"A familiar ceiling..."
His vision shifted from blurry to clear, revealing a stark white ceiling as the cool scent of disinfectant filled his nostrils.
Asami Ri stared at the ceiling for a long while, then let out a soft chuckle.
This was Konoha Hospital, a place he had been visiting far too often lately.
"This makes three times now, doesn't it?"
Three hospitalizations for serious injuries in barely a year. Even for a ninja who lived on the edge of a blade, that was a little too frequent.
He tried moving his fingers. The sensation in his palm felt fairly responsive.
Lowering his head to check his body, he found none of the layers upon layers of bandages he had expected to see wrapped around him like a mummy.
Aside from the loose hospital clothes he wore, there were only a few small scrapes on his skin.
Rather than physical injuries, the main problem this time was the weakness brought on by Chakra depletion.
Bracing himself against the edge of the bed, he slowly sat up. The moment his toes touched the floor, an intense wave of exhaustion swept through his entire body.
Asami Ri walked slowly to the window and opened it a crack.
Bitter winter wind poured through the gap, clearing his groggy mind considerably.
Outside, Konoha's streets had not grown desolate with winter's arrival. Instead, they bustled with life and prosperity.
There were two reasons behind that prosperity. First, the approaching New Year had filled the villagers with the joy of bidding farewell to the old and welcoming the new;
second, the sweeping victory on the Kirigakure front had finally let a ray of hope shine through the clouds of war that had hung over Konoha for so long.
On that blood-soaked coastal battlefield, Minato Namikaze had become the unstoppable "Yellow Flash."
With the overwhelming advantage of the Flying Thunder God Technique, he had virtually single-handedly blocked the Third Mizukage's assault while tearing through Kirigakure's main force in an incredibly short time.
The losses suffered by the Kirigakure Ninja in that battle had been chilling. Nearly half their elite vanguard had died to the Rasengan.
Now, Minato Namikaze's name was not merely Konoha's pride. It struck terror into enemy ninja at the mere mention.
Even civilians who knew nothing of the broader situation could sense the changing tide as news of victory spread through the streets.
Throughout the long and brutal Third Shinobi World War, whether facing Kumogakure's aggression, the stalemate with Iwagakure, or Kirigakure's treachery, hopes of breaking through at almost every decisive moment had rested on Minato Namikaze.
That was no exaggeration.
Looking at the war as a whole, Minato Namikaze had swept away powerful enemies on every front with almost miraculous efficiency, securing nearly half of its decisive victories.
The "Yellow Flash" was no longer merely a prodigy of the younger generation. He had become something closer to a pillar of Konoha, shouldering half the village's war effort amid the flames of battle.
Whether on the smoke-filled front lines or in the bustling village, Minato Namikaze was indisputably becoming the leading figure of his era.
The hospital room's sliding door opened quietly.
Minato Namikaze entered in casual clothes. The intimidating edge he had carried on the battlefield was gone, replaced by an approachable warmth.
He carried a bamboo basket filled with fresh fruit and set it on the bedside table.
"Ri, you're awake. How are you feeling?" Minato sat down on the wooden chair beside the bed, concern in his voice.
Asami Ri steadied himself and turned his head, meeting Minato's gaze. A faint smile appeared on his pale face. "I'm all right, Sensei. My Chakra was just badly depleted. I may need some time to recover."
"What matters most is that you're alive." Minato smiled faintly, then his gaze grew more serious, his tone solemn. "Now that you're conscious, could you tell me exactly what happened?"
Asami Ri fell silent for a moment, rapidly choosing his words.
He left out the details of how he had absorbed Chakra, instead steering his account toward the dangers lurking throughout the battlefield.
"Kirigakure's plan was vicious." Asami Ri's voice was low, carrying lingering dread. "They deliberately let us take Rin because they'd already forcibly sealed the Three-Tails inside her. They intended to use her as a living bomb, releasing the tailed beast once she returned to Konoha Camp and destroying it from within."
Minato's breathing grew a little heavier. He understood how perilous the situation had been.
Asami Ri continued, mentioning that Kakashi's left eye had undergone some sort of transformation under extreme anguish and despair, gaining powerful Eye Power beyond that of an ordinary Sharingan.
Finally, Asami Ri's tone grew especially grave.
"Sensei, what unsettled me most wasn't the Kirigakure ninja... it was that 'person' who suddenly entered the battlefield." Asami Ri frowned, recalling that chalk-white figure. "He was a strange man, completely white, with an extremely distorted body. No matter how I looked at it, the power he displayed... seemed like the legendary Wood Release."
"Wood Release..." Minato repeated thoughtfully, an unshakable gravity settling over his brow.
"After taking you all to the hospital, I immediately went back to the scene. But strangely enough, when I reached that coast, all traces of Wood Release had been wiped clean. Only the dismembered bodies of Kirigakure ninja remained, as though someone had deliberately 'erased' the evidence."
Minato considered this. "In other words, an unknown force we never noticed has been secretly intervening in the struggle between Konoha and Kirigakure. Not only do they possess the long-lost Wood Release, but they also operate with extreme secrecy."
After a brief silence, he set aside his complicated emotions and looked at Asami Ri. "Then what about your Storm Release? If I remember correctly, that should be a kekkei genkai unique to Kumogakure."
"Ever since my last fight with that Storm Release ninja from Kumogakure, I've been experimenting privately with ways to combine water Chakra and lightning release Chakra." Asami Ri calmly met Minato's gaze, his tone steady. "All my earlier attempts failed. This time, when we were surrounded with no way out, I tried Storm Release again so I could get them through... I got lucky..."
"Achieving a breakthrough in nature fusion under the pressure of life and death goes well beyond 'luck.'" Minato looked at his student with pride, his eyes full of approval. "That's an extraordinary achievement."
He sighed softly, a more reflective look entering his eyes. To Minato, the boy before him possessed composure far beyond his years, and his ability to assess a chaotic situation was remarkably like his own.
"Ri, thank you for everything you did this time," Minato said. "If you hadn't fought desperately to hold out until the end, Kakashi and Rin... might never have returned. You saved them, and you saved Konoha."
Faced with such high praise from his teacher, Asami Ri merely shook his head gently.
"Sensei, you're giving me too much credit." Asami Ri turned to look at the increasingly lively streets outside the window. "They're my teammates, and more importantly, they're my dearest friends."
