Background / History

Xinhu origins and recruitment

Bai Xiao comes from Xinhu, as does Qin Tian, a fellow investigator with whom he has faced life-and-death situations. Their shared experiences make Qin Tian’s judgment a decisive reason for Bai Xiao to trust Gao Ming 30.

During Chen Yuntian’s first encounter with him, Bai Xiao and Bai Qiao were the only survivors in a building affected by a level-three anomaly. Although investigators gave him an opportunity to leave, Bai Xiao followed them back inside. Chen later recognizes the same refusal to retreat when Bai Xiao fights Xia Yang 305.

Team One’s losses

After the Building Four anomaly on Minlong Street, Gao Ming and Zhu Miaomiao return without eight of the investigators who entered, including Bai Qiao. Bai Xiao initially questions Gao Ming coldly, struggling with grief and anger. He nevertheless refuses to blame a teammate for his own suffering and formally welcomes Gao Ming into Team One 30.

He subsequently prepares for a joint East District assignment involving a possible level-four anomaly—the event in which Qin Tian has died in that sequence of events 30.

Sishui Apartments and altered events

At Sishui Apartments, Bai Xiao appears in a blood-soaked raincoat, carrying two bone cleavers. His body contorts unnaturally, black writing crawls across his skin, and he attacks Gao Ming and Zhu Miaomiao. Zhao Xi restrains him while Zhu Miaomiao wounds him with a talisman-enhanced Fire Axe. Bai Xiao collapses, apparently dead, leaving recordings hidden in his Black Ring 43 44.

Later events follow a changed course. Gao Ming explicitly recalls Qin Tian’s death at Sishui Apartments as part of a previous experience, while the current sequence sends Qin Tian toward Hande Private Academy instead 107.

In this later course, Bai Xiao encounters Zhang Ding’s supermarket and reunites with Bai Qiao. Shadows have permeated her body, preventing her return to ordinary reality. Gao Ming offers her a continuing role protecting the supermarket and promises that the siblings can meet again 104 106.

Hande Private Academy

Gao Ming warns Bai Xiao that Situ An treats investigators as sacrificial offerings. Bai Xiao initially doubts this accusation, but privately contacts Qin Tian and learns that he is being sent to Hande Private Academy, where four earlier groups of investigators have disappeared 106.

Bai Xiao later enters Class Thirteen alongside Zhuo Jun. He and Gao Ming deliberately pretend not to know one another. He is also present when Zhuo Jun reports the Flesh-and-Blood Giant Tree’s appearance to Situ An 152 166.

Conflict with Security and forced testing

While searching for A Fang with Chen Yuntian, Bai Xiao rejects the assumption that all ghosts are evil, citing Zhang Ding’s willingness to save people. Security Team Four’s leader attempts to claim his knife, but Bai Xiao refuses 299 300.

When the same leader flees Xia Yang and tries to use ordinary investigators as a shield, Bai Xiao advances rather than retreats. Following Gao Ming’s signal, he wounds Xia Yang with the blade Gao Ming gave him, despite possessing no Ghost Markings at the time. Chen orders the other investigators to support him 304 305.

Afterward, Wan Jie pressures Bai Xiao to surrender the weapon in exchange for entry into the Security Department. The Jingtuo God intervenes and recruits him under the promise that he can keep it. On Chen’s advice, Bai Xiao goes with him, only to be placed in a lethal Ghost Marking test beneath the Mystery Analysis Institute 305 306.

Bai Xiao survives the third-stage fusion and condemns the analysts for deliberately turning investigators into sacrifices. He later survives the fourth-stage test alone, gaining greater power while struggling to preserve himself against the Malice Divine Corpse 310 327.

Loyalty to Gao Ming and later survival

News that Yuan Hui has killed Gao Ming affects Bai Xiao as though he has lost a friend who fought beside him through many lifetimes. His grief also disturbs the Malice Ghost God fused with him. Rather than directing his released malice solely at Wan Jie, he confronts Yuan Hui about Gao Ming’s death 386 387.

After a crowd of Gao Ming lookalikes intervenes, Bai Xiao joins Zhuo Jun against Wan Jie, repaying Zhuo Jun’s earlier help 388.

Later, Bai Xiao occupies a body whose original owner used the codename Black Crow and commanded a Night Watch team. He suspects the outpost chief, Old Loach, of contributing to his worsening instability 703.

In Xinhu Blood City, Gao Ming follows a bloodstained chain connected to Bai Xiao and finds him hiding in a senior recreation center. Bai Xiao and Number Two have been trying to reach the Saviors despite severe injuries and constant danger; Xinhu’s remaining will has helped keep them alive 828.

Personality

Bai Xiao is blunt, stubborn, and protective of his teammates. Although Zhu Miaomiao warns Gao Ming about his temper, he consciously restrains his anger after Bai Qiao’s disappearance. He considers taking personal pain out on others foolish and insists that teammates must not isolate or betray one another 30.

His courage does not depend on being unafraid. Chen remembers him acknowledging fear while still choosing to confront the threat. That resolve extends to resisting Security personnel who treat investigators as expendable and condemning analysts who sacrifice their own candidates 305 310.

His outlook on ghosts becomes more discriminating after meeting Zhang Ding. He recognizes that dangerous appearances do not necessarily imply evil and remains deeply attached to his sister. Gao Ming describes Bai Qiao as the one person capable of making him compromise or back down 299 519.
