Background / History

Before Sasuke’s Return

Orochimaru was among the shinobi whom Hanzō named the Sannin. He later belonged to Akatsuki and conducted experiments involving reincarnation, Cursed Seals, cloned Sharingan, and transplanted bloodlines 2 7 46.

During the Konoha Crush, he worked with Baki and killed the Fourth Kazekage, Rasa. The Third Hokage sealed the souls of his arms with the Reaper Death Seal, leaving him unable to use ninjutsu. Shortly before the reborn Sasuke reached him, Orochimaru had performed Living Corpse Reincarnation using a test subject and still intended to take Sasuke as his next vessel 2 42.

The Ruined Future

In the original future, Orochimaru and Sasuke became the Shinobi World’s only survivors after Ōtsutsuki Shi Mei’s attack. Orochimaru rescued the critically wounded Sasuke aboard a spacecraft left by Kara. Shi Mei subsequently drained their planet through a God Tree and departed after attaining godhood 1.

During Sasuke’s final ten years, Orochimaru became like family to him. While Sasuke despaired, Orochimaru continued researching methods that might allow him to challenge the gods again. His discoveries included a proposed route to reconstructing Ōtsutsuki power and techniques for controlling the Shinigami 1 5.

Orochimaru used Karasuki to send Sasuke’s soul forty years into the past, carrying a record of his own knowledge and emotions. He concealed that the procedure would destroy him as well as Karasuki, allowing Sasuke to leave believing they might meet again 1 2.

Transformation in the Altered Timeline

The younger Orochimaru initially confronted Sasuke as a prospective vessel. Sasuke exploited his confidence in his immortal body to implant the future self’s chakra sphere. Experiencing the consequences of his former ambitions caused Orochimaru to abandon that relationship and accept Sasuke as his guiding partner 2.

His first priorities became restoring his arms, earning Kabuto’s informed cooperation, and building Sasuke’s foundation for becoming an Ōtsutsuki. After capturing the Shinigami, he transferred Hashirama Senju’s chakra into Sasuke through a redesigned Cursed Seal 3 5.

Appearance

Orochimaru has long hair and slit-pupiled eyes. His original-future self is described with purple-gold eyes and a low, hoarse voice 1 2.

  • Serpentine transformations: Can replace his legs with a snake’s tail and manifest an enormous eight-headed serpent body 2.
  • Shinigami unsealed form: Develops symmetrical horns, dark-gray eyes, and a “卍”-shaped forehead mark 5.
  • Unsealed attire and markings: Wears a seemingly illusory white haori, flickering black inscriptions, ancient prayer beads, a sword, and a bell-shaped ritual implement 5.

Personality

Before receiving his future memories, Orochimaru is manipulative and confident enough in his bodily immortality to underestimate Sasuke. He exploits Sasuke’s desire for revenge and regards him as a reincarnation vessel. The inherited memories expose the dead end of those ambitions, producing humility, affection, and a willingness to follow Sasuke’s judgment 2.

His changed outlook is especially clear in his treatment of subordinates. He allows Kabuto to question him, values Kabuto’s life above satisfying his curiosity, and insists that Karin choose whether to inherit the Evil God’s eyes. Nevertheless, he remains willing to arrange lethal trials, sacrifice enemies, and use personal grief as leverage when advancing the group’s plans 3 5 24 26 27 28.

His curiosity and inventiveness survive this transformation. He seeks Sasori’s unrevealed weapon, treats divine beings as powers that can be sealed and repurposed, and argues that Sasuke’s resourcefulness matters more than inherited strength alone 10 15 27.

Abilities & Skills

Serpentine Techniques and Bodily Survival

  • Shedding technique: Expels a fresh body from his mouth after Sasuke pierces his chest 2.
  • Myriad Snake Formation: Releases countless snakes carrying Kusanagi Swords from their mouths 2.
  • Eight Branches Technique: Produces an eight-headed serpent that sheds its Amaterasu-burning skin 2.
  • Snake hands: Extends serpents from his sleeves to restrain Karin and capture White Zetsu 24 45.
  • Living Corpse Reincarnation: Transfers into replacement bodies. His recent use prevents him from relying on it to escape the Shinigami ritual’s price 2 3 5.

Soul Concealment and Shinigami Sealing

  • Soul Concealment Technique: Hides his soul so the Shinigami cannot locate and consume it 5.
  • Six Paths Shinigami Coffin Seal: Draws the Shinigami into his body, making him its jinchūriki 5.
  • Hokage abilities: Can access the powers of the four Hokage within the Shinigami, including the Second and Fourth Hokage’s Flying Thunder God Technique 5 8.
  • Limit: Maintaining the Shinigami’s unsealed power strains him; his stated maximum is five minutes 6.

