Background / History

Beginner Daoist

Lin Feng selects Daoist from five available roles because he expects a religious spellcaster to be better equipped against a “blood god” than a conventional warrior. The initially faceless character acquires his face, while its name remains locked to Lin Feng 1.

The character proves far stronger than expected: its panel names him a High Ritual Daoist of Dragon-Tiger Mountain and says he is already on Zhang Daoling’s shortlist. Nevertheless, reaching Clear Spring Stockade is difficult because the guide repeatedly dies when Lin Feng overlooks a hazard. Success comes only after he learns to anticipate threats, layer protections, and prevent the guide from answering dangerous voices 2 3.

Completing the mission removes the powerful template. Lin Feng retains Swordsmanship Mastery, but loses the Daoist class, ritual abilities, protective statuses, and equipment. His continued appearance as a young Daoist therefore conceals a much weaker character 4 5 13.

Western Hunan investigation

At Clear Spring Village Shrine, Lin Feng joins Hundred-Household Officer Zhu, Peng Tianli, Third Lady, and Liao Chi in searching for the Thirty-Six Stockades Map. Knowledge gathered through failed attempts lets him coordinate their abilities, though his mistaken belief that Five-Organs Incense threatens only humans leads to Peng Tianli’s death through his Striped Tiger 11.

The ensuing Blood God battle exposes the gap between sword technique and physical capacity. Third Lady weakens the enemy, Zhu fights alongside Lin Feng, and Liao Chi sacrifices himself to restrain it and pass on a demon seed. Lin Feng wins, but regards the narrow victory as evidence of poor timing and insufficient awareness 12.

He subsequently takes up the Shaman Priest’s independent cultivation path. The journey reveals that the Blood God is not merely a skinless corpse: its second phase is the transformed banyan tree at Clear Spring Stockade 19.

Divine authority and later encounters

Inside the Land God Temple, Lin Feng inherits the former deity’s authority through a dangerous priest’s writ. The succession also binds him to an ancient coffin and grants rights whose usefulness has diminished with the fall of the Han dynasty 94.

After Chi You nearly overwhelms him, Zhang Zhuoen rescues him and explains the difference between genuine immortality and the harmful shortcuts pursued by Corpse and A Lu Hun. Zhang later gives him two cultivation arts, providing an authentic transmission despite the loss of his original Daoist class 102 110.

The guide eventually recognizes Lin Feng outside their original journey. By then, the former grave robber has become an evil spirit through stolen lore and human-organ sacrifices. Lin Feng rejects his pleas for servitude and kills him, ending their long-running connection 116.

In later games, Lin Feng acts as a healer and exorcist while establishing worship of Zuan Wangye. He also protects the Little Daoist Boy and brings him to his lineage’s patriarch, allowing the boy to inherit the Quanzhen teaching Golden Lotus Grown in Fire and the name Daoist Ji 324 325.

Appearance

  • Selection-screen form: Faceless, wearing a high priest’s Daoist robe and carrying a sword on his back 1.
  • After selection: Gains a face identical to Lin Feng’s 1.
  • Early adventuring form: Appears as a young Daoist from Dragon-Tiger Mountain, despite losing the original class 5 6.
  • Later bearing: Long flowing hair, hanfu, a wooden sword, and an imposing presence noticeable even to his longtime friend Brother Chen 241.
  • Forehead mark: A jujube-red mark between his brows is visible to the Little Daoist Boy; in a divine dream manifestation, he appears as a towering three-eyed figure holding a Dharma Sword 292 324.

Personality

The Daoist’s decisions and manner are Lin Feng’s. Early confidence comes from seeing an apparently near-maximal character panel, but repeated failures teach him that powerful abilities cannot substitute for attention. He becomes more methodical, protecting the guide in advance rather than reacting after a threat appears 2 3.

He is competitive, irreverent, and willing to exploit repeatable game encounters. After barely defeating the Blood God, he studies his mistakes instead of celebrating. The guide remembers him as highly capable but frighteningly ill-tempered, frequently muttering about killing him during their journey 12 116.

His concern for others coexists with coercion and opportunism. He treats plague victims cheaply and turns away practitioners who would likely die confronting the Jin Family, while also using reputation, worship, and intimidation to strengthen his position 325.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

Swordsmanship Mastery is the sole ability permanently retained from the beginner template 3 4.

  • The initial high-powered body can release sword light thirty feet long 4.
  • The skill includes footwork and evasive movement, not merely cutting techniques 12.
  • Its practical strength depends on the user’s body and cultivation; Lin Feng cannot reproduce the template’s endurance immediately 5 12.
  • Repeated combat turns remembered techniques into instinct and begins forming what he perceives as a “sword soul” 15.
  • Later developments include Sword Heart Clarity, Precise Vision, and Sword Talisman: Break the Army 40 161.

Beginner Daoist Arts

The temporary Dragon-Tiger Mountain template possesses a broad ritual and spell repertoire 2.

  • Passive proficiencies: Talisman Mastery and Ritual Proficiency.
  • Listed active arts: Wind Riding, Samadhi True Fire, Command Spirits and Dispatch Generals, Armor Horse, Bean Soldiers, and Lingguan Possession 2.
  • Journey applications: Conceals human auras, layers protective spells, seals the guide’s mouth, and clears threats with wind and lightning 2 3.
  • Preparation requirements: Lingguan’s descent requires an altar and ritual; Bean Soldiers requires previously nurtured implements and incantations 4.
  • These arts are not retained when Act One ends 4 5.

