Background / History
Early career and accumulated losses
Kakashi was a prodigy who advanced through Konoha’s ranks unusually quickly and became Minato Namikaze’s student. His confidence in developing Chidori at twelve outpaced his judgment: Minato had to intervene to save him during a mission 39 270.
The losses of Obito, Rin, Kushina, and Minato left Kakashi deeply self-critical. He later admits that he once considered ending his life, believing he had failed to protect the people who mattered to him. His recollection of Rin centers on the hand that pierced her chest 178.
After serving as Anbu Captain, he returns to ordinary jonin duties but struggles with the adjustment. He prefers working alone and initially tells the Third Hokage that he is not ready to lead genin 31.
The attack on Naruto
Hiruzen initially presents Kakashi’s assignment as an order to assassinate Naruto. Its actual purpose is to expose the child’s hidden abilities and establish whether he can withstand threats from factions that want to control or weaponize him. Kakashi objects because Naruto is a child and Minato’s son, but ultimately accepts the mission 32 34 35.
Naruto’s fundamentals force Kakashi to escalate from kunai and clone tactics to his Sharingan and Lightning Blade. Naruto escapes the decisive attack with Flying Thunder God, moving too quickly for Kakashi to track 33 34 35 37.
Kakashi returns visibly drained and reports that Naruto has surpassed even Hiruzen’s expectations. Much later, Minato confirms that he arranged a seal on Kakashi after the attack: it protected Naruto while also preventing Kurama from killing Kakashi in retaliation 37 178.
Return to the Hatake legacy
Following more than a year of missions against rogue ninja and terrorist groups, Kakashi returns to Konoha carrying a short blade and a long sword. His killing intent and controlled seriousness contrast sharply with his earlier languor 62.
His renewed strength comes from revisiting Sakumo’s records and training in his father’s swordsmanship. With the Sharingan’s constant chakra consumption limiting his ninjutsu progress, Kakashi increasingly makes swordplay his primary method and uses ninjutsu in support 147 552.
Hiruzen entrusts him with delivering Shisui’s rogue-ninja notice to Kirigakure and negotiating the village’s demands for compensation. During his encounters there, Kakashi demonstrates enough speed to split a mist screen maintained by at least five ninja and place Mei Terumi under immediate threat 62 71.
Teaching Team 7 and making amends
Kakashi becomes the instructor of Naruto, Sasuke, and Hinata. Believing they already understand teamwork and possess strong fundamentals, he cancels the usual introductory assessment and instead prepares a lesson on survival and judgment 81.
His first exercise exposes Hinata and Sasuke’s dependence on Naruto. A staged injury causes Hinata to abandon her opponent, while Sasuke retreats without sufficiently testing the enemy or recognizing Hinata’s earlier success 84 85.
Kakashi then challenges Naruto directly. Although he claims Naruto will face a clone, he secretly fights in person. Naruto’s Sage Art: Rasengan wounds him, and Kakashi exploits Naruto’s shock at drawing blood to end the match with a finger flick. He identifies Naruto’s lack of experience with real violence as his central weakness 86 87.
Afterward, Kakashi admits that he was Naruto’s childhood attacker. He describes putting his life in Naruto’s hands as an attempt to make amends. Naruto accepts the revelation without demanding further explanation and insists that Kakashi pay for the group’s ramen 87.
Kirigakure and the Akatsuki investigation
During a later Kirigakure mission, Kakashi hears Mei’s concerns about Yagura’s changed behavior and receives Shisui’s apparently lifeless body from the Mizukage. He remains wary of gaps in Yagura’s account and the decision to surrender a body containing valuable Sharingan 105 106.
While traveling with his students and Mei, he investigates an Orochimaru hideout and survives its destruction trap. He also impersonates Itachi at a bounty station, deliberately leaving misleading clues to attract Akatsuki members, then assigns Pakkun to watch for their red-cloud cloaks 121 129 130.
The operation draws Kakuzu and Hidan. Kakashi combines his attacks with Mei’s Water Release, using Rasengan and a lightning-enhanced blade to pierce Kakuzu’s heart and sever his head. Kakuzu nevertheless escapes by abandoning his body, leaving Kakashi to recover the head for investigation 132 134 135.
