Gu Cheng cautiously approached Xiao Muling and asked, "Mom, what on earth happened?"
Afraid her son would see her disheveled state, Xiao Muling rubbed her eyes hard with her arm.
She slowly stood up.
Composing herself, she turned to Gu Cheng and forced a smile. "Cheng, I'm fine. How about I make you another bowl of noodles in a little while?"
"I'll make your favorite Yangchun Noodles." Xiao Muling stroked his head.
"Okay. I'll help you." Seeing his mother like this made Gu Cheng's heart ache.
"Mom, if you really can't take it anymore, just divorce him." After some thought, Gu Cheng voiced what was on his mind. "I'll go back to the Xiao Family with you."
He could no longer bear to see that man treat his mother this way.
Ever since Gu Cheng was born, the man had always been cold toward him, never behaving like other people's fathers.
He had thought it was because his father was busy. Only today had he learned the real reason.
Xiao Muling gave his head a light pat. "Silly boy, don't say things like that again. Everything the Gu Family has belongs to you. I fought to get it for you, so you have to make something of yourself."
Gu Cheng didn't want anything from the Gu Family. Ever since childhood, he had been forced to do things he had never liked.
Even in college, he had studied something he didn't want to. His mother had arranged everything for him.
But he also knew that his mother had sacrificed her entire life to secure all of this for him.
So no matter what, he had to inherit the Gu Family.
Only when he became the head of the family would his father be unable to hurt his mother.
"Okay, Mom. I'll work hard." Gu Cheng held his anger in.
He walked steadily over to the sofa and picked up the documents his father had left behind.
After one look, he furiously hurled the documents to the floor.
"Who? Who's targeting me?!" Gu Cheng was beside himself with rage. After thinking for a moment, something occurred to him. "Lin Jingchen?! Yes! It's Lin Jingchen. He's the only one who'd dare do this."
Lin Jingchen was driving him into a dead end, pressing him at every turn without giving him a chance to breathe.
Seething with hatred, he wanted to go straight to the Lin Family and demand an explanation from Lin Jingchen. He even forgot to take his phone.
He went straight to the garage, took the fastest sports car, and sped to the Lin Family Ancestral Home.
The butler at the gate stopped him and asked, "Young Master Gu, who are you here to see? I'll need to announce your arrival before I can let you in."
Gu Cheng spoke viciously to the butler, his tone hostile. "Tell Lin Jingchen to come out! I want to ask him why he screwed me over like this. What a scumbag."
The butler remained unmoved. He knew this troublemaker's temper well.
His reputation outside was terrible, too. He was hotheaded and rude. Letting him in would likely upset Mr. Lin.
After all, no one from the Gu Family was welcome here.
He bowed and said, "I'm sorry, Young Master Gu. If you've come to the Lin Family to cause trouble for Mr. Lin, please leave. You aren't welcome here unless Mr. Lin says otherwise."
The butler had watched Lin Jingchen grow up, and he knew the Gu Family had been involved in the old patriarch's death.
Naturally, he loathed the Gu Family.
Gu Cheng refused to accept that and tried to force his way in.
The nearby security guards joined forces to stop him.
Unfortunately, he was strong, and it took them quite a while to subdue him.
Gu Cheng kicked and cursed. "Lin Jingchen, get the fuck out here! If you've got the guts, come the fuck out! What kind of man hides inside like a coward?!"
The butler wanted to call the police and report his attempted trespassing, so they could take him away and lock him up for ten days or a fortnight.
Before he could make the call, his phone rang.
"Yes, Mr. Lin. Of course. I'll bring him in right away. Should we keep him tied up?"
"Oh, all right. We'll untie him now."
After hanging up, the butler looked at the tightly bound Gu Cheng and waved to the security guards.
"Let him go," he told them. "Keep an eye on him as he goes in. Whatever you do, don't let him hurt Mr. Lin. I'll call the Gu Family to come take him home."
"You'd better behave, or we'll call the police. I imagine you wouldn't want your father picking you up from the station." The butler cast Gu Cheng a sidelong glance.
Gu Cheng turned his head away disdainfully. "Well? Untie me."
The Lin Family Main Residence had been passed down through several generations.
Lin Jingchen only came back for a short stay on weekends. The rest of the time, he lived in his detached villa in the city.
The Lin Family Main Residence was built in a courtyard style.
There was also a pond in the courtyard, with a plank bridge spanning its banks.
It lent the place an even more tranquil, elegant air.
Inside the ancestral home stood a pavilion, with a set of stone seats and stools in its center.
Lin Jingchen had already changed out of his suit into casual loungewear and sat in the middle, savoring his tea.
The peaceful atmosphere was shattered by Gu Cheng's arrival.
Gu Cheng strode over, bristling with aggression.
He tried to charge forward, but the security guards restrained him.
"Lin Jingchen, you're a bastard your mother gave birth to but never raised. You used such filthy tricks to screw me over." Gu Cheng was so furious he felt as though his back teeth might shatter from clenching them.
Lin Jingchen continued savoring his tea, completely unruffled by those words.
Only after Gu Cheng stopped cursing did he slowly speak, his voice cold. "Young Master Gu, you really do resemble Mr. Gu. Even your tempers are alike. Do you know why you lost?"
Gu Cheng shouted, "I didn't lose! If you hadn't played dirty, I would've won this bid!"
He would never admit that he was no match for Lin Jingchen.
Lin Jingchen slowly set down his teacup, stepped out of the pavilion, and stopped a few meters away from Gu Cheng.
He lowered his eyes, looking down at the man on the ground.
With a soft chuckle, he said, "Even without those little tricks, even if I'd played fair, you still wouldn't have won this bid."
"Because you will never beat me."
Then he sighed. "I hadn't intended to go after you, but you just had to hurt someone I care about."
"Tell me, how could I let you off after that?" An inscrutable smile curved Lin Jingchen's lips.
Though he was smiling, Gu Cheng felt as if the blood in his veins had frozen.
It felt as though Lin Jingchen might do anything in the next moment.
"W-who... was it?" Gu Cheng's lips trembled so badly he could barely get the words out.
