Lin Chao Ci made up his mind.
He had the lyrics and music. All he needed now was someone who could sing.
The school's thirtieth anniversary celebration was coming up, and plenty of guests and radio reporters were bound to attend.
He could pick a song for his class to sing as a choir. That would promote his song and get his class out of a bind at the same time. Two birds with one stone. Perfect.
Lin Chao Ci gave it some thought and felt his scalp tingle. There were too many great songs to choose from, and he had no idea which one to pick.
His personal favorite was still the 2008 song "You and Me"! Just hearing it made his scalp tingle and goosebumps rise all over his body. It stirred the heart and filled people with pride in their motherland.
But an event on the level of a school anniversary... simply didn't deserve a song that incredible!
As for the other songs, Lin Chao Ci thought it over and casually settled on a patriotic number, "I Love the Motherland."
Once he had chosen the song, Lin Chao Ci raised his hand, intending to tell everyone about it.
"Quiet, everyone. Lin Chao Ci, is there something you'd like to say?"
Their homeroom teacher, Yu Guang, had been keeping an eye on Lin Chao Ci. After all, his background was no secret. Most people knew about it.
The moment Lin Chao Ci raised his hand, the teacher noticed. He immediately tapped the desk to quiet everyone down, then asked with a broad smile.
Lin Chao Ci nodded, stood up, and turned to his classmates. "We could do a choral performance. I know a very talented songwriter who's written a patriotic song praising our country! He's willing to let us use it..."
Lin Chao Ci kept it brief and to the point, giving them a simple rundown that everyone understood.
"I'm so jealous. Now that's a true elite heir! He's got connections everywhere, in every line of work!"
"He solved the hardest problem just like that. Any songwriter Young Master Lin knows has to be top-notch. All we'll need to do is practice singing together, and we're pretty much set..."
"But there are so many choral songs these days. Other classes are bound to choose a choir performance too. Half our class can't carry a tune, so we don't exactly have an advantage..."
Everyone envied Lin Chao Ci's connections and how many important people he knew.
Soon, however, some of his classmates realized that a choral performance might not be all that competitive.
"Don't worry, everyone. The song my friend gave me is an original and has never been posted online. You'll be the first to perform it, and I guarantee it's one of the best songs in the world!"
Lin Chao Ci knew what worried them and immediately explained.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. If what Lin Chao Ci said was true, their performance was practically a sure thing.
They all trusted Lin Chao Ci. With a background as powerful as his, someone of his standing had no reason to lie to them.
"Amazing! That's Young Master Lin for you. He doesn't make a move unless he's going to blow everyone away!"
"So all we need to do now is rehearse the song. A song only lasts three or four minutes. This just got so much easier!"
"Thanks for the help, Young Master Lin!"
Everyone was grateful for Lin Chao Ci's help. Without him, preparing for this anniversary performance would probably have worked quite a few of them "to death."
Now it was simple. They just needed to learn the song and rehearse it a few times.
Even if they couldn't sing it when the time came, they could just mouth the words.
The task had gone from hard mode to easy mode in an instant, and everyone was genuinely grateful to Lin Chao Ci.
"I'll get the song to you by tomorrow at the latest!"
Lin Chao Ci nodded, left them with that promise, and sat back down.
"All right. Thank you for your help, Lin Chao Ci! Once the song arrives, I'll have someone make copies, one for each dorm room. Make sure you memorize the lyrics..."
Their homeroom teacher also breathed a sigh of relief and laid out what they would need to do next.
The class meeting continued with discussions of a few other matters.
Lin Chao Ci listened for a little while, then stopped paying much attention, because the classroom's back door had quietly opened a crack.
A small head cautiously poked inside.
She looked left and right and soon spotted the person she was searching for. Then the gap widened, and a figure slipped furtively into the classroom.
The homeroom teacher naturally saw her from the lectern, but he said nothing.
The stealthy figure soon reached Lin Chao Ci and sat down beside him without the slightest hesitation.
"Hehehe. Morning, Brother Chao Ci!"
The newcomer was graceful and lovely, with her hair tied in a high ponytail. When she smiled, a little dimple appeared beside her mouth.
Her eyes seemed to sparkle with tiny stars as she looked at Lin Chao Ci.
It was none other than Liu Shuang'er, a freshman.
Knowing she would get to see Lin Chao Ci today, she had gone to bed early the night before. But the more she tried to sleep, the less she could.
She had overslept that morning. If the nanny hadn't come to wake her, Liu Shuang'er would have slept even longer. She quickly washed up, put on a little makeup, and rushed to school.
If she hadn't been going to see Lin Chao Ci, Liu Shuang'er probably wouldn't even have bothered with light makeup. Nobody else deserved the effort. It would only waste her cosmetics.
"Morning!"
Although they had been the closest of confidants in their previous life, trusting each other completely and even entrusting their lives to one another, things were different now.
In this life, they weren't that close yet. To keep the change from seeming too abrupt and making others suspicious, Lin Chao Ci could only adjust his attitude toward Liu Shuang'er one step at a time.
He had gone from completely ignoring her and not bothering to answer to giving her a cool nod and a word or two in reply. Only a gradual change would keep it from seeming too sudden.
Hearing Lin Chao Ci answer her, Liu Shuang'er froze for a moment. At first, she thought she had imagined it.
Before, Lin Chao Ci had barely acknowledged her. Now he was finally responding.
Liu Shuang'er felt as though the clouds had finally parted, as though her persistence had at last paid off. She was so excited she nearly cried.
She opened her mouth, hoping to take the opportunity to chat a little more, but then thought carefully about Lin Chao Ci's temper. She worried she might disturb him and make him dislike her.
In the end, Liu Shuang'er resisted the urge to speak. She quietly rested her head on the desk and gazed unwaveringly at Lin Chao Ci's profile.
The fact that Lin Chao Ci no longer seemed averse to her was enough to make Liu Shuang'er happy.
Knock, knock, knock!
Just then, a series of knocks came from the classroom doorway.
Quite a few people looked up, and their eyes lit up when they saw who it was.
"It's Li Si Han, the campus belle! Didn't she take the day off?"
"Damn, she's gorgeous. If I could marry someone like her, I'd even be willing to drive luxury cars and live in mansions every day!"
"You clown, quit joking around! Only Young Master Lin is a match for a campus belle that beautiful!"
Standing in the doorway was the aloof campus belle, tall and slender, with long legs, eyes like stars, hair as black as ink, and skin so fair it seemed to glow.
Simply standing there, she was the most beautiful painting in the world, leaving countless men gazing at her with wistful sighs, not daring to approach.
