Background / History

Xiao Bai was born with an exceptionally rare supernatural gift. Zhong Cai took him as a disciple because his profession offered a way to use that gift and address the difficulties it caused. Zhong Cai had encountered only one similarly gifted practitioner during his earlier travels 164.

Before joining the Curse Cult, Xiao Bai lived with Zhong Cai on the outskirts of Shannan City. His master brought him to investigate a suspected resentment-related haunting, both for his unusual sight and because he would otherwise have been left home alone 96.

His constitution later attracted people who wanted to exploit it. Feng Bujue sought to capture him, and Elder Bamboo abducted him for a possession ritual. Chen Miao concluded that Xiao Bai’s innate Yin-Yang Eyes held a significance neither he nor Zhong Cai had understood 239.

Appearance

  • White hair and eyebrows: His white hair is immediately recognizable to Chen Miao; his snow-white eyebrows are also noted when he is exposed as an Otherworldly Fiend 96 454 634.
  • Childlike build: He is consistently presented as a small boy, despite his later power and position in the Curse Cult 96 634 713.
  • Bandaged eyes: During an early stay with Chen Miao, his injured eyes require dressings and daily ointment. He eventually reports being able to see a little 133 134.
  • Transformed appearance: After the Five Prisons ritual, his body becomes flawless and pure white, compared to celestial porcelain, with five-colored radiance 248 249.
  • Later weight loss: On his New Year visit, Chen Miao notices that his face has become thinner and worries about his health 635.

Personality

Initially withdrawn and reluctant to speak, Xiao Bai nevertheless shows immediate goodwill toward Chen Miao. His spoken thanks for a Peachwood Talisman surprises Zhong Cai, who had just been explaining how quiet his disciple usually was 96.

His strongest motivation is devotion to Zhong Cai. He preserves his master’s spirit and body, joins the Curse Cult to obtain resurrection resources, and continues searching for ways to make Zhong Cai’s revived zombie body function like an ordinary person’s 249 470 710.

After his transformation, Xiao Bai becomes more independent and decisive. Chen Miao notices subtle changes in his personality, probably resulting from Elder Bamboo’s attempted possession, but concludes that Xiao Bai remains himself. His ruthlessness toward threats coexists with enduring affection for his master and Uncle San Shui 249 710 725.

He is cautious about both cultivation and secrecy. He declines most of Chen Miao’s offered manuals to concentrate on his existing powers, plans to test risky corpse-refining methods on a substitute body, and conceals visits that might expose Chen Miao to the Curse Cult 468 636.

Abilities & Skills

Innate Yin-Yang Eyes

  • See supernatural beings that ordinary people cannot perceive 96.
  • Help survey locations during supernatural investigations; Chen Miao suspects they may also perceive resentment, though this is not confirmed 97.
  • Identify the Six Livestock Doll responsible for a workplace brawl and alert Chen Miao to it 98.
  • Apparently recognize Chen Miao even while Xiao Bai’s eyes are covered. Aura-based recognition is Chen Miao’s hypothesis, not an established explanation 133.
  • Naturally contain yin energy, which Zhong Cai believes could give Xiao Bai a substantial cultivation advantage if controlled 169.

Yin-Yang Dharma Eye

The enhanced form of Xiao Bai’s innate eyes develops after he acquires the Five Hells Immortal Body 536.

  • Energy control: Places yin energy, vital blood, and yang energy under his control. Chen Miao regards this as a natural counter to his mist and blood-hair techniques 468.
  • Formation disruption: Streams of black and white energy from his eyes pierce the formation concealing the Southern Curse Dao School’s entrance 277.
  • Yin-energy extraction: Drains the Joyful Bodhisattva’s yin energy, weakening him for Chen Miao’s finishing attack 725.
  • Environmental manipulation: Stirs scattered mountain yin energy into a tornado to disrupt enemy perception 724.
  • Limit: The Three-Faced Black Buddha statue prevents the Dharma Eye from directly targeting the three Bodhisattvas 724.

Five Hells Immortal Body and Five Prisons Marks

Xiao Bai possesses the complete Five Hells Immortal Body, unlike the incomplete version Chen Miao initially obtains. Its complete form is associated with a major cultivation-speed advantage 251.

