Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Qi Refining, eighth level 25 Her first explicitly stated rank, equivalent to late-stage Qi Refining under ancient terminology. She is initially stalled at this level 170.
Qi Refining, ninth level 67 Breaks through while cultivating in seclusion. Jiang Yang learns of her advancement through his “Suitable Dao Companion” talent, which grants him cultivation feedback.
Qi Refining, ninth-level peak 129 Reaches the ninth-level peak within half a year of overcoming her eighth-level bottleneck, barely using elixirs. Xuan Xi suggests she may have resolved an emotional knot, but cannot establish the cause.
Qi Refining perfected; Foundation Establishment attempt 169 Reports that she has gathered the required spiritual qi, perfected her cultivation, and entered seclusion to establish her foundation.
Foundation Establishment 190 191 Succeeds after nearly five years in seclusion and forms Jade Bamboo Chant. Her breakthrough sends Jiang Yang enough feedback to bring him roughly seventy percent of the way toward Foundation Establishment’s middle stage.
Foundation Establishment, middle stage 376 Her advancement again provides Jiang Yang with feedback, triggering his own advance toward the late stage. He suspects her administrative duties have delayed her cultivation.
Foundation Establishment perfection 503 Has held this rank for nearly two years, supported by Dawn Rain Peak and resources Jiang Yang left her. Begins the first of three secret arts required for her path toward divine powers.

Background / History

Shang Qingzheng began cultivating as a child and was remembered by the Shang clan’s elders as a heaven-blessed prodigy. Her mother, Shang Sixian, was an heir of Grand Pitch Shang; her father, Song Ting, was a Thunder Cultivator of the Tribulation Pool. Sixian was also a close companion of Lin Xi Yu, who later became Qingzheng’s master 176 514 520.

According to Lin Xi Yu, the Shang threatened Qingzheng’s life to force Sixian into a supposed secret realm that was actually a trap designed to exploit her lineage. Lin Xi Yu rescued the child but could not save her mother. Sixian had entrusted Qingzheng to her care 514.

At Dawn Rain Peak, Qingzheng followed the Musical Dao, rather than her master’s Gui Water lineage. Xuan Xi arranged for Clear-Sound Jade Bamboo seedlings from the Heqiu Snowfield to be planted on Side Peak, preparing the spiritual qi she would eventually need for Foundation Establishment 51.

Her inheritance belongs to the Mystic Sound tradition. Lin Xi Yu later warns Jiang Yang that its ancient connection to thunder—“Mystic Sound into Thunder”—is implicated in a larger scheme involving a great being’s interest in the Shang lineage 514 517.

Appearance

Shang Qingzheng is repeatedly described with jade-like fairness and a graceful bearing; Jiang Yang considers her beauty unmatched among anyone he has seen in either of his lives 20 24.

  • Face: Round and fair, likened to a silver platter, with red lips, white teeth, and graceful eyebrows 15 24.
  • Clothing: Frequently wears long, pure-white dresses, including gauzy silk during her reunion with Jiang Yang in Peachwell Grove 112 129.
  • Signature accessory: A white jade dongxiao at her waist, decorated with a swaying golden tassel 13 129.
  • After Foundation Establishment: Her bearing becomes more otherworldly, and she appears radiant and spirited in a luminous white dress 192.

Personality

Qingzheng is gentle, sympathetic, and playful with people she trusts. Jiang Yang’s candid appraisal of her tea makes her like him more, while his account of an orphaned childhood prompts heartfelt sympathy. Her master regards her as sensitive and disinclined to compete with others 14 20 159.

Her reserve conceals homesickness and unresolved grief. Early in their acquaintance, Jiang Yang senses that she carries secret worries and seems reluctant to enjoy happiness fully. Later, she fears that waiting until Violet Palace to investigate her mother’s fate might leave no surviving witnesses 20 24 270.

Despite her shy manner around Jiang Yang, she is neither helpless nor passive. She insists on her competence after surviving attacks in the Blessed Land, personally gathers qi for her breakthrough, and becomes an authoritative administrator. Her growing ambition is accompanied by anxiety that Jiang Yang’s much faster advancement will leave her behind 99 129 485 496 503.

Abilities & Skills

Musical Dao

  • Plays the flute and sings songs from the Heqiu Snowfield 24.
  • Understands Middle Antiquity’s symbolic musical notation, in which meaning must be grasped inwardly rather than read plainly 131.
  • Performs the Phoenix-Approaching Score, evoking birds gathering around an imagined phoenix. The performance inspires Jiang Yang’s sword dance and a distant sense of new sword intent 131.
  • Possesses practical combat ability: she holds off multiple Lineage cultivators at the Star-Picking Tower and escapes through its Mystic Stratagem Spirit Array 129.

Nine Shao Pure Tone Melody

  • Releases inner demons, dispels outer evils, clears the heart, and soothes the spirit 151.
  • Is especially effective against techniques that bewitch the heart or confound the soul 151.

Pacifying War with Martial Might

  • Uses musical imagery of warfare giving way to peace to slow a listener’s magic power and diminish their will to fight 385.
  • Weakens an opponent’s momentum rather than directly injuring them 385.
  • Qingzheng suspects Great Peace Repose shares its origin, possibly having been composed by the same person 384 385.