White Cursed Seal Development

Orochimaru redesigns Sasuke’s Cursed Seal of Heaven into a vessel for gradually absorbing Hashirama’s complete power rather than merely borrowing an external chakra supply 5 6 9.

  • Power transfer: Uses a white snake to deliver Hashirama’s chakra into Sasuke’s seal 5.
  • Preserved identity: Intends Sasuke to gain Hashirama’s full power while remaining an Uchiha 9.
  • Progressive absorption: Released power becomes Sasuke’s own, increasing his capacity to release and absorb further power 6 49.
  • Adaptive Modification: Adds environmental adaptation through enhancements including Soft Body Modification. Underwater, State Two develops functional gills and a dorsal fin 50.
  • Permanent extensions: States that his added white cursed arts will remain after Sasuke fully absorbs the seal’s core 50.

Genetic and Dōjutsu Research

  • Ōtsutsuki reconstruction theory: Proposes combining Six Paths power with genetic segments missing from the Sage of Six Paths’ lineage, specifically those associated with the Ten-Tails and Hamura 1.
  • Ocular evolution theory: Believes Sasuke’s prematurely awakened Rinnegan interrupted a transitional stage and restricted his eventual potential 1.
  • Sharingan cloning: Uses Uchiha Ke’s right Mangekyō as the template for Shin’s cloned eyes; creates Shin’s early clones with Kabuto 7.
  • Hashirama-cell vessels: Creates a miniature being to sustain Ke’s right eye and later directs Kabuto to receive the eye and its cells 7 8.
  • Uzumaki research: Attributes the clan’s vitality and affinity for tailed-beast power to inherited genes from the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 34.

Sealing Innovations

  • Hundredfold Unbinding Talisman: Breaks the concealment technique over Kakuzu’s buried gold vault 35.
  • Improved Yang Seal: Adapts an ancient Uzumaki formula to refine external nature chakra into Yin Release chakra for Sasuke’s eyes 36 37.
  • Yang Seal limitation: The Dragon Vein-powered version provides a finite reserve that cannot replenish itself. Its immediate purpose is to preserve Sasuke’s vision until he obtains Fugaku’s eyes 41.
  • Yin-Yang Severance Cursed Seal: Cuts a captured White Zetsu clone’s telepathic connection to the others, despite that connection being maintained through the Demonic Statue 45.

Evil God Capture

  • Ritual knowledge: Finds documents in Jashin Cult ruins describing how sacrificing a devotee can summon the Evil God 27.
  • Death: Evil Sealing Method: Uses his own seal, the Shinigami’s power, and its ritual bell to bind the deity into a pair of Ketsuryūgan 27.
  • Result: The eyes become a “shrine” through which the god’s sacrificial power can be wielded 27.
  • Wielder requirements: Selects Karin for her Uzumaki constitution and regeneration, but leaves acceptance to her 27 28 34.

Sensory and Reanimation Techniques

  • Enhanced sensing: In Shinigami Unbound Mode, locates Karin despite her concealed chakra, twenty kilometers from the destroyed Northern Hideout 19.
  • White Zetsu detection: Possesses a researched method for sensing these products of Infinite Tsukuyomi 45.
  • Impure World Reincarnation: Prepares to reanimate Gaara using White Zetsu as a sacrifice, though Chiyo’s arrival provides another solution 45 46.
  • Reaper-based survival test: Attempts a ritual using Suigetsu’s and Jugo’s biological samples. Its failure leads the group to conclude they are still alive 20.

Equipment / Items

  • Karasuki — Time-traveling turtle secretly held by the original-future Orochimaru. Sending only a soul into its younger body transports one person to an unpredictable moment and destroys the device 1.
  • Chakra memory sphere — Contains his future knowledge, memories, and emotions; travels within Sasuke’s soul before being implanted into his younger self 1 2.
  • Shinigami mask — Retrieved from the Uzumaki Mask Hall to summon the Shinigami; shatters when Orochimaru captures it 4 5.
  • Shinigami ritual bell — Used to suppress the Evil God during its sealing 27.
  • Uchiha Ke’s left Mangekyō Sharingan — Retained by Orochimaru; he describes its Blade Reversal ability as more combat-effective than the right eye’s 7.
  • Tailed Beast Colossus blueprints — Takes Sasori’s design scroll after the first battle 17.
  • Kakuzu’s gold fortune — Retrieves the hidden cache, seals it in a scroll, and swallows the scroll for safekeeping 35.
  • Crystal ball — Used with Kabuto to observe Sasuke’s fight against Kisame 49 50.

