Background / History

Xi is the youngest of the twelve Sui siblings. The siblings are fragments of a single original being and become Sui when reunited. Unlike her more worldly siblings, Xi spent centuries secluded at home, devoting herself to painting and rarely leaving her residence. 172 186 200

At some point, the Year Beast swallowed Xi. Her consciousness survived but was confined within a small cabin, unable to know what was happening outside or whether her siblings’ rescue attempts had succeeded. Chen Ran later found her restrained by silk in a courtyard house and learned of her captivity. Xi understood that any sibling attempting a rescue risked being devoured as well, restoring more of the Year Beast’s Authority. 155 156

Chen Ran eventually extracted Xi from the World within a Painting. To observers in that worldline, Xi appeared to be replaced by an unintelligent Ayao, prompting rumors of resurrection or rebirth. Chen Ran then began constructing a Dragon Bubble as a possible resurrection body for her. Xi initially rejected both a new body and the black crown, fearing what further growth or evolution could entail; she later accepted a crowned Xi Bubble body. 160 163 170 171

As Xi’s new body developed, she regained a human form and eventually grew to life size. Her transformation gave her a vastly different perspective on Terra: while examining Chen Ran’s planetary model, she casually killed a Demon in the far north with a slap, creating massive geographical damage and flooding elsewhere on the planet. Chen Ran subsequently rewound the model’s time, undoing the disaster and its memories. 174 176 180

Chen Ran later equips Xi for travel to another worldline, gives her the Year Beast as protection, and designates her a Divine Messenger. In the normal worldline, Xi’s Year Beast aura and borrowed powers lead Nian and the other Sui siblings to mistake her for Sui itself. Xi briefly exploits the misunderstanding to make Nian serve her, but ultimately seeks Chen Ran’s aid to revive their fallen sister, Xie. 195 197 199

To revive Xie, Xi is tasked with capturing the Year Beast of the normal worldline. A giant Xi Bubble is deployed at the Sui Mausoleum, but the awakened Year Beast overwhelms it. Xi intervenes directly, attempts to communicate with the creature, and ultimately calls for Chen Ran’s help; he captures the Year Beast, which later produces an egg identified as Xie. 201 202 204

Xi is described as a fairy-like woman from a painting, with an elegant yet delicate appearance. Her body and apparent age vary substantially with the vessel she inhabits. 155 174 190

Xi presents herself as aloof, proud, and sharp-tongued, but is notably timid when faced with unfamiliar threats or Chen Ran’s teasing. She is easily embarrassed, defensive about her dignity, and prone to calling Chen Ran a “rake” or “scoundrel.” Her siblings describe her as tsundere: harsh in speech but soft-hearted in practice. 156 163 172

A lifelong shut-in, Xi is inexperienced with modern technology and ordinary life. Her introduction to a tablet quickly becomes an obsession; she criticizes AI-generated art while spending long periods absorbed in it. 183 186
