Background / History
Li Feng transmigrated into the body of a poor temporary runner and awakened the Heavenly Dao Advance Panel. His predecessor had worked at the City Guard Office for several months, acquiring some familiarity with martial fundamentals but no actual cultivation foundation 1 5.
His father was a veteran constable who rescued the starving Lin Yanqiu and brought her into the family as a prospective bride for Li Feng’s sickly elder brother. His brother died before the marriage, and his father subsequently died after years of lingering injuries and the grief of losing his son. Lin nevertheless supported the household, entered the City Guard Office, rose to Chief Constable, and secured Li Feng’s temporary appointment 2.
Despite Lin’s position, Li Feng could not afford a cultivation manual or martial-school apprenticeship. Her own office-issued cultivation method could not legally be shared with him. Her connections instead gave him access to the office’s archery grounds, where he learned a practical means of self-defense 1.
Appearance
- Before cultivation: Described as thin and frail; Chief Constable Chen recalls his unsteady steps and disordered breathing when he first joined the office 5 6.
- On duty: Wears the auxiliary constables’ regulation uniform 4 6.
- Off duty: Changes into ordinary coarse-cloth clothing, preferring not to feel as though he is still working 9.
Personality
Li Feng is restrained and difficult to provoke. Having lived two lives, he dismisses an instructor’s mockery and answers Clerk Wang’s contempt by demonstrating his strength rather than arguing. He also declines Sun Yan’s challenge, choosing to appear weaker rather than create an unnecessary enemy 1 6 7.
His caution does not prevent decisive violence when threatened. During his first lethal encounter, he kills three attackers and refuses to spare the survivors because they have seen his face and already formed a grudge. His lack of fear or nausea surprises him; he concludes that such cold-bloodedness may be necessary for survival 9.
He is deeply attached to Lin Yanqiu and wants to repay her protection. Her injury turns his preference for a quiet life into a determination to pursue stronger cultivation. He saves money for her treatment, declines expensive entertainment, and persists through exhausting practice despite his limited food supply 2 5 8 10.
Abilities & Skills
Heavenly Dao Advance Panel
Li Feng’s supernatural panel grants the highest level of a learned skill in advance, with the required effort repaid afterward 1.
- Prerequisite: He must personally reach beginner level before the panel records a skill and permits an advance 5.
- Knowledge and experience: Advances supply deeply ingrained technique insights and combat experience, rather than merely superficial knowledge 5 9.
- Available advances: Completing his archery repayment leaves one advance; perfecting the Water-Cutting Saber Art consumes it, leaving none available 1 5.
- Repayment quality: Casual saber practice earns no progress. A fully focused session raises repayment from 0% to 2% 10.
- Physical cost: Repayment training consumes stamina, qi, and blood. Severe hunger forces him to stop, making adequate food or medicinal meals necessary for faster repayment 10.
- Visibility: The panel’s display is visible only to him 1.
Archery
His shooting earns An Hongye’s assessment that only a handful of people in the City Guard Office can match him 1.
- Shatters several wooden targets with successive arrows 1.
- According to An Hongye, surpasses Lin Yanqiu and a constable known for piercing a willow leaf at a hundred paces in pure archery 1.
- Cannot improve further without raising his Martial Dao realm, according to An Hongye 1.
Water-Cutting Saber Art
A seemingly low-grade gang saber art becomes Li Feng’s principal close-combat technique after he advances it to perfection 5.
- Coordinates whole-body strength through slashes, cuts, cleaves, and the water-cutting movement 5.
- Unexpectedly cultivates qi and blood as well as a trace of saber force; Li Feng suspects the art is less ordinary than it appears 5.
- Lets him evade an incoming strike and kill his first attacker in one exchange, then defeat the remaining two with three consecutive moves 9.
- Does not eliminate the danger posed by large groups: he declines to intervene in a battle involving dozens of armed gang members 8.
Qi-Blood Strength and Control
- Lifts a 300-jin stone weight overhead and holds it for several minutes without strain. Clerk Wang judges his strength comparable to minor attainment within the first stage, though Li Feng states he has only just entered it 6.
- Keeps his martial aura restrained, then deliberately releases enough for Lin Yanqiu to verify his realm 10.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Standard-issue runner’s saber — Used for learning the Water-Cutting Saber Art and defending himself in the alley 1 5 9.
- Water-Cutting Saber Art manual — A battered booklet taken from a corpse during gang-battle cleanup; he later considers selling it to fund training 4 5 10.
- Large black bow — Uses it at the training grounds, then returns it to an attendant before leaving 1.
- Silver and jewelry — Takes more than twenty taels and jewelry from his attackers’ bodies; considers selling the jewelry to improve his food supply 9 10.
Relationships
- Lin Yanqiu — Sister-in-law in family usage, although she never formally married his brother. His protector and benefactor; her injury motivates him to become stronger and seek money for treatment 2 3 10.
- An Hongye — Archery instructor who praises and defends him. Offers to register him for the following month’s Archery Guessing Tournament 1.
- Wang Meng — Lin’s subordinate and a concerned acquaintance. Alerts Li Feng to her injury and urges him to prioritize survival when choosing a career 2 4.
- Zhang San — Fellow White Runner and patrol companion who shares local information and invites him to socialize 4 7 8.
- Chen Song — Fellow runner and patrol companion; accepts Li Feng’s need to save money for Lin’s medicine 7 8.
- Sun Yan — Wealthier colleague who mocks the loss of Lin’s protection and challenges him. Li Feng rejects his offer of guidance but avoids a fight 7.
- Clerk Wang — Records official cultivation levels. Changes from contempt to respect after witnessing Li Feng’s strength test 6.
- Chief Constable Chen — An acquaintance through Lin’s neighboring jurisdiction; praises Li Feng’s apparent talent and asks after her condition 6.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Securing a Martial Foundation
- Completes his archery repayment and accepts An Hongye’s tournament invitation for the potential prize money 1.
- After Lin is severely injured by an escaped death-row convict, faces pressure to resign before her replacement can exploit his unqualified appointment 2 3.
- Finds the saber manual during cleanup in Changle Ward, trains overnight, and enters the qi-blood first stage 4 5.
- Registers his new realm, removing the qualification problem without becoming a permanent runner 6.
Gang Conflict and First Killings
- Watches the Green Bamboo Gang overpower the Black Tiger Gang while the City Guard Office orders noninterference 8.
- Is mistaken for a Black Tiger accomplice and attacked by three Green Bamboo members. He kills them; their leader later misidentifies the killer as a Black Tiger avenger and decides against pursuit 9.
Lin Yanqiu’s Treatment and Training Costs
- Reveals his cultivation to Lin and gains her conditional acceptance of his decision to remain at the office 10.
- Seeks funds for Black Jade Bone-Molding Paste, priced at approximately 200 taels for the less effective variety and 500 taels for the best. Lin rejects risking his life or career for it and warns him against pursuing the convict’s bounty 10.
- Reaches 2% saber-art repayment and estimates roughly fifty days to finish at that pace, but discovers that hunger limits further practice 10.
