Wen Ning was crouching by the entrance, brushing Big Yellow's fur. Ever since Big Golden Retriever had left, Big Yellow was the only dog he could pet every day.
But peaceful days never lasted. Sure enough, something else came up.

Wen Ning looked up and saw a little puppy standing at the mouth of the alley, barely bigger than his palm.
Its fur was light brown, its four paws were clean and white, and its soft ears flopped down on either side of its head.
Tears kept spilling from its big, dark eyes.
When it saw Wen Ning, it stumbled toward him on its short little legs. It tripped over the threshold in front of the steps and rolled halfway over. After scrambling back up, it didn't even bother shaking out its fur, just tipped its head back and cried at Wen Ning.
"Wah, I can't... can't find Mommy. Mommy's gone. Waaaah, Mommy!"
Hearing the puppy cry, Wen Ning quickly crouched down and gently wiped the tears and dirt off its face with a towel.
The puppy was crying so hard its whole body shook. Its tail was tucked beneath its belly, and its four tiny paws shuffled restlessly on the ground.
Wen Ning stroked the puppy's head and asked softly,
"What's your name, little one?"
The puppy sniffled as it answered,
"My name's Xiao Bai. Mommy said my paws were white, so she called me Xiao Bai."
Xiao Bai's stomach let out a rumbling growl as well.
