Two police officers from the West Borough patrolled the streets as usual, chatting in low voices.
Suddenly, they spotted a dense crowd coming toward them along the street ahead.
Startled, both officers immediately reached for the whistles hanging around their necks.
But just as they were about to blow them, they suddenly felt ravenously hungry. They wanted food now, immediately, this very instant.
Like the crowd approaching them, they turned toward a nearby villa, thinking that those wealthy people's homes were bound to have food.
And so the two officers joined the crowd.

Leonard Mitchell, the newly appointed Archbishop of the outskirts of Backlund, suddenly appeared in the Nighthawks' communal lounge.
Two Nighthawks playing cards immediately rose. "Your Excellency."
Leonard grunted in acknowledgment. "Someone is spreading evil desires in Backlund. Wake every Nighthawk immediately and head to the scene.
"I've already ordered the bishops and priests to participate as well. Work with them to resolve this."
"Yes," the two Nighthawks replied.
They immediately split up to summon the others.
Soon, the Nighthawks arrived at the scene in carriages.
By then, the hungry people had already broken into the wealthy residents' homes and eaten their fill, terrifying the owners and their servants.
Some had even fired guns.
Normally, these impoverished people would have fled at the sound of gunfire. Today was different. As though someone had organized them, some went after the shooters while others searched for food.
Even after someone was shot dead, they still charged forward without hesitation, overwhelming the shooters, seizing their pistols, and killing them.
And so the West Borough that night was both chaotic and orderly.
The chaos came from the sudden influx of paupers and vagrants, who forced open the gates of wealthy households and fought bodyguards with their scrawny bodies.