Relationships

  • Sasuke Uchiha — Former intended vessel, student, and enemy; becomes family to the original-future Orochimaru. In the altered timeline, Orochimaru follows his lead and regards their research partnership as mutually fulfilling 1 2 50.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Trusted subordinate whose loyalty Orochimaru rebuilds through transparency and proof. He encourages Kabuto’s potential and gives him Ke’s right Mangekyō rather than keeping it himself 3 5 8.
  • Karin — Subordinate valued for her sensory abilities. He enables her acquisition of the Ketsuryūgan while defending her right to make that decision independently 28 34.
  • Sasori — Former rival over competing notions of eternity. Orochimaru arranges his battle with Sasuke, then honors his final request and declines to disturb his resting soul through reanimation 11 17.
  • Kakuzu — Target chosen partly for his wealth. Orochimaru secures his fortune by offering the possibility—not a guarantee—of reunion with his murdered family once Sasuke awakens the Rinnegan 20 26.
  • Hidan — Targeted for the Four Pillars God Plan; ultimately sacrificed to summon and capture the Evil God 20 27.
  • Uchiha Shin — Former experimental subject whose cloned eyes derive from Ke’s Mangekyō. Orochimaru defers to Sasuke on how to recover the original eye 7.
  • Jugo — Voluntary experimental subject seeking control over his murderous impulses. His reluctance to oppose Orochimaru stems from Kimimaro’s admiration for him 29.
  • Suigetsu Hōzuki — Former subordinate who denies having genuine loyalty to him and joins Obito after capture 29.
  • Baki, Temari, and Kankuro — Former collaborator and the children of Rasa, respectively. His murder of Rasa remains a source of hatred despite his expressed regret and later assistance 42 43.
  • Obito Uchiha — Strategic adversary whose conflict with Nagato informs Orochimaru’s planning. He promises to intervene if Obito disrupts Sasuke’s second battle 21 22.

Story Role / Major Arcs

The Ten Battles Plan

Orochimaru designs a one-year program to accelerate Sasuke’s absorption of Hashirama’s power. He rejects a faster schedule because it would cause irreversible damage and limit Sasuke’s future growth 6.

Phase / Battle Opponent or Activity Orochimaru’s Purpose
Initial two months Continuous White Cursed Seal release in daily life Adaptation before absorption 6.
First battle Sasori, at Tenchi Bridge Exploits a gap in Sasuke’s knowledge and investigates Sasori’s unrevealed final scroll 10 11.
Second battle Kakuzu and Hidan Provides another lethal trial while pursuing Kakuzu’s wealth and Hidan’s unusual power 20 22.
Third battle Kisame, at Heavenly Gate Gorge Tests Sasuke against an opponent whose strength increases with the power available to absorb 47 49.
Remaining schedule Opponents not yet fixed Plans one extreme battle each month, selecting enemies according to Sasuke’s growth 6.

During the first two matches, Orochimaru prevents concerned allies from intervening, trusting Sasuke to survive through the White Cursed Seal. His calm appearance conceals anxiety during the second battle 13 24 25.

Akatsuki Retaliation and Relocation

  • Sasori’s death prompts Pain to order Orochimaru’s execution and an attack on the Northern Hideout 18.
  • Orochimaru accompanies Sasuke to the ruins and locates Karin, enabling her rescue 19.
  • He closes the old hideout network and dismisses most peripheral personnel, concentrating the group’s work on Blue Moon Island 20.
  • The loss of Kakuzu’s fortune compromises Akatsuki’s funding and its Tailed Beast Weapons project 30 31.

Land of Wind Expedition

  • Retrieves Kakuzu’s gold and directs the group toward Rōran as a solution to Sasuke’s deteriorating eyesight 34 35.
  • Coordinates a three-day Dragon Vein operation: Kabuto suppresses the chakra with Wood Release, Karin watches for intruders, and Sasuke refines the Yang Seal 37 41.
  • Orders treatment for Baki after Karin’s confrontation with the Sand team, then explains the intended visit to Chiyo 42.
  • Supports Sasuke’s decision to rescue Gaara, captures White Zetsu, and prepares reanimation as a fallback. Chiyo instead revives Gaara through Life Reincarnation 43 45 46.

Trivia

  • Despite its name, the Six Paths Shinigami Coffin Seal has no actual connection to Six Paths power. The future Orochimaru named it as a tribute to the founder of Ninshū 5.
  • He interprets true eternity as something sustained by the “heart” through change and decay, rather than merely preserving a body 17.
  • His knowledge remains incomplete: he presents Itachi’s possible use of Shikkotsu Forest sage power to preserve his eyesight as a tentative theory, not an established fact 36.
