Qiao Hua thought fast. "I'm here to pick up my test results."
Suspicion deepened in Gu Wenze's eyes. "Didn't you pick them up yesterday? Why are you here again today?"
"The doctor said there was a problem with the results, so they asked me to come back for a new copy."
She spoke so calmly that Gu Wenze could detect nothing unusual.
Gu Wenze frowned slightly. "So you didn't make me lunch because you came to the hospital to pick up your results?"
Qiao Hua answered without hesitation. "Of course. Is your lunch more important than my test results?"
Hearing that, Gu Wenze felt as though a wad of cotton had lodged in his chest.
His voice grew lower. "Then why didn't you tell me on the phone?"
Qiao Hua replied casually, "You make hundreds of millions a minute, Mr. Gu. How could I dare disturb you?"
Your heart belongs to Jiang Nan. Even if I'd told you, would you have cared?
You probably would've thought I was deliberately trying to get your attention.
I've got better things to do than that.
Gu Wenze suddenly felt as though a thorn had pierced his heart, leaving him unable to argue.
Qiao Hua was right. Even if she had told him on the phone that she was coming to the hospital for her results, he wouldn't have given it any thought.
Qiao Hua's gaze fell on the hand Gu Wenze had supporting Jiang Nan, and her eyes flickered. "What about you, Mr. Gu? Why are you at the hospital?"
Gu Wenze fell silent for a moment. He didn't mention that Jiang Nan had sent her a message. "I'm here with Jiang Nan for her follow-up."
Qiao Hua suspected nothing and gave a brief acknowledgment. "Then stay with her for her follow-up. I'll be going."
With both of them here, there was no way Qiao Hua could undergo the induced abortion. She would have to find another opportunity.
Qiao Hua started to leave, but Gu Wenze suddenly caught her wrist. "Where are you going?"
Watching Gu Wenze hold Qiao Hua's wrist, Jiang Nan's pupils contracted slightly.
Qiao Hua found the question baffling. "Home, obviously. Where else would I go?"
Gu Wenze's fingers tightened involuntarily, his tone cold and hard. "Don't come to this hospital for your checkups again. Find another one."
All this just because you're afraid I'll hurt your precious sweetheart?
I'm practically begging you two to stay together forever. Why would I hurt her?
Besides, I don't want to see you two walking curses either. I'd switch hospitals even if you hadn't said anything.
Qiao Hua patted Gu Wenze's shoulder. "Don't worry. I'll make sure to stay far away from you two next time."
An almost imperceptible searching look lurked in Gu Wenze's deep eyes.
In the past, Qiao Hua would have thrown a fit if he'd said something like that.
Today, not only had she caused no trouble, she actually seemed pleased.
Had Qiao Hua been possessed?
Once Qiao Hua left, Gu Wenze let go of Jiang Nan. "Are you all right?"
Jiang Nan shook her head gently, her face full of guilt. "Wenze, I've made you argue with Miss Qiao again. I'm so sorry."
"It's not your fault," Gu Wenze said. "She never knows when to let things go. Don't let her get to you."
Only then did Jiang Nan give him an understanding smile. "Don't worry. I won't."
After accompanying Jiang Nan to pick up her medication, Gu Wenze took her back to her apartment, stayed for a while, and left.
As she watched him leave, the smile vanished from Jiang Nan's face.
These last two times, Gu Wenze hadn't seemed as harsh toward Qiao Hua as before.
In the past, whenever Gu Wenze saw Qiao Hua giving her a hard time, he would always lash out at Qiao Hua.
It seemed she needed to take more drastic measures.
At that thought, Jiang Nan took her phone out of her pocket and made a call.
"Auntie Gu, it's me." Jiang Nan smiled, her voice sweet. "A beauty spa just opened near my place. I've heard their treatments are excellent. Shall we try it together?"
It was already evening when Gu Wenze returned to the villa. The living room was pitch-black, with a faint glow coming from in front of the sofa.
Gu Wenze saw Qiao Hua sitting at the coffee table with her back to him, busy with something he couldn't make out.
"What are you doing?"
Gu Wenze's sudden voice startled Qiao Hua.
She turned around and snapped, "Are you a ghost? You didn't make a sound walking in."
Gu Wenze noticed the job listings on her laptop, and his brows knitted tightly. "You're looking for a job?"
Qiao Hua didn't deny it. "Yes."
After the original owner of this body had gotten together with Gu Wenze, she had quit her job to stay home and devote herself to his daily needs.
Qiao Hua had no intention of doing something so exhausting.
He was a CEO. Surely he could afford a housekeeper?
The emotion in Gu Wenze's eyes slowly intensified. "Why do you suddenly want a job when things are fine as they are?"
Qiao Hua said, "I'm bored sitting around at home, so I want to find something to do."
If I don't go out and work, am I supposed to sit at home every day waiting for a scumbag like you to grace me with your presence?
You want me to be a housewife and take care of you? Not a chance.
Gu Wenze narrowed his eyes dangerously. "Are you blaming me for not having time for you?"
Qiao Hua looked utterly baffled. "Which part of what I said sounded like I was blaming you? Do domineering CEOs all have such peculiar thought processes?"
Gu Wenze said nothing, but his expression steadily darkened.
After a long silence, he said, "Do whatever you want."
With that, Gu Wenze went to the kitchen. But instead of a steaming meal, he found an empty dining table.
Gu Wenze's brow twitched. He turned to Qiao Hua. "Where's my dinner?"
Without turning around, Qiao Hua said, "Didn't I tell you I wouldn't be cooking for you anymore?"
Gu Wenze hadn't taken anything Qiao Hua had said during their phone call that afternoon seriously.
Naturally, he hadn't expected her to be bold enough to let him go hungry.
An icy chill settled over Gu Wenze's face. "Qiao Hua, is this your way of protesting?"
He didn't need to guess. Qiao Hua was clearly sulking because he had met up with Jiang Nan.
Qiao Hua looked utterly sincere, afraid Gu Wenze wouldn't believe her. "I'm really not protesting. If you two get together, I'll set off firecrackers from our front door for miles down the road to celebrate you finally becoming a couple."
To Gu Wenze, those words sounded like pure sarcasm. Even the rigid line of his jaw seemed to radiate a deathly cold fury.
Afraid he might strangle Qiao Hua if he stayed any longer, he turned and went upstairs before his patience reached its limit.
But when he entered the bedroom, Gu Wenze noticed that something seemed different.
A closer look revealed that all of Qiao Hua's belongings were gone from the walk-in closet. Even the suitcase she had tossed into the corner last night had disappeared.
Gu Wenze turned and went back downstairs. Looking at Qiao Hua sitting cross-legged in front of the sofa, her smooth calves exposed, he asked in a low voice, "Where are your things?"
Qiao Hua didn't even look up. "Oh, I moved into the guest room next door."
The air around Gu Wenze abruptly turned cold. "Who gave you permission to move?"
Qiao Hua hadn't even discussed it with him. She had simply taken it upon herself to move into another room.
Qiao Hua said, "Didn't you say I was annoying? Now that I've moved to another room, you can enjoy some peace and quiet."
Listen to yourself. You gave your sweetheart a home worth tens of millions without asking for my permission.
Besides, you won't let me move out. Can't I even change rooms?
And who knows what diseases you might have picked up out there? You'd better not bring them home and infect me.
Hearing Qiao Hua's thoughts, Gu Wenze felt the nameless irritation inside him grow stronger.
What on earth had gotten into Qiao Hua lately?
Why did she seem like a completely different person?
