Background / History
In her previous life, Xia Wanwan was a twenty-first-century master of mystic arts. She describes herself as the Metaphysics Ancestress, capable of summoning wind and rain, capturing ghosts, and subduing gods. Her death is unusually humiliating: she is blown to death by her ancestral master’s ashes 1 12.
She awakens as Liu Wan’s newborn daughter inside a novel she recognizes. In the original plot, servants replace the girl with Xie Huaishan, Xie Jin’an’s son by Xu Rourou, and send the girl to the Abandoned Infant Pagoda. Liu Wan unknowingly raises Huaishan for sixteen years before his recognition of his birth mother drives her to die of rage. He later engineers the destruction of Liu Wan’s birth family 1.
Wanwan’s cries and thoughts reach Liu Wan during the attempted swap. Her mother wakes, removes the cotton stuffed into her mouth, and stops the servants. This prevents the original substitution and gives Wanwan an opportunity to protect her mother from the future she remembers 1.
Appearance
Wanwan is a fair-skinned, rosy, chubby baby with large, bright, watery eyes and soft, plump cheeks. Her mother, brothers, the Fifth Princess, and Consort Ling repeatedly remark on her beauty 1 2 3 6 43.
- Expressive face: Puffs out her cheeks, flushes red, and turns away when angry or offended 14 33 47.
- Toothless gums: Cannot chew the meat she steals and instead sucks out its juices 21 43.
- Wedding outfit: Wears a festive red padded jacket, with her hair tied into two small tufts using red cords and fluffy pom-poms 46.
Personality
Wanwan is fiercely devoted to Liu Wan. She comforts her mother through her thoughts, condemns relatives who exploit her, and promises to take her away from the Marquis’s household when she grows up. Even the prospect of becoming a princess initially troubles her because she does not want to leave her mother 4 15 39.
Her inner voice is irreverent, blunt, and often mischievous. She delights in gossip, laughs at her opponents’ humiliations, and openly judges the adults’ schemes. Her affection for beautiful women survives transmigration: she wants to cuddle them despite the risks their rank poses to her anxious mother 8 15 23 33.
She is also practical about supernatural power. Although she considers saving Xiao Ju, she weighs the spiritual cost against losing her speech and slowing her development. Rather than immediately pursue the dangerous Taoist behind the ghost, she leaves a scent marker for later tracking 45.
Her infant body increasingly influences her behavior. She sucks her thumb, craves foods beyond milk, and becomes frustrated with her undeveloped speech and thinking. Sneaking donkey-hide gelatin cake causes a severe nosebleed and earns her punishment from Liu Wan 15 21 34.
Abilities & Skills
Audible Inner Voice
Wanwan’s thoughts can be heard by certain people without her speaking aloud. She initially believes she is communicating only with her mother, while other listeners gradually discover the ability 1 12 43.
| Listener | Documented evidence |
|---|---|
| Liu Wan | Hears Wanwan’s pleas, family secrets, and warnings from the attempted infant swap onward 1. |
| Xie Zi Xing | First mistakes the voice for a ghost; later responds to Wanwan’s opinions of his handwriting 2 12. |
| Xie Zi Mu | Hears the account of his original tragic future and resolves to protect his mother 3 12. |
| Emperor | Reacts to her thoughts during the household’s punishment; later recognizes their private connection 13 40. |
| Xia Siheng | Initially wonders where the voice originates, then listens to her supernatural advice while hiding his awareness 42 43. |
| Minister Liu | Reacts to her inner complaints about beginning lessons 47. |
| Lady Liu | Acts with Liu Wan on Wanwan’s warning about the household’s future destruction 47. |
| Liu Shi | Hears her revelations about Li Duoduo’s deception and is shaken by them 50. |
- The ability is not universal: Pan Chun cannot hear the voice when Liu Wan first asks about it 1.
- Wanwan does not consistently know who can hear her; she wishes Xia Siheng could receive information that he is already silently noting 45.
Knowledge of the Novel
Wanwan remembers the original story’s relationships, betrayals, and disasters. Her warnings allow relatives to question events that would otherwise appear harmless 1 6 47 50.
- Identifies Huaishan as Xie Jin’an and Xu Rourou’s child, exposing the purpose of the attempted swap 1.
- Warns that Huaishan will steal Zi Mu’s achievements and kill Zi Xing over their cousin 2 3.
- Recalls the approaching flood and the opportunity it would give Xie Jin’an to gain promotion and elevate Xu Rourou 21.
- Reveals Qing Sheng’s original fate, prompting Liu Wan to warn her against accepting food and entering the Third Master’s courtyard 24.
- Identifies Xu Bo as Huaishan’s grandfather and a spy involved in the future destruction of all fifty-eight residents of the Minister’s Residence 47.
- Limit: Her memory is incomplete. She cannot recall the full circumstances of Consort Ling’s haunting and is confused by unexpected changes to Xie Jin’an’s story 28 39.
Divination and Prophetic Words
Wanwan retains fortune-telling knowledge and identifies “words that become prophecy” as her strongest skill 4 11.
- Reads darkness and dampness between the Fifth Princess’s brows as a sign of danger involving water 6.
- Her criticism and subsequent praise coincide with Zi Xing’s handwriting deteriorating and improving 12.
- Her angry thoughts after being abandoned at Golden Mountain Temple are followed by lightning destroying the departing family carriage 17.
- Limits: A divination attempt fails when she investigates Xie Jin’an’s unexpected fate. Following the lightning incident, she falls asleep; Liu Wan concludes that making her words come true drains her strength 17 28.
Spiritual-Energy Absorption
Wanwan replenishes herself through Heaven and Earth Spiritual Energy. She seeks the palace for its dragon qi and finds particularly nourishing energy beneath Xia Zhao’s coral tree 12 14.
- Buries herself in soil to absorb earth energy 14 15.
- Receives spiritual nourishment from yellow rosewood 41.
- Uses stored energy to force her infant body to speak 15.
- Limit: Saying “Mama” nearly exhausts the energy she replenished at the palace. Saving Xiao Ju would also cost her speech and slow her development 21 45.
Healing and Rejuvenation
Wanwan’s burial ritual produces remarkable effects on the Empress Dowager, attracting wider palace interest 39 40.
- Removes the Dowager’s chronic cold-weather leg pain 39.
- Leaves her skin firmer and smoother, with wrinkles disappearing and her appearance returning to that of twenty years earlier 39.
- Inspires palace attendants, Xia Zhao, and Liu Wan to try the same pit; equivalent results for them are not documented 40.
Ghost Perception and Subjugation
Wanwan senses that Consort Ling’s paralysis is caused by a ghost rather than an illness the imperial physicians can treat 39 43.
- Overpowers Xiao Ju, detaches her head, and rides it before returning it to Xia Siheng 44.
- Reattaches the head backward, leaving Xiao Ju to correct it 45.
- Marks Xiao Ju with a drop of milk so she can later trace the Nanmei Taoist by its scent 45.
- Knows that Xiao Ju’s incomplete soul will perish at dawn 45.
