Mount Myōboku Sage Mode — first documented use 171 173 Enters Sage Mode during Konoha's invasion. With Fukasaku and Shima supporting him, gains the advantage against Orochimaru and Rasa. The acquisition of this form is not shown.
Stable, controllable Sage Mode — later description 282 Orochimaru describes his trained Sage Mode as a state of “perfect fusion” that preserves lucidity, making him valuable for artificial-senjutsu research. No intervening breakthrough is documented; an earlier account describes frog-like imperfections and reliance on the elder toads 230.

Background / History

Jiraiya trained under Hiruzen Sarutobi and grew up alongside Orochimaru and Tsunade. His relationship with Orochimaru developed from childhood dislike into a close brotherly bond, despite their later conflicts. Minato Namikaze became his student, and Jiraiya spent years searching for the “Child of Prophecy” foretold by the Great Toad Sage 169 171 217 397.

During his time in the Land of Rain, he taught Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato to survive, protect one another, and pursue peace. After leaving, he continued seeking news of them. When information became scarce following upheaval in the country, he eventually received reports that all three had died and believed he had lost them 345.

Decades of travel gave him extensive regional knowledge and intelligence contacts. His absence from Konoha also became a source of guilt: he was not present during the Nine-Tails attack that killed Minato and Kushina, and he missed Naruto's childhood. Orochimaru later confronts him publicly over these failures 171 193 217.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall and imposing, with a rugged face 393 397.
  • Hair: Wild, distinctive white hair 153 239 393.
  • Clothing: A red coat and wooden sandals during his journey to the Land of Demons 393.
  • Accessories: A forehead protector and an enormous scroll carried on his back 239 393.
  • Sage Mode features: Horizontal pupils and frog-like physical traits associated with imperfect mastery 175 230.

Personality

Jiraiya is boisterous, theatrical, and openly lecherous. His first depicted encounter with Naruto and Sakura follows his being caught peeping on women; his remorse disappears almost immediately once he thinks they have left. He later hides his desire for Naruto's acceptance behind swagger, even while dreaming of being respectfully acknowledged as the boy's master 111 153 154.

His frivolity gives way to urgency when others are endangered. On discovering Konoha under attack, he abandons his playful preparations and summons Gamabunta to intervene. During the fighting, his regret over previous absences becomes a willingness to die rather than let the village fall 169 175.

Beneath his cheerful manner, Jiraiya believes he repeatedly failed the people closest to him. He rejects a replacement youthful body, preferring to keep his own scarred body and accept its natural end. Rather than restart his life, he resolves to stop running away and serve responsibly as Hokage 217.

His generosity can override personal disappointment. Although Dan Katō was his rival for Tsunade's affection, Jiraiya helps stabilize Dan's situation and freely gives him valuable techniques. He continues to love Tsunade, while recognizing that his strongest attachment is to the young woman preserved in his memories 397.

Abilities & Skills

Sage Mode

Jiraiya uses Mount Myōboku's senjutsu, combining natural energy with his chakra 173.

  • Enhances strength, speed, perception, and ninjutsu power 173.
  • Fukasaku and Shima perch on his shoulders, supply natural energy, and cooperate in sage arts 173.
  • Allows him to fight Orochimaru and Rasa simultaneously with the upper hand 173.
  • His lack of exceptional senjutsu aptitude, distracted mind, and sporadic training are cited as reasons for frog-like imperfections. In emergencies, he needs the elder toads' assistance to enter the form 230.
  • Orochimaru later values its trained, controllable nature over Jūgo's involuntary, aggression-inducing absorption of natural energy 282.

Toad Summoning

Jiraiya holds a summoning contract with Mount Myōboku 230.

  • Summons Gamabunta, Gamaken, and Gamahiro to counter a three-headed giant snake during Konoha's invasion 169.
  • Coordinates with Fukasaku to arrange reverse summoning to Mount Myōboku 239.
  • Receives battlefield support from Fukasaku, whose wind blast helps him escape the reach of Naruto's devastating attack 177.
  • His partnership has a difficult limit: Gamabunta visibly hesitates when the Great Toad Sage appears as an opponent during Life-and-Death Shogi 646.

Rasengan

  • Uses Rasengan against his enemies while in Sage Mode during the defense of Konoha 175.
  • Despite Hiruzen's plans, he does not become the main-timeline Naruto's formal master; Naruto later states that he never formally apprenticed under anyone 111 239 494.