Wind Cultivation and Intent

The Shaman Priest’s method offers cultivation without master-disciple obligations or institutional backing 19.

  • Qi Gathering improves stamina, perception, and bodily performance 26 30.
  • Wind can support movement and combat; the method describes much greater mobility as a distant, upper-rank possibility rather than an early achievement 22.
  • Crystallized Wind Intent lets him command nearby wind, place magical power in artifacts, and lodge consciousness in other things 316.
  • His chosen Intent becomes an irreversible foundation: changing it could destroy his body and Dao 316.

Land God Powers

Succession grants Lin Feng authority over the temple and several inherited resources, though some rights are obsolete or inaccessible 94.

  • Uses the Land God’s Six Tones in spiritual combat; by the Jin Family aftermath, he possesses four tones, including the protective Da Tone 159 316.
  • His completed staff senses earth and yin veins, living people, and gathered dead 159.
  • Can station Spectral Soldiers in Door God images and talismans to guard homes and enter dreams 162.
  • Uses his staff and Sacrificial Fire to ignite household hearths across Fukou, resisting supernatural darkness 162.
  • His emergence from the destroyed Nuo temple with ghosts following him may be Underworld Guiding, but he does not confirm that interpretation 116.

Spiritual Perception and Resistance

  • Unyielding: Identifies negative influences such as pain, fear, and beguilement, together with their source 102.
  • Taiyin Plain Body: Strengthens the soul through moonlight, runes, and power concentrated in the left eye 107.
  • Qi-Observing Dharma Eye: Three fused fragments reveal origin-energy flows, but their use worsens his injuries 241.
  • Third Eye: Can perceive hidden qi and extraordinary beings; witnessing something beyond his capacity causes his head to explode during the Yin-Shang ritual 301 362.
  • Taiyin cultivation requires mental restraint and observance of precepts to avoid an inhuman, malformed state 119.

Ritual Authority and Followers

Lin Feng increasingly acquires power through offerings, divine offices, and commanded spirits 148 292 325.

  • Receives incense offerings after taking the Five Directional Divine Generals’ talisman and regalia 292.
  • Uses a Luban-style possession rite to claim people recorded in a ritual booklet; he recognizes it as crude control rather than a legitimate Daoist register 299.
  • Raises approximately seven hundred Yin Soldiers during his healing campaign, but considers further recruitment difficult to control 325.
  • Can use ritual objects as mediums to contact greater powers, notably Yu Lei, without possessing formal Daoist credentials 343.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

Beginner Template

  • Dragon-Tiger Mountain High Ritual Sword — The template’s principal weapon 2.
  • Dragon-Tiger Mountain High Ritual Robes — Supplied with the initial class 2.
  • Seventh- and eighth-grade talismans — Included among its equipment 2.
  • Shangqing Firmament True Fire Talisman — A third-grade talisman 2.

All of this equipment is removed after the beginner mission 4 5.

Later Acquisitions

  • Land God’s staff / Dharma Sword — An eight-sided wooden sword refined from South Seas Jianmu, combining Land God and Mount Tai imagery 159 189.
  • Demon-Binding Rope — Formerly Seventh Rank, weakened to Ninth Rank when given to him by the Written Spirit 126.
  • Chi You’s Sword and Halberd — The surviving pieces of the incomplete Seventh-Rank Chi You’s Five Weapons 95.
  • Great Ming Fire Lance — A redeemed weapon supplied with three non-repeatable projectiles 244.
  • Blood-and-Flesh Sacrificial Bell — A reward from the Wraith Mother that he forcibly subdues 292.
  • Fengdu Ghost-Cursing Sutra — A developing artifact that uses Evil Ghosts as writing and strengthens through killing or cursing them 337.

Relationships

  • Guide — Initially protected through repeated beginner attempts. Regards Lin Feng as an orthodox Daoist master; later recognizes him after becoming an evil spirit and is killed by him 3 28 116.
  • Hundred-Household Officer Zhu — Combat partner who follows Lin Feng’s plans, helps pressure the guide, and fights alongside him against the Blood God 11 12 26.
  • Liao Chi — Teammate whose sacrificial restraint and demon seed enable the Blood God’s defeat. Later recognizes Wild Fox Chan and dragon-tiger qi together in Lin Feng 12 14.
  • Third Lady — Provides insect-repelling medicine, recovers the map with spiders, and weakens the Blood God before dying 11 12.
  • Peng Tianli — Initially mocks the young Daoist, then cooperates when Lin Feng demonstrates knowledge of the stockade’s dangers 5 11.
  • Li Pusa — Corpse driver who addresses him deferentially as Master Daoist, but understands that some of his statements could make the court condemn him as a sorcerer 24 89.
  • Zhang Zhuoen — Rescuer and transmitter of authentic cultivation arts; explains the dangers of heterodox immortality methods 102 110.
  • Little Daoist Boy / successor Daoist Ji — Protected follower who initially mistakes him for the Lord of Mount Tai. Lin Feng corrects that identity and later helps preserve the boy’s Dharma lineage 292 324.

Trivia

  • Selecting Daoist does not permanently grant the Daoist class. Lin Feng discovers his class field is empty only after clearing Act Two 13.
  • The guide repeatedly urges him to call on orthodox supernatural assistance, unaware that his original institutional advantages are gone 29.
  • Swordsmanship Mastery would cost 500 liang of Fortune to purchase, far beyond his early seven-qian balance 13.
  • The beginner panel’s promise that he will join the Celestial Master’s ranks belongs to the temporary template; it is not a documented later promotion 2 4.