Cultivation and Spiritual Qi Gathering

  • Her Jade Bamboo Chant foundation helps her regain mental clarity after grieving before her mother’s spirit tablet 191 520.
  • Gathers jade bamboo essence by striking mature jade bamboo with a Jade Pestle on nights with a bright moon and sparse stars, then collecting the clear-toned qi through a secret method 99.
  • Twelve gathering days produce one wisp; nine wisps make a portion. Weather restrictions make the actual preparation substantially longer than the nominal 108 days 99.
  • Her Violet Palace path requires three secret arts. By Chapter 503, she has begun the first; by Chapter 526, integrating her Secret Art remains work she must accomplish herself 503 526.

Peak Administration

  • Oversees Dawn Rain Peak’s resources, personnel, and everyday duties 266.
  • Selects nine late-stage Qi Refining disciples to accompany Xie Lezhi to the dangerous Towering Mine Vein 267.
  • Maintains order while other direct disciples are absent, in seclusion, or deceased, but repeatedly declines to take disciples of her own 267 496.
  • Her responsibilities reduce the time available for personal cultivation 269 376.

Connection to Jiang Yang’s Cultivation

  • Jiang Yang’s Suitable Dao Companion talent provides unseen assistance to companions he sincerely acknowledges, including support during cultivation and breakthroughs 170 190.
  • Qingzheng’s documented breakthroughs grant him cultivation feedback across physical distance 67 190 376.
  • The Peach Branch Dao Fruit designates her as his Dao companion; this is not an ability Qingzheng independently controls 414 517.
  • Jiang Yang later suspects that the golden karmic thread linking them also nourishes his divine powers 504.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Pure Tone Nine Shao Flute — A Spirit Artifact inherited from her mother. It carries the player’s emotions into listeners’ hearts and once unintentionally draws Jiang Yang into memories of his former life. Its possession also identifies Qingzheng as the Shang clan’s rightful patriarch under an ancient instruction 24 521.
  • Spirit-beast pact — A red-corded pact used with Little Sixteen 14.
  • Paired spirit-crane talisman — Divides into two reusable cranes bearing her and Jiang Yang’s spiritual signatures. Their continued existence also provides an indication that the other cultivator remains alive with their cultivation intact, though the Blessed Land places them beyond each other’s sensing range 29 129.
  • Jade Pestle and Heavenly Sound Conch — Implements used to produce and collect jade bamboo essence 99.
  • Mist-Rain Mirage Cloud — A Foundation Establishment Spirit Treasure sent by Jiang Yang. She later commissions the Pure Radiance Cloudlight Robe and Bright Flower Supreme Mystery Crown for him using leftover cloud material and other ingredients 100 194 195 502.
  • Phoenix-Approaching Score — An ancient Musical Dao work by Shang Wensu, given to her by Jiang Yang 131.
  • Pitch-Within Great Cluster Divine Scroll — A complete sixth-grade cultivation method received from Jiang Yang. Her family branch had inherited only three methods, the strongest of which was fifth grade; she worries the new scroll may be difficult to master 384.
  • Disordered Notes, Gentle Breeze, and Great Peace Repose — Three ancient musical scores supplied by Jiang Yang 384.
  • Shang succession token — Delivered in a jade box by Tinglan despite her refusal to become patriarch 521.
  • Violet Palace breakthrough Spirit Treasure — Confirmed to be in her possession after the Snowfield visit; its specific identity is not given in the provided account 526.

Relationships

  • Jiang Yang — Dao companion and childhood sweetheart. Their bond begins in the bamboo grove, develops through music, letters, and reciprocal gifts, and continues through years of separate cultivation. He promises her master that he will cherish her and helps investigate her mother’s fate 10 132 191 503 514.
  • Lin Xi Yu / True Person Dawn Rain / True Person Xuan Xi — Master, rescuer, and protective guardian. Prepares resources for Qingzheng’s distinct cultivation path and later warns her to settle her fixation before attempting the heart’s trial 51 514 515.
  • Li Zhouying — Childhood caretaker, confidante, and administrative partner, whom Qingzheng calls “Sister Zhouying.” Frequently teases her about Jiang Yang while helping her manage the peak 194 266 496.
  • Chi Yu / Little Sixteen / Civet Sixteen — Spirit-beast companion. Qingzheng feeds and raises her, worries about her safety, and struggles to discipline her after her fortune-based foundation makes her difficult to catch 14 111 194 384.
  • Shang Sixian — Mother and original owner of her flute. Qingzheng’s search for the truth about Sixian’s fate culminates in mourning before her spirit tablet and rejecting the clan’s official explanation 24 514 520.
  • Song Ting — Birth father, a Thunder Cultivator of the Tribulation Pool. The Shang reveal that he accompanied Sixian into the dangerous realm 514 521.
  • Xie Lezhi — Second senior sister, who leads Dawn Rain Peak’s reinforcement team to the Towering Mine Vein 51 267.
  • Lian Fei — Third senior sister. Her absence contributes to Qingzheng’s workload; Qingzheng expects her return to provide relief 51 269.
  • Shang Wensu — Ancestor and author of the Phoenix-Approaching Score. Their ancestral connection, initially uncertain because Qingzheng’s genealogy was lost, is confirmed in the clan records 131 523.
  • Tinglan — Deity bound to the ancestral qin Miaoxiang Tinglan. Recognizes her flute rather than her personal standing and grants her the succession token 521.
  • Grand Pitch Shang clan — Estranged birth family. Qingzheng identifies herself foremost as a Rain Xiang Mountain cultivator and refuses both reconciliation and the patriarch’s position 519 520 521.

  • By the end of the visit, she has resolved an emotional difficulty, organized part of her Dao Lineage, and secured the Spirit Treasure needed for her next breakthrough. Her Violet Palace advancement remains pending 526.