Sealing and Barrier Techniques

  • Creates a simple soundproof barrier for his private conversation with Dan in the Land of Demons 395.
  • Possesses a scroll containing ninjutsu, sealing techniques, and personal notes 397.
  • Offers Dan sealing techniques more valuable than the basic ones Dan knows, allowing him to better repay Shion's help 397.

Intelligence Gathering

  • Maintains information channels through casinos and taverns across the Shinobi World 193.
  • Uses long-established contacts, regional knowledge, and investigative instincts to narrow the search for Iwaya Slope to the Land of Demons 393.
  • Recognizes the palace guards' coordinated security questioning and willingly cooperates rather than relying solely on his reputation 393.

Disguise and Infiltration

  • In the Drifting Duckweed side story, transforms into an ordinary-looking Martial Pacification Office member and suppresses his chakra presence to support the disguise 691.
  • Disguises himself in retaliation for Orochimaru impersonating him, taking Sasuke away from Orochimaru and arranging medical treatment 687.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Large scroll — Carried on his back or placed beside him while traveling 393 686.
  • Personal technique scroll — Contains ninjutsu, sealing methods, and accumulated insights; given to Dan Katō 397.
  • Theatrical costume and folding fan — Acquired after learning performance tricks from a troupe; used for his flamboyant entrance during Konoha's invasion 169.
  • Hiruzen's monitoring crystal ball — Connected to Konoha's sensory barrier and capable of displaying village scenes. Tsunade confiscates and destroys it because she distrusts Jiraiya's intentions 217.
  • Martial Pacification Office waist badge — Used with his disguise in the Drifting Duckweed side story 691.

Relationships

  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher and sponsor for the Fifth Hokage position. Hiruzen hopes to arrange Naruto's apprenticeship under him, but Jiraiya's behavior undermines the plan 72 111.
  • Minato Namikaze — Student whose death, and Jiraiya's absence during the Nine-Tails attack, remain major sources of regret 171 217.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — main timeline — Initially distrusts and rejects him. Jiraiya later helps him access Mount Myōboku and repeatedly urges him to become Hokage, but no formal apprenticeship develops 153 154 230 239 494.
  • Tsunade — Lifelong teammate and enduring love interest. He repeatedly pays her gambling debts; their friendship is strained when Orochimaru pressures her to obtain his blood for cloning research 193 282 397.
  • Orochimaru — Former teammate, close friend, rival, and scientific exploiter. Orochimaru condemns his neglect of Naruto and later pursues a clone of him to study trained Sage Mode 171 282 397.
  • Konan — Former student who reassures him that his teachings saved the Rain orphans and that their later choices were not his responsibility. She also helps care for Miwakan 345 347 348.
  • Yahiko and Nagato — Former students whom he believed dead. He promises Konan to try to recover Yahiko's body and tells her that Nagato survived his encounter with Naruto 345.
  • Fukasaku and Shima — Trusted senjutsu partners and advisers. In private, he calls them “Boss” and “Boss Lady” 173 344.
  • Great Toad Sage — Prophetic guide whose authority Jiraiya trusts, even when reluctantly leaving Naruto alone with him. Later becomes an opponent Jiraiya is especially unwilling to face 240 646.
  • Dan Katō — Former romantic rival who becomes a respected comrade. Jiraiya offers techniques and undertakes the journey to retrieve a body for his weakened soul 397 556.
  • Miwakan — Child created using Jiraiya's cells by Orochimaru. Jiraiya takes responsibility for him and awkwardly describes him as “more or less” his and Orochimaru's son 347.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Return to Konoha and Failed Apprenticeship

Hiruzen plans to recall Jiraiya as Fifth Hokage and have him reveal Naruto's parentage and restore the boy's reputation. The plan is complicated by Jiraiya's aversion to responsibility and, later, his disastrous first impression on Naruto and Sakura after being caught peeping 72 111.

Jiraiya's attempts to repair the relationship are clumsy. Naruto protects Karin from him, and a subsequent ramen delivery ends with Karin and Koyuki shutting him out. Orochimaru observes the rejection and treats it as a consequence of Jiraiya's thirteen-year absence from Naruto's life 153 154.

Defense of Konoha

Jiraiya returns during the invasion with three giant toads, lifting the defenders' morale. His theatrical entrance comes from a costume and performance routine originally intended to help him connect with Naruto 169.