Itachi’s intelligence and Minato’s return
Hiruzen later sends Kakashi to meet Konoha’s undercover Akatsuki contact, Itachi. Their earlier fight had nearly ended in Itachi’s death because Kakashi’s swordsmanship prevented him from safely using Tsukuyomi to convey intelligence 131 147.
Itachi’s report implicates Yagura and identifies Obito as an Akatsuki member. Obito’s name shocks Kakashi so severely that he stops following the briefing and repeatedly uses Shadow Clones while attempting to regain his composure. His subsequent investigation at Kannabi Bridge produces no answers after roughly a month 148 153.
When Jiraiya suggests that Hiruzen is grooming him to become Fifth Hokage, Kakashi rejects the idea and instead raises his suspicion that Minato may still be alive. He eventually reaches Minato through Naruto’s inner world and chooses to support his plan rather than have his memories sealed and walk away 154 174 178.
That reunion marks a change in Kakashi’s view of himself. Rather than seeing only his failures, he accepts that he now carries others’ hopes and has become a teacher capable of taking responsibility 178.
Defending Konoha
During the Chunin Exams attack, Kakashi reacts immediately to the threat around Hiruzen, takes down Yagura’s two guards, and holds the Mizukage in combat 297.
He subsequently blocks a Kirigakure force numbering several hundred. By killing those who attempt to command it—including leaders, captains, and squad leaders—he prevents the army from organizing or crossing his defensive line. The enemy compares his performance to Sakumo’s battlefield legend 301.
Obito’s attempt to reclaim his eye
Obito later approaches Kakashi to retrieve the Sharingan he once gave him, despite the possibility that doing so could kill Kakashi. Kakashi senses the space-time disturbance, prepares guarded clones, and then pretends to believe Obito is secretly serving Minato’s plan 413.
The performance enrages and unsettles Obito. When Kakashi apparently agrees to return the eye, its pattern instead changes to Kotoamatsukami. Obito withdraws and spends nearly three days being examined by Black Zetsu, but neither can determine whether his thoughts were altered 413 414.
Later investigations and the Shinobi War
Kakashi participates in the investigation of the Daimyo Mansion, guiding Minato through hidden chambers and assessing the officials’ unusually intense fear of Konoha’s ninja. His suspicions draw on years of contact with threatened and purged political leadership 451.
As Konoha’s sole entrant in the Shinobi War’s third match, he faces Mifune. Unable to find an opening or safely rely on genjutsu, Kakashi commits to a lethal sword strike. He defeats Mifune in one blow but suffers a facial wound from the samurai’s sword aura 550 551 552.
Naruto’s hidden chakra heals Kakashi and saves Mifune before his soul drifts too far away. Kakashi then returns Mifune discreetly, avoiding patrols and a public humiliation that might inflame the Land of Iron’s hostility. In later fighting, he uses repeated ambushes and camp raids rather than relying solely on his superior direct combat ability 552 553 556.
Appearance
Kakashi is white-haired and usually conceals most of his face with a mask and forehead protector. The protector covers his left Sharingan when it is not in use 31 34 62.
- White hair: Initially neatly groomed; after his extended missions, it is unusually short and roughly cut 62.
- Left Sharingan: An implanted red eye with three tomoe in his early appearances 34 86.
- White armband: Wears an armband embroidered with a red triangle on his right shoulder after returning to Konoha 62.
- Back-mounted blades: Initially carries both a short blade and a long sword 62.
- Tired expression: Often appears listless, with faint dark circles visible during the Chunin Exams 31 62 254.
Personality
Kakashi’s casual, tired manner conceals a highly alert and methodical shinobi. He withholds personal information from his students, uses convincing performances to manipulate enemies, and prepares contingencies even when dealing with a former comrade 81 130 413.
His teaching is demanding but analytical. He explains the consequences of panic, incomplete information, and overdependence on teammates rather than treating defeat as a simple measure of talent. He teaches Sasuke and Hinata whatever they are capable of learning, while recognizing that Naruto chiefly needs experience and guidance rather than additional techniques from him 85 87 264.
Kakashi is loyal to Konoha without dismissing the suffering of outsiders. He sympathizes with Mei’s wish to reform Kirigakure but refuses to abandon his home, warning Naruto that intervention in an ally’s internal affairs could provoke war and endanger their loved ones 131 132.
