At eight that evening, a disguised Lu Xiaoxiao stood outside the entrance to the Phantom Club.
She had deliberately put on heavy smoky makeup and curled her hair. She wore a rather sexy black dress with a hem that fell above her knees, paired with eight-centimeter stiletto heels.
After this total makeover, she figured even her own mother might not recognize her at first glance.
The system's reminder rang in her ears. "Host, you'll need to find a way to get Lu Jiaoyue away from the crowd later. Gu Sipei has a gathering here tonight. Those two didn't get a chance to spend time alone at the family reunion banquet, so you must make sure they meet this time."
Lu Xiaoxiao impatiently picked at her ear. "I heard you, I heard you. Both ears heard you."
Her timing was perfect. Lu Yubai's birthday party had only started a few minutes ago, but almost everyone would have arrived by now. It would be at its liveliest.
Slipping in now would give Lu Xiaoxiao the best chance of going unnoticed.
"So which private room did Lu Yubai book?" she asked.
The system replied, "The large private room A5, on the club's fifth floor."
Lu Xiaoxiao nodded and headed straight into the elevator.
As luck would have it, she spotted a familiar face the moment she stepped inside: Gu Sipei.
The man was checking his wristwatch, looking as though he was on his way to meet someone. He still radiated an air that warned strangers to keep their distance.
Lu Xiaoxiao knew Gu Sipei, but he didn't know her, so he paid her no attention.
Lu Xiaoxiao made no deliberate attempt to attract his attention either. She simply watched the numbers on the elevator display climb.
They soon reached the fifth floor. As Lu Xiaoxiao stepped out, she noticed that Gu Sipei hadn't followed her and was continuing upward instead. This isn't good.
They might be in the same building, but Lu Jiaoyue and Gu Sipei were on different floors. She had no idea how to make sure they crossed paths.
Feeling a little troubled, Lu Xiaoxiao first asked a nearby staff member about the floor above.
The staff member told her that the Phantom Club had only six floors in total, and not just anyone could go up to the sixth. It mainly housed VIP rooms and guest rooms, which were generally booked in advance by big shots or reserved for their long-term exclusive use.
For someone of Gu Sipei's status, going to the sixth floor was only natural.
Aside from visiting VIPs, however, there was one special circumstance in which the staff would take guests upstairs: if someone suddenly felt unwell, they would escort them to a room to rest.
At the staff member's explanation, Lu Xiaoxiao's eyes darted as an idea came to her.
In that case, wouldn't I just need to make Lu Jiaoyue seem unwell?
The method was simple, too. She only needed to exchange for some drug from the system that would make someone dizzy and feverish, then slip it into Lu Jiaoyue's drink when no one was looking.
It sounded a little immoral, but she was the villainous supporting character, after all. It couldn't have fit her role better.
Besides, it was all for the wonderful romance between the male and female leads, all for her beautiful dream of getting home safely!
Lu Xiaoxiao kept feeding herself those thoughts and soon managed to convince herself.
She pushed open the door to private room A5 and handed her gift to the person at the entrance, claiming to be a classmate in Lu Yubai's year.
The person at the door didn't question her closely. They accepted the gift and let Lu Xiaoxiao inside.
Quite a few people had come to Lu Yubai's birthday party. Looking around, she estimated there were two or three hundred people, including the staff.
Light and shadows shifted all around her as multicolored lights flashed incessantly. The music was deafening, making Lu Xiaoxiao's ears hurt.
Lu Xiaoxiao inwardly lamented that she really wasn't young anymore. Before transmigrating into the novel, she had spent years as a corporate drudge. Every day, she opened her eyes only to clock in for work, and on her days off, she was often so exhausted that she slept the whole day away. She wasn't really used to this kind of party atmosphere anymore.
Still, a lively crowd had its advantages. Her little trick later wouldn't attract much attention.
Lu Xiaoxiao threaded through the crowd, searching everywhere for Lu Jiaoyue.
Along the way, a few young guys tried chatting her up, but Lu Xiaoxiao politely turned every one of them down.
It went something like this:
"Hey, gorgeous, here alone? Want to have a drink together?"
"No, thanks. I'm allergic to alcohol."
"Hey, junior, I'd like to get to know you. Can I add you on WeChat?"
"I'm not your junior. I repeated three years, and I'm twenty now."
"Hi, do you believe in love at first sight? I think I'm already drawn to you."
"Thanks, but I'll pass-I'm a lesbian!"
Lu Xiaoxiao kept walking, tossing out random replies to everyone who approached her, until she finally spotted Lu Jiaoyue at the bar farther inside the room.
Lu Jiaoyue was wearing the dress Lu Xiaoxiao had helped her pick out last time. Its design was simple yet refined, making it obvious at a glance that she came from a well-off family.
She wasn't sitting alone. Another girl, whom Lu Xiaoxiao didn't recognize, sat beside her and was chatting with her.
"Do you know what Lu Yubai usually likes?"
The girl sounded a little shy as she spoke. It wasn't hard to tell that she was quite taken with Lu Yubai.
Seriously? Someone actually likes that idiot Lu Yubai? Okay, his face is pretty decent, but his personality is ridiculously unreliable. This girl must really be desperate.
When Lu Jiaoyue heard Lu Xiaoxiao's thoughts, she froze for a moment before delight washed over her, and she immediately began looking around.
When Lu Yubai had brought her out, Lu Jiaoyue had asked whether her older sister would be coming later. Afraid she would refuse to go if she heard he hadn't invited Lu Xiaoxiao, Lu Yubai had lied and said that Lu Xiaoxiao had something to do and would come a little later.
After arriving, Lu Jiaoyue had waited and waited, but her sister never appeared.
She wasn't very comfortable in this kind of party atmosphere either, and she didn't know any of the people around her. At first, Lu Yubai had been able to look after her, but with so many guests to greet, he had little energy left to spare for Lu Jiaoyue once the party was in full swing.
Lu Jiaoyue didn't want to spoil his fun, either. It was his birthday, and she wanted him to enjoy himself.
So Lu Jiaoyue told Lu Yubai not to worry about her, found a somewhat quieter corner, and ordered a glass of juice.
Not long after she sat down, a girl named Qi Yin came over to talk to her. They exchanged polite introductions, but after only a few words, she suddenly steered the conversation toward Lu Yubai.
Lu Jiaoyue was rather slow on the uptake when it came to romance and had thought it was just ordinary concern. Only after hearing Lu Xiaoxiao's thoughts did she realize that the girl liked Lu Yubai.
But more than she was surprised by that revelation, Lu Jiaoyue wanted to find her sister as soon as possible.
She didn't know why, but whenever her sister was around, she felt at ease. Once they found each other, she would have someone to talk to, too.
