He hadn't said that Gu Yun would find a boyfriend tonight, afraid Gu Cheng would beat him up.
At those words, Gu Yun's expression visibly darkened.
"A dance? Oh, right, I almost forgot."
Bai Chen had almost forgotten that this was a Mary Sue world. A dance for meeting people was perfectly normal here.
The university he'd attended before had never held anything like that.
At most, everyone would gather to hear speeches from the president and a few administrators, followed by older students dancing, singing, or performing skits onstage.
They'd never had such a fancy event.
Bai Chen had actually been at this university for a month, yet he still hadn't explored the entire campus. That alone showed how enormous it was.
He only went back and forth within his own campus section and had never visited the others.
One section of this university was as big as three campuses of his old university.
"Do we have to go?" Bai Chen asked.
Bai Chen figured he couldn't dance anyway. He'd just stand around if he went, so he might as well stay in his dorm. He still had an assignment to finish.
If he didn't finish tonight, he'd have to stay up late tomorrow to rush through it. He also needed to buy medicine later. With so much to do, where would he find time for a dance?
"Huh? You're not going? There'll be plenty of pretty upperclasswomen and cute petite girls." Lin Sen couldn't believe Bai Chen would pass up such a great opportunity. He was a bit too much of a homebody.
Bai Chen was probably the biggest homebody in their dorm. Apart from weekends, he was either in the dorm or attending class, following the same routine every day.
Although Lin Sen didn't know Gu Yun very well, he knew Gu Yun had joined plenty of clubs and had a busy campus life.
Gu Cheng went without saying. As the heir to the Gu Family, he was surely either studying here or heading somewhere else to discuss business every day.
Recently, Lin Sen had also heard his father mention that the Gu Family and the Lin family were competing for a bid.
The two corporations were evenly matched, and the bids would be opened in a few days.
Either side could win. After all, Lin Jingchen of the Lin family was no pushover. He'd never lost a bid he'd been involved in.
Lin Sen had accompanied his father to an event last time.
Lin Jingchen had given a speech onstage. Lin Sen had still been in high school then, and although he hadn't understood it, he'd understood just how impressive the man was.
He'd also happened to rank near the bottom on an exam that day. His father had sat there sighing about how they were both named Lin, yet the difference between them was so great. He'd even docked Lin Sen's allowance for a month.
The university had actually invited Lin Jingchen to tonight's dance. It really was a return to that nightmare of a day.
Every freshman really did have to attend this dance.
Lin Sen shrugged and answered, "I don't think you can skip it. The administrators said everyone has to go. They're worried some students will sneak off because it's a holiday."
Hearing that, Bai Chen had no choice.
"Sigh... fine, I'll go. There should be a food area. I'll just sit there and eat something." Bai Chen had made his plans.
He guessed the best-looking guys from every campus section and department would show up at this dance.
The campus F4, for short. Or maybe F5, F6...
Last time, he'd seen a few of Gu Cheng's handsome buddies. They all drove flashy luxury sports cars and barely acknowledged the fangirls beside them.
The more flirtatious one even blew a few kisses and winked, leaving the fangirls utterly smitten.
It took Bai Chen right back to his middle school years, when he'd watched idol dramas with Bai Xi.
Barring any surprises, those guys surely dominated the top spots on the campus confession board.
They probably hadn't met Gu Yun yet. Once they met him tonight, another melodramatic scene was bound to unfold, perhaps with Gu Yun getting into some sort of trouble.
Bai Chen didn't know exactly what kind of trouble, but it would be one of the usual scenarios.
Someone would force him to drink, accidentally bump into him and spill alcohol all over him, or play a prank on him. A thug might even show up and threaten him into spending the night with him.
Then a handsome man would appear to rescue him, a particularly gentle one at that.
Bai Chen could more or less predict all of that. It wasn't his business anyway. At most, he'd give Gu Yun a warning. He thought a gentle supporting male lead sounded pretty good, too.
"Are there any requirements for going?" Bai Chen asked.
Lin Sen said, "It's best to wear formal clothes. We're going to ask girls to dance, after all. They'll be all dressed up, so we should show them some respect and look presentable, too. It'll improve our chances."
"That makes sense. I'll look through my suitcase in a bit," Bai Chen replied.
There should be something in the original owner's luggage. He hadn't used anything in the suitcase. It all belonged to the original owner, and using it didn't feel right.
He'd bought his own inexpensive clothes instead.
This time, though, he'd have to borrow something. He couldn't afford a suit at present. Afterward, he'd take it to the dry cleaner and put it away properly.
After a moment's thought, Lin Sen asked, "Bai Chen, Gu Yun, if you haven't brought suits, I packed a few extra. I can lend you some."
He'd actually observed his three roommates and felt that Gu Yun and Bai Chen didn't seem to come from well-off families.