He tries to stop Orochimaru from using Naruto's parentage against him, only to face a public indictment of his own neglect. Despite the emotional blow, he fights seriously in Sage Mode and gains the advantage against Orochimaru and Rasa 171 173.

Naruto's power then overturns Jiraiya's expectations: after witnessing Wood Release, Flying Thunder God, and near-instant ninjutsu, he privately wonders whether Naruto is already qualified to teach him. Once the battle ends, he leaves Sage Mode and rushes to the exhausted Hiruzen 177 178.

Fifth Hokage and Reconstruction

Jiraiya asks Naruto to rebuild damaged areas with Wood Release. After Naruto points out the need for safe foundations, Jiraiya orders patrol squads, Earth Release users, and taijutsu specialists to clear debris and prepare the ground 179.

He accepts the Fifth Hokage position and vows to take responsibility rather than flee his regrets. His administration is burdened by reconstruction, diplomacy, reassurance, and mediation. Naruto eventually carves his face into Hokage Rock, completing a monument delayed by more urgent rebuilding work 217 230 238 239.

Naruto later takes office as Sixth Hokage so that Jiraiya will not bear the blame for initiating a war. Jiraiya retires early, in keeping with his original reluctance to hold the position 494.

Iwaya Slope and the Pure Land

Concerned that Naruto's desperation may lead to destructive action, Jiraiya consults Mount Myōboku about reaching Iwaya Slope and recovering Minato and Kushina. The Great Toad Sage responds with a prophecy connecting Naruto's independently earned power, life-and-death eyes, and eventual access to the passage 344.

Jiraiya follows clues to the Land of Demons and meets Dan's weakened spirit. Dan's account reveals the Sage of Six Paths' apparent control of the Pure Land, the soul-eroding river Yomi, and a mysterious Rinnegan-bearing boy who helped him escape 393 395 396.

Jiraiya leaves to retrieve Dan's body and later returns with a body cultivated by Orochimaru. Naruto subsequently finds the two men performing kabuki at Oborozukiya, with Jiraiya playing a female role. When Naruto proceeds toward the passage to Iwaya Slope, Jiraiya and Dan accept his instruction to remain behind 397 556 558 562.

Life-and-Death Shogi

  • Fights alongside Gamabunta against the First Tsuchikage's Dust Release 646.
  • Becomes deeply troubled when the Great Toad Sage enters as an opponent, placing his loyalty to Mount Myōboku in conflict with the battle 646.

Another-World Counterpart: Rescue from Amegakure

A separate Jiraiya infiltrates Amegakure to investigate the Akatsuki's leader, having prepared for the possibility of death. Gravely wounded after fighting the Six Paths of Pain, he sinks into the water as a glowing golden dragon approaches 487 488.

Young Naruto brings him from the moment before death into a present more than ten years later. Tsunade rebuilds his missing arm with Hashirama cells, heals his throat, and stays beside him; Orochimaru oversees his immediate recovery. The rescue is time-space retrieval rather than conventional resurrection, and his original severed arm remains in the past, preserving the history behind Kashin Koji's creation 488 490.

He learns that his Naruto has become Seventh Hokage and that Young Naruto's Jiraiya instead became Fifth Hokage without establishing the same teacher-student bond. By their later dinner, the rescued Jiraiya regards returning, marrying Tsunade, and meeting Naruto's children as more than enough to satisfy him 488 493 494.

*Drifting Duckweed* Side Story

In this martial-arts setting, Jiraiya finds and adopts Naruto as an infant near the Land of Whirlpools. They remain almost inseparable until Naruto enters Konoha at nine; Jiraiya takes him into the wider world again at sixteen. Their later separation involves missions and differences in ideals 664 670.

During the Land of Snow escort, his apparently drunken manner conceals vigilance. He entrusts the confrontation with the Snow Ninja to Naruto while emphasizing the escort contract and avoidance of unnecessary local conflict. Naruto later discovers that the companion impersonating Jiraiya is Orochimaru, who admits taking Jiraiya's adopted son 664 665 670 687.

The real Jiraiya retaliates by taking Sasuke, arranges treatment with Tsunade, and seeks Mount Myōboku's guidance about the dangerous Red Swallow mission. He subsequently leaves Sasuke to recover and prepares a covert journey to the Land of Hot Water 687 688 689 690 691.