His guilt remains powerful, but he gradually accepts responsibility without reducing himself to past failures. He also shows restraint after violence: he respects Mifune’s skill, worries about the consequences of killing him, and takes care to preserve his dignity after Naruto saves him 178 552 553.
Abilities & Skills
Hatake Swordsmanship
Kakashi painstakingly relearns Sakumo’s sword techniques and develops them into the foundation of his fighting style 147 552.
- Can fight with his eyes closed, denying opponents the straightforward eye contact needed for some dōjutsu tactics 147.
- Uses rapid blade attacks and lightning-enhanced thrusts for decisive kills 71 134.
- Targets enemy commanders to disrupt much larger forces 301.
- Defeats Mifune with one committed strike, though the victory still costs him a facial wound 552.
Lightning Release
Kakashi combines Lightning Release with close combat, swordplay, and accelerated movement 146 157.
- Chidori / Lightning Blade: His signature piercing technique; Lightning Blade is identified as S-rank 35.
- Lightning Blade: Edge: A blade-based attack used by his clone during Sasuke’s assessment 85.
- Lightning-enhanced weapons: Improves a sword’s penetrating power; Kakashi uses this to pierce Kakuzu after leaving Mei’s water technique 134.
- Lightning Flash: Stimulates the body for sustained high-speed travel without forming a lethal attack. It consumes less chakra than offensive ninjutsu but requires enhanced motion tracking to control direction 157.
- Visual requirement: Lightning Blade’s acceleration requires sufficient dynamic vision. Kakashi teaches it to both Sasuke and Hinata because the Sharingan and Byakugan can meet that requirement 264.
- Endurance limit: His rescue relay still leaves him collapsing from exhaustion 160.
Sharingan and Genjutsu
Kakashi’s left Sharingan was given to him by Obito. Its constant chakra drain limits his ninjutsu development 86 147 413.
- Tracks rapid movement during combat 86.
- Makes him a suitable non-Uchiha candidate to suppress the Nine-Tails 34.
- Supports genjutsu, including the illusion used to disable Hinata during training 84 85.
- Allows a genjutsu-mediated connection with Naruto’s inner world 174 178.
- Kotoamatsukami: Briefly uses Shisui’s technique against Obito; its actual effect is unresolved in the immediate aftermath 413 414.
- Kamui: Plans to use it to restrain Guy before the Eight Gates consume his life 600.
Clones and Transformation
Kakashi uses clones and disguises for combat, instruction, and intelligence operations 34 84 130.
- Lightning Clone Technique: Identified as one of his favored techniques 34.
- Shadow Clones: Fight multiple students, conceal the real Kakashi’s position, and guard his surroundings 84 87 413.
- Transformation Technique: Impersonates Itachi to plant clues and draw Akatsuki members toward a bounty station 129 130.
- One-handed seals: Creates two defensive clones while preparing for Obito’s approach 413.
Rasengan and Earth Release
Kakashi possesses supporting techniques beyond his signature lightning attacks 121 134.
- Rasengan: Interrupts Kakuzu’s Wind Release attack and knocks him out of Mei’s Water Dragon Bullet 134.
- Earth-Style Wall: Raises a barrier while escaping the trapped Orochimaru hideout 121.
Taijutsu and Eight Gates
Kakashi supplements his swordsmanship with close-combat techniques and an Eight Gates release 87.
- Briefly strengthens his body after Naruto wounds him, then uses Naruto’s hesitation to deliver a finger flick 87.
- Calls the move “Konoha Taijutsu Ultimate: Eight Gates Released Formation Secret Technique: Finger Flick” 87.
- The account does not specify how many gates he opens 87.
Intelligence, Command, and Instruction
Kakashi combines battlefield observation with political judgment and indirect intelligence gathering 85 106 130 132.
- Checks testimony against other sources rather than accepting Yagura’s account at face value 106 148.
- Uses planted information and deliberate flaws in a disguise to bait enemies 130.
- Summons Pakkun for surveillance and communication 130 157.
- Coordinates rescue roles around his team’s sensing, movement, and protection abilities 157.
- Teaches chakra nature transformation, lightning-based sword techniques, and combat decision-making 85 146 264.
