Liu Qing knew neither of the Trainers in the next match, but a man named Junya was considerably stronger than his opponent and ultimately won. The first match that afternoon was between Dushe and a girl. Anyone who reached the top eight was no pushover, of course, but she still fell a little short of Dushe. In the end, his Rhyhorn defeated her Ninetales with Take Down, securing his victory.
The final match of the second round, which was also the second match that afternoon, was between Ash and Hua Yan. Ash went first and sent out Pikachu, while Hua Yan used Dugtrio. Pikachu's Electric-type moves were completely useless against Dugtrio. First, Sand Tomb trapped Pikachu, then Tri Attack and Earthquake knocked Pikachu out.
Ash's second Pokémon was Bayleef. As a Grass-type, Bayleef had a type advantage over Dugtrio. Even trapped in Sand Tomb, Bayleef could still fight back with Razor Leaf. When Dugtrio used Dig, Bayleef pulled Dugtrio out with Vine Whip, then knocked Dugtrio out with Body Slam.
Hua Yan's second Pokémon was Aipom, presumably the same one she had used when she encountered Liu Qing. This Aipom was extremely agile, constantly leaping around the Rock Field to dodge Bayleef's Razor Leaf and Vine Whip while striking back with Swift. Finally, Aipom defeated Bayleef with the Flying-type move Aerial Ace.
Ash's third Pokémon was Totodile. Ash made clever use of Totodile's fondness for biting: when Aipom used Iron Tail, Totodile bit down on the tail and seized the opportunity to defeat Aipom.
Hua Yan's third Pokémon was Ampharos. As soon as Ampharos appeared, Thunder Wave paralyzed Totodile, followed by a Thunder that knocked Totodile out.
After a five-minute intermission, Ash sent out his fourth Pokémon, Snorlax. Snorlax was asleep upon entering the field, but a hit from Ampharos's
