Because the view was good there.
Quite a few people were sitting on the grass or benches in the park.
Most were pairs of a man and a woman, probably couples. Looking around, they seemed to be the only two men together, which made things feel a little awkward.
Bai Chen rubbed the bridge of his nose awkwardly. The cold wind against his face instantly made him feel much more awake.
Gu Yun suddenly said, "Tonight is the Geminid Meteor Shower. It happens around December 13 to 14 every year, and at its peak, there can be as many as 120 meteors an hour."
Bai Chen had never learned anything about meteor showers, nor had he ever seen one, so all he could do was listen to Gu Yun's encyclopedia of facts.
It was pretty interesting.
Things like how meteor showers formed, and which ones appeared at which times of the year.
Gu Yun described a few, and Bai Chen carefully committed them all to memory:
The Leonid meteor shower occurred around November 14 to 21 every year.
The Perseid meteor shower appeared every year between July 17 and August 24.
There were also the Orionid meteor shower, the Taurid meteor shower, the Draconid meteor shower, and the Lyrid meteor shower.
So throughout the year, as long as you worked out the right time and the weather was good, you could see every one of them.
But the Geminid Meteor Shower could only be seen once every few decades.
Bai Chen knew that when a meteor fell, it was the best time to make a wish.
Wishes made then were the most likely to come true, though he had no idea whether that was true.
Gu Yun had talked about meteor showers, but there was one thing he hadn't told Bai Chen.
According to legend, each meteor represented a person's destiny.
A falling meteor was actually a tear shed by an angel.
If you could catch that instant when a meteor streaked across the sky...
And make a wish, God would help you fulfill it. It was also something many couples did together.
He had only heard that from Li Xingzhu today.
Earlier that day, after Gu Cheng's ridiculous behavior had angered him, he had wanted to leave campus to clear his head. Unexpectedly, he had run into Li Xingzhu not far from the gate.
Li Xingzhu was his childhood friend. Their mothers had been classmates, so the two had grown up together and gone to school together throughout elementary and middle school.
When they reached high school, Li Xingzhu's grades weren't very good, so he and Gu Yun had gone to different schools.
Gu Yun had gone to the best high school in their city, while Li Xingzhu had barely managed to get into No. 2 High School.
After that, Gu Yun could only go home once a week, on weekends. Li Xingzhu was always nowhere to be found, and Gu Yun had no idea what he was up to, so they had gradually drifted apart.
The strange thing was that he had no idea why Li Xingzhu had suddenly appeared here.
Gu Yun hadn't asked, either.
They had gone out for a meal together, and Li Xingzhu had happened to mention that there would be a once-in-a-century meteor shower tonight. After checking the time, Gu Yun had hurried back to the dorm.
Fortunately, Bai Chen hadn't gone to sleep yet.
He wanted to watch this rare sight with Bai Chen.
It was eleven at night now, with about an hour left before the meteor shower began.
Bai Chen pulled up the neck of his turtleneck, feeling a little drowsy from the cold wind.
His hands were red from the cold, and he rubbed them together to try to warm them up.
He hadn't expected such a big difference between the daytime and nighttime temperatures.
His faith had been misplaced after all.
Seeing this, Gu Yun tried to take off his scarf and put it around Bai Chen.
Bai Chen could tell what he intended. He waved a hand and declined. "It's fine. You aren't wearing much either, and I'm not that delicate."
How could he dare accept the male lead's scarf? Besides, it was pretty strange for this sort of scene to happen to a guy like him.
Usually, it seemed to be something that happened between couples: one person was cold, so the other took off their own scarf and personally wrapped it around them.
Then the first snow of the season would fall, and as the snowflakes came down, the two would look into each other's eyes and confess their feelings. Everything would be so romantic, and it would all feel so natural.
Gu Yun's hands paused slightly. He looked a little disappointed, but he stopped taking off his scarf.
Gu Yun's scarf was black, making his face look even fairer and more exquisite.
He was like a noble, elegant little prince whom no one dared defile.
Bai Chen finally understood the beauty of fictional characters that his younger sister was always talking about.
It was a breathtaking beauty he had never seen in his own world.
Truly beautiful.
So beautiful.
How could a boy be this beautiful?
But before the meteors arrived, a ringing phone shattered this rare moment of peace.
Gu Yun glanced at his phone's screen and quickly answered. The person on the other end kept talking nonstop, and Gu Yun's expression grew increasingly serious.
"Okay, I'll go to the hospital right now. Have you called the police?" Gu Yun sounded a little anxious.
After hanging up, he turned toward Bai Chen, looking a little dejected.
Gu Yun said, "I'm sorry, Xiao Bai. A friend of mine ended up in the hospital because of me. I have to go over there right now to deal with it, so I can't watch the meteor shower with you tonight."
His expression was like that of a puppy who had done something wrong, desperately hoping his owner wouldn't get angry.
Of course Bai Chen wasn't angry. It wasn't a big deal, after all. Besides, it had to be his childhood friend, Li Xingzhu, who was in trouble.
He couldn't delay that. This was just the thing to bring them closer.
"It's fine, it's fine. Go to the hospital. I'll wait here. Since I'm already here, it'd be a shame not to see the meteor shower. I'll head back to campus myself afterward. I can take pictures for you," Bai Chen said casually.
It would be a shame for this ethereal beauty to miss a once-in-a-century meteor shower, too.
Bai Chen had never seen a meteor shower either, and he was pretty curious.
Hearing that, Gu Yun felt he was being a little unfair. After all, he was the one who had dragged Bai Chen out to see the meteor shower, only to leave halfway through. That was really going too far.
But he had no choice but to leave.
After thinking it over, he came up with the best solution: he would watch another one with Xiao Bai someday.
There was plenty of time ahead, anyway.
They still had so much time and so many opportunities.
But what Gu Yun didn't know was that today's decision would make him and Bai Chen drift further and further apart.
There was still time, but...
The opportunity was already gone.
Gu Yun nodded, gathered his things, and left, reminding Bai Chen to be careful on his way back before he went.
Bai Chen promised him, one thing after another, feeling a little amused. He wasn't some great beauty, and he was a man. What was there to worry about?
After Gu Yun left, Bai Chen planned to wait in the park until the meteor shower arrived before leaving.
He waited all the way until half past twelve, but there was still nothing, and the temperature kept dropping.
Eventually, Bai Chen couldn't stand the cold anymore, so he picked up his backpack and left.
It was a bit of a shame that he wouldn't get to see the once-in-a-century Geminid Meteor Shower.
A shame, a shame...
Such a shame.
Many couples had already left the park. They probably thought the wait was hopeless, too.
One in the morning.
Bai Chen could smell the wontons the old man was selling by the roadside from far away.
After waiting so long, Bai Chen was a little hungry too, so he went over and bought two portions.
One for himself, and one for Gu Yun.
Gu Yun would probably be hungry when he got back later.
Carrying the two portions of wontons, he took out his phone at the intersection to call a cab.