  • Projects the Five Prisons into other people’s bodies from a distance 347.
  • Uses supernatural cold to freeze Li Quan and nearby investigators 248.
  • Confines people in the Ice Prison, releasing Shi Manman, Li Zi, and Ji Mo at Chen Miao’s request after the mountain trial 717.
  • Uses Five Prisons Marks to engulf the Wrathful Bodhisattva in fire 725.
  • Survives Li Quan’s attacks on his coffin without injury and absorbs their force 248.
  • Limit: The Three-Faced Black Buddha statue also blocks his marks from directly targeting the Bodhisattvas 724.

The body’s name does not establish absolute invulnerability: Xiao Bai is later subjected to soul refinement and eventually overpowered and abducted 457 729.

Healing and Energy Conversion

  • Heals every wound on Chen Miao’s body in moments, restoring his yin energy and body-protecting astral energy 249.
  • Removes the yin mark that had afflicted Chen Miao for months 249.
  • Extracts blood and vitality from Li Quan and others, converting it into approximately 160 years’ worth of yang energy for Chen Miao’s Heavenly Heart Yang-Locking Art—first about sixty years, then another hundred 249.

Chen Miao suspects that the remote extraction and conversion may result from the interaction between Xiao Bai’s enhanced eyes and Immortal Body rather than the body alone 347.

Soul Preservation and Manipulation

  • Holds Zhong Cai’s spirit together with five-colored light while seeking a way to revive him 249.
  • Fuses one hundred Soul Crystal Fragments into a deep-blue soul crystal using soul power 470.
  • Transfers the portion of his Soul Body connected to Bright Moon Island’s feng shui formation to Chen Miao, granting him island-wide perception and greatly increased soul strength 459.
  • Retains powers dependent on his soul rather than a particular physical body. Chen Miao reasons that replacing Xiao Bai’s body would not eliminate his principal combat abilities 463.

Corpse Refining and Soul-Splitting

  • Preserves Zhong Cai by refining his corpse into a zombie body, buying time to restore his master’s soul 249.
  • Nurtures Zhong Cai’s eventual Flying Jiangshi body using the Extreme Yin corpse-refining inheritance 713.
  • Reworks Old Ghost’s burned mummy remains together with Three-Tail into a mummy belonging to Chen Miao, later named Scorpion Corpse 249 252.
  • Receives the Six Livestock Soul-Splitting Technique, which can produce soul imprints for controlling zombies 636.
  • Plans to test further corpse-refining changes on a substitute body in the Mortal World before risking Zhong Cai’s body 636.

Flight and Physical Defense

  • Floats to Chen Miao’s height after his transformation 249.
  • Carries Shi Manman between the funeral home and Twin Ridge Mountain by flight, including a spiraling tour around the mountain 717.
  • Disperses Chen Miao’s binding hair and redirects hundreds of incoming blood darts during his unannounced visit 468.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Peachwood Talisman — Given by Chen Miao at their first meeting; Xiao Bai holds it while surveying the escape room 96 97.
  • Seven-Star Peach Wood Sword — Lent to him to hold while staying in Chen Miao’s office; he finds comfort in it during his eye injury 134.
  • Yin-Dispelling Talisman — Another protective gift from Chen Miao 169.
  • Soul Crystal — Fused from one hundred fragments after Chen Miao supplies ninety-nine. Xiao Bai explains that awakening Zhong Cai requires one hundred fragments, with another hundred needed to bring the completed crystal out of the Mortal World 470.
  • Premium Mind-Clearing Talismans — Accepts a few before departing after New Year’s gift exchange, declining other talismans that would probably be quickly consumed within the Cult 636.

Relationships

  • Zhong Cai — Master and father-like figure. Zhong Cai dies protecting him; Xiao Bai devotes himself to restoring his soul and preserving his body. After Zhong Cai awakens, Xiao Bai continues seeking a cure for his zombie limitations 247 249 470 710.
  • Chen Miao / Uncle San Shui — Protector, mentor, and uncle-like family member. Chen Miao cares for him as a child, rescues him, supplies resurrection resources, and teaches him powerful arts. Xiao Bai reciprocates with healing, gifts, intelligence, and unwavering trust 134 249 459 470 636 717.
  • Li Fu — One of the few funeral-home staff members Xiao Bai readily grows close to. Xiao Bai explains his preference by saying that Li Fu feels “warm” 135.
  • Old Yu — A familiar elder at the funeral home who warmly welcomes him home after his long absence 173 712.
  • Shi Manman — Chen Miao’s disciple, addressed as Xiao Bai’s “Sister Manman.” Xiao Bai flies her to collect tools for treating Zhong Cai and takes her on an enjoyable aerial tour 717 718.
  • Star Lord Rank Controller — Senior Southern Curse Dao School ally. Helps retrieve Xiao Bai and his shrine after the Bright Moon Island rescue, then fights alongside him against the Curse Buddha who abducts him 468 729.
  • Elder Bamboo / Wang Yongfu — Captor who attempts to devour Xiao Bai’s soul and occupy his body. The failed possession appears to leave Xiao Bai with additional memories and subtle personality changes 242 247 249.
  • Lin Yan — Mortal World enemy who burns and refines Xiao Bai’s soul through thirty-six Flying Jiangshi to advance his own cultivation 457.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Escape-Room Investigation

