her bone structure and predicts that she will become beautiful as she grows older 8 14.
- During martial soul evolution: Dark-golden light envelops her body, and golden beams shine from her eyes when the transformation completes 25.
Personality
Yan is proud, fiercely loyal to her grandfather, and initially convinced that the Poison Douluo is invincible. His submission wounds her pride, prompting her to challenge Lu Xuan despite the obvious disparity in their strength. Although briefly distracted by Lu Xuan’s looks, she pushes herself to fight rather than retreat 12.
Her response to defeat is childish and stubborn: she imagines becoming stronger, taking Lu Xuan home, and making him serve her. That competitive impulse also drives genuine effort. She eagerly accepts the chance to strengthen herself with an immortal herb and later remains in seclusion to advance her cultivation 13 25 26.
Her affection for Dugu Bo is direct and attentive. She rushes to greet him during their visit to the well and immediately notices his sickly appearance, attempting to support him despite his efforts to conceal the cause 25.
Abilities & Skills
Jade Phosphorous Serpent
- Originally a control-system martial soul 12.
- Its poison mist can corrode rock 12.
- Carries inherited poison backlash that worsens with cultivation, threatening the user’s health and lifespan 24.
- Evolves into a non-poisonous flood dragon after Yan absorbs the Earth Dragon Golden Melon 25.
First Soul Skill: Jade Phosphorous Red Poison
- Granted by her sole yellow, hundred-year soul ring at level 12 12.
- Releases dense poison mist from her mouth, forming a poisonous net over the target 12.
- Lu Xuan’s golden flames completely burn away the attack without requiring a soul skill, exposing a decisive weakness in that matchup 12.
Golden-Scaled Earthshaker Flood Dragon
- An evolved martial soul possessing ultimate earth, replacing the serpent’s poison attribute 25.
- Its manifestation has dark-golden scales, four powerful claws, and two raised bulges on its head suggesting developing dragon features 25.
- Its evolution frees Yan from her former martial soul’s poisonous legacy. No post-evolution soul skills are documented in the provided chapters 25 26 34.
Items & Cultivation Resources
- Earth Dragon Golden Melon — The immortal herb responsible for her martial soul evolution and rise to level 19. Lu Xuan instructs her to remove the rind and consume the flesh without wasting its juice 25.
- Whale rubber — Leng Yaozhu gives the remaining supply to Dugu Bo for Yan, explaining that it strengthens the body and can help her withstand older soul rings. Her consumption is not shown 10.
- Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well — Serves as her secluded cultivation site after her evolution 26.
Relationships
- Dugu Bo — Grandfather and protector. He submits to Leng Yaozhu partly to secure Yan’s safety, supports her betrothal, and prioritizes her chance to escape poison backlash over taking the immortal herb himself 8 13 25.
- Lu Xuan — Sparring opponent and childhood betrothed under Leng Yaozhu’s arrangement. Their first fight inspires her determination to surpass him; he later shares the resource that transforms her martial soul 12 13 24 25.
- Leng Yaozhu — Initially resented as the woman who humiliated her grandfather. She later mediates Yan’s dispute with Lu Xuan and helps arrange her cure; Yan affectionately calls her “Sister Leng” 12 13 25 34.