Bai Chen in particular was incredibly frugal.
Gu Yun replied, "No, thank you. I'm not attending the dance. I'm volunteering today."
"Oh, okay." Lin Sen looked at Bai Chen, waiting to hear what he thought.
But Bai Chen politely declined as well, saying he'd check his own suitcase first.
With that, Bai Chen stopped lounging on his bed and quickly climbed down.
He effortlessly brought the large suitcase down and set it on the floor.
He opened the zipper.
Who could have guessed that in the next instant...
Everything inside burst out, clothes scattered here and there in a complete mess.
Bai Chen: ...
Gu Yun: ...
Lin Sen: ...
Bai Chen stared blankly at the luggage before him. He wasn't a neat freak, but the original owner's suitcase was far too messy.
Not a single piece of clothing had been folded. Everything had been scrunched into balls and forcibly stuffed inside. That poor suitcase had really suffered.
More importantly, Lin Sen and Gu Yun were both staring at him appraisingly from behind.
They were left speechless for several seconds.
Nothing was worse than the air suddenly falling silent.
Bai Chen was so embarrassed that he couldn't speak either.
To break the awkward silence, Lin Sen gave a couple of dry laughs and joked, "That's a pretty artistic arrangement you've got there. Don't you agree, Gu Yun?" He gave Gu Yun a meaningful look.
Gu Yun was still stunned and hadn't recovered. At those words, he nodded furiously and said, "Yeah, very artistic."
They hadn't expected Bai Chen's bed and desk to be so tidy while his suitcase looked like this. They were polar opposites.
Bai Chen knew they were giving him a way out. Since they'd offered one, he'd take it. "Hehe, pretty, isn't it?"
"Pretty. Very pretty," they praised in unison.
Bai Chen: ...
"All right, stop holding it in. Laugh if you want." Bai Chen glanced at them.
They could at least have made their act convincing.
At that, Lin Sen and Gu Yun couldn't hold back anymore and burst out laughing.
"Hahaha!"
"Hey, Bai Chen, how did you manage this? It's completely unlike your usual style." Lin Sen reined in his laughter and patted Bai Chen's shoulder as he asked.
"I was in a rush the day I came to university, so I didn't organize it," Bai Chen said, coming up with an excuse.
Lin Sen spotted a black helmet bearing a name on the right side of the suitcase. Unable to quite believe it, he blinked and leaned closer for another careful look.
The next moment, his eyes widened like saucers, and he smacked the bewildered Bai Chen hard.
"You... you, how do you have this?!" Lin Sen's voice trembled as he pointed at the helmet before them.
Bai Chen: ???
He looked in the direction Lin Sen was pointing.
The helmet was large, and Bai Chen spotted it at once.
"A racing helmet?" Bai Chen was puzzled. Wasn't it just a helmet? What was so special about it?
He'd thought the original owner had left him another surprise, such as some cute little animal. Thankfully, that wasn't the case.
"This... this is the helmet I've wanted most! Never mind how expensive it is, the signature on it alone is worth a fortune. This is the helmet Cool always wore in his races!" Lin Sen leaned closer and examined it again.
"This is one of a kind. You can't buy it with money. It belongs exclusively to Cool! I was wondering why he'd changed helmets at his last race. So it was here with you!!" Lin Sen grew more excited as he spoke.
"Oh, so it's that valuable." Bai Chen genuinely hadn't known. He'd never opened the original owner's suitcase, and he didn't know this Cool whom Lin Sen was talking about.
But Bai Chen certainly couldn't reveal that he wasn't the original owner. If the original owner had carried this around, he must have been a devoted fan of the helmet's owner. Bai Chen would have to look him up on Baidu later.
Pretending he knew who the man was, Bai Chen nodded and said, "Yeah, I really like him. He's an amazing racer. He's my idol."
It was so awkward pretending to know something he didn't, but he had no choice.
"Right? Right? I love him, too! I've watched every one of his races, but all I've managed to get is one autograph. It's nowhere near as valuable as your helmet." Lin Sen sighed softly. He was so envious of Bai Chen.
"By the way, how did you get it? Cool really treasured this helmet. It was with him for every race." Lin Sen felt he wouldn't figure it out even if he drank cola all night.
Bai Chen: ...
"It's a secret. Can I not say?" Bai Chen pretended he had something he couldn't bring himself to reveal.
Of course, Lin Sen wouldn't force him. "Of course. If you don't want to say, you don't have to."
Gu Yun stood beside them, listening to their conversation. Although he didn't follow celebrities, he knew who Cool was.
Cool had dominated the youth division from his very first race at sixteen. After reaching adulthood, he'd gone on to dominate the adult division as well.
He appeared in every issue of the sports magazines.
