Lucia had taken such a hard line with Raphael partly because the missing person was her younger brother, and Raphael's unwillingness to help had angered her. Another reason was that she had once discussed with Miss Sharron the "Werewolf" who had retained his sanity in the forest in the West Suburbs.
Sharron suspected that it had most likely been Raphael.
She had arrived at that guess by elimination. There were at least seven or eight "Werewolves" in all of Backlund, but most belonged to either the Indulgence Faction or the Temperance Faction. There were no more than two unaffiliated "Werewolves."
Of course, Backlund had originally had a dozen or so "Werewolves," but five had died in the battle in the forest that Full Moon Night!
So for a long time afterward, the number of "Werewolves" in Backlund should have remained in the single digits.
As for why Miss Sharron believed there were so few unaffiliated "Werewolves," it was because Sequence 8 of this pathway
was "Lunatic," making them easy targets for Official Beyonders.
Moreover, without knowing the Acting Method, they were likely to advance to "Werewolf" before fully digesting the "Lunatic" potion.
On other pathways, this would merely leave them in somewhat worse condition, but on the "Prisoner" pathway, it would most likely cause them to lose control on the spot.
Thus, very few unaffiliated Beyonders were fortunate enough to become "Werewolves."
As it happened, Sharron knew one rather unusual "Werewolf." Raphael was unusual because he seemed to be Klein's subordinate, and Sharron thought he was very likely a believer of the Fool as well.
In that case, Raphael's ability to remain sane under a full moon might have been due to the Fool's protection.
Sharron's teacher had now also established some contact with Klein, so she had not explained
