Background / History

Early Career and Martial Soul Awakenings

Su Yuntao’s early cultivation was limited by poverty: when he first reached rank ten, he could not hire a soul-hunting team and had to obtain his ring alone. By his introduction, he has years of experience conducting Martial Soul awakenings and expects a promotion from Deacon Wang after completing his current village assignments 1 9.

He conducts Duan Qingya’s awakening, initially judging the boy’s nonvenomous green snake to be among the weakest beast Martial Souls for offense and control. Discovering level-six innate soul power changes his attitude immediately. He invites Duan into Spirit Hall, accepts the boy’s request to consult Grandpa Niu, and issues the certificate needed for schooling and Spirit Hall business 1 2. He also issues Tang San’s certificate, which later becomes the subject of a dispute at Nuoding Academy’s gate 4.

Duan Qingya’s First Soul-Ring Hunt

Two years later, Spirit Hall assigns Su to Duan’s first soul-ring commission. Su accepts the work to help pay for a necklace worth 1,000 Gold Soul Coins for Sisi’s birthday. Their intended target is a 320-year-old Mandala Snake, but they instead encounter a wounded Azure-Scaled Snake King over 400 years old 8.

Su initially refuses the more dangerous hunt, warning that he could escape an emergency but Duan might not. The valuable gallbladder, Duan’s dissection tools, and repeated flattery persuade him to proceed. His first attack barely damages the snake; following Duan’s instructions, he tears open an existing tail wound and fights until the beast is nearly dead. Duan delivers the killing blows 8 9.

After the hunt, Su takes the gallbladder while Duan collects other useful materials. He later sells it, buys Sisi’s necklace, and gives Duan half the remaining proceeds—more than a hundred Gold Soul Coins—as financial support 10 11.

Martial Soul Evolution

Duan gives Su more than ten bottles of blue-green liquid, presenting them as an energizing potion to repay his help. In reality, Su is the unwitting test subject for Duan’s attempt to evolve another person’s beast Martial Soul. Additional ingredients spread the effects across a month, allowing Duan to monitor him discreetly during visits to Spirit Hall 12.

The potion accelerates Su’s cultivation and gathers wind energy around him before his Lone Wolf evolves into a Gale Demon Wolf. His advancement exceeds Duan’s expectations, prompting concern that powerful observers might investigate. Su’s safe return from his subsequent soul-ring hunt reassures Duan that the feared trouble has not materialized 12 14.

Potion Business and Later Life

As a newly appointed deacon, Su proposes distributing Duan’s publicly sold Stimulant Potion through Spirit Hall shops in nearby cities. He offers to arrange inexpensive transport and place the products on shelves under his own name. Their agreement allocates 50% of profits to Su, 30% to Duan, and 20% to others involved 14.

Four years later, Su has a secure position in Nuoding City’s Spirit Hall, a harmonious family life, and a child. Recognizing that the local potion market is saturated, he plans to transfer his profit share and return his attention to deacon duties. His savings and several rental shops are sufficient to support his family. Before Duan leaves for Heaven Dou City, Su promises to personally oversee medicinal-herb purchases from Grandpa Niu’s village 15.

Appearance

  • Lone Wolf possession: Gray fur covers his body, his muscles swell markedly, and his green eyes scan the children as though surveying prey. Most children are frightened by the transformation 1.
  • Original soul rings: One white and one yellow ring appear beneath his feet when he summons his Martial Soul 1.
  • During the evolution process: Duan observes no outward change in Su’s ordinary appearance, despite sensing dense wind energy around him 12.
  • After promotion: Wears a Spirit Hall deacon’s uniform 14.

Personality

Su is ambitious, money-conscious, and susceptible to praise. Recruitment bonuses and promotions matter to him partly because he hopes greater wealth and standing will impress Sisi. During the Snake King hunt, he disguises his interest in the gallbladder as sympathy for a young Soul Master facing the hardships he once experienced himself 1 2 8 9.

His self-interest does not prevent generosity or lasting loyalty. He shares an unexpected profit with Duan without being asked, becomes proud of the boy as though he were a younger brother, and repeatedly renews his offer to help with a second soul ring. In later years, he also demonstrates practical financial judgment by preparing to leave the potion business before its market declines 10 11 14 15.

Abilities & Skills

Lone Wolf / Gale Demon Wolf

Su’s original beast Martial Soul possesses his body, producing a visibly stronger, wolf-like form. Duan’s evolution potion later transforms it into a Gale Demon Wolf 1 12.

  • Supports close-range combat through bodily transformation and wolf-claw attacks 1 9.
  • Accumulates wind energy during the potion-induced evolution 12.
  • No post-evolution combat demonstration or third soul-skill name is provided 14.

First Soul Skill: Thrust

Provides a brief burst of momentum 9.

  • Used to evade the Azure-Scaled Snake King’s mouth during its counterattack 9.

Second Soul Skill: Lone Wolf Gale Claws

Creates sharp wolf claws on Su’s hands for close-range attacks 9.

  • Tears open and enlarges the Snake King’s existing tail wound 9.
  • His attacks are initially insufficient to seriously injure the beast’s protected eyes; exploiting its wound is decisive 9.
  • Sustained fighting leaves his soul power nearly exhausted 9.

Martial Soul Awakening and Assessment

Su channels soul power into a six-stone Awakening Formation and tests innate soul power with a blue crystal ball 1 2.

  • Guides children through sensing and summoning their Martial Souls 1.
  • Records awakening results and signs Martial Soul certificates 2.
  • His initial assessment of Azure Chi focuses on its weak-looking, nonvenomous snake form rather than the potential Duan recognizes 2.

Soul Hunting and Distribution

  • Uses Spirit Hall’s soul-beast distribution map and commission paperwork to select a suitable hunting target 8.
  • As a deacon, can arrange transport and access Spirit Hall-affiliated shops across nearby cities 14.

Equipment / Items

  • Awakening kit — Six jet-black formation stones, a blue soul-power testing crystal, and certificate materials 1 2.
  • Soul-hunting supplies — Medicine, a day’s food, commission paperwork, and a Spirit Hall soul-beast distribution map 8.
  • Evolution potion — Duan’s blue-green preparation, received under the guise of an energizing drink and taken daily 12.

  • Sisi — Initially the woman he hopes to impress through earnings and promotion. After he becomes a deacon, she tells him she has liked him for a long time; they later marry and have a child 2 14 15.
  • Grandpa Niu / Village Chief Niu — A familiar village chief whose annual encouragement speeches Su finds excessive. Later, Su agrees to protect the village’s medicinal-herb purchasing arrangement 1 15.
  • Deacon Wang — Superior who rewards his recruitment of Niu Erdan and promises him advancement after his awakening assignments 1 2.