Xiao Bai first meets Chen Miao while accompanying Zhong Cai to investigate the escape room. His quiet intervention becomes decisive when the Six Livestock Doll amplifies everyone’s anger: he takes Chen Miao’s hand, prompting him to recognize his altered emotional state, then points out the doll 96 98.

Staying at Tianmen Funeral Home

With his eyes injured and Zhong Cai preparing to leave, Xiao Bai stays under Chen Miao’s care. Chen Miao arranges bedding, medicine, walks, and introductions to the staff; Xiao Bai’s trust changes his previously negative view of children 133 134.

When a Flying Jiangshi threatens the funeral home, Chen Miao places him in Administration daycare for protection. Before entering, Xiao Bai asks him to help find his missing master 138.

Elder Bamboo’s Ritual

Elder Bamboo embeds Six Livestock soul marks in Xiao Bai to connect their souls and make possession possible. The Five Prisons ritual torments and weakens Xiao Bai’s soul before its diagram enters him 242 246 247.

Chen Miao cuts out the six marks, but Elder Bamboo still merges with Xiao Bai. Zhong Cai intercepts Chen Miao’s desperate dagger strike, sacrificing himself to save his disciple. Chen Miao then expends all his remaining yin virtue on 244 Jiangzhen Incense sticks and uses Demon Suppression against Elder Bamboo inside Xiao Bai’s coffin 247 248.

Xiao Bai emerges transformed, kills Old Ghost, and freezes the investigators. His first request afterward is to learn corpse refining—not to harm Zhong Cai, but to preserve him until resurrection becomes possible 248 249.

Joining the Curse Cult

Xiao Bai leaves to claim the position of Star Lord of Ascending Life, seeking access to the Mortal World and resources for Zhong Cai’s revival. He later demonstrates his authority by exposing the Southern Curse Dao School’s concealed entrance, forcing his guide to abandon plans to test him 249 277.

His rare combination of powers makes him exceptionally useful to the Southern School. Rival branches eventually demand to “borrow” him for their own expansion, but his school refuses, fearing it would not get him back 635 717.

Bright Moon Island Rescue

To obtain resurrection materials, Xiao Bai stays with the Lin Family and helps them produce Flying Jiangshi. His identity is exposed through the Soul-Inquiry Hall, and he is publicly revealed as an Otherworldly Fiend 454 468 469.

Lin Yan refines his soul for cultivation gains until Chen Miao intervenes. Xiao Bai trusts Uncle San Shui’s voice, cooperates in transferring his connection to the island’s formation, and is compressed into a Soul Ball for evacuation 457 459.

Chen Miao places him inside the Five Prisons Common-Faced God Shrine in Qingjiang Town. The Southern School’s Star Lords later retrieve both Xiao Bai and the shrine 463 468.

Restoring Zhong Cai

Chen Miao’s Soul Crystal Fragments allow Xiao Bai to complete the crystal needed to awaken Zhong Cai. Xiao Bai initially estimates six months to a year; at his later New Year visit, he reports that his master should awaken in about two months 470 635.

By their return to Tianmen County, Zhong Cai is awake in a Flying Jiangshi body. Xiao Bai brings him to reunite with Chen Miao and the funeral-home elders, then helps arrange further treatment through Shi Manman’s corpse-sewing expertise 710 712 713 717.

Curse Buddha Pursuit and Abduction

Three Bodhisattvas attack Twin Ridge Mountain with a statue that counters Xiao Bai’s strongest abilities. He adapts by disrupting their perception and supporting Chen Miao; after the statue is broken, his energy extraction and Five Prisons Marks help defeat them 724 725.

Xiao Bai and Zhong Cai leave for the Southern School’s base to avoid exposing Chen Miao and the others to further attacks. Their departure does not end the pursuit: a Curse Buddha later overpowers Xiao Bai, Zhong Cai, and Rank Controller, abducting Xiao Bai while the other two chase him into the mountains 725 727 729.
