Feodor asked calmly, "Can you spare my family?"
Raphael said nothing. Instead, he took out a small vial of black liquid and poured it into Feodor's wineglass. "Drink it."
This was a poison he had prepared specifically for this operation.
Feodor hesitated briefly, then picked up the glass, took a deep breath, and drained it in one gulp.
Raphael nodded in satisfaction and raised a hand to signal that the others could leave.
The bodyguards and servants hurried outside. Feodor's family also left after tearfully saying their goodbyes.
Only Raphael and Feodor remained in the dining room. By now, the cloth merchant's entire body had turned black. The poison had clearly spread throughout his body.
Raphael stood, dismantled a chair with his bare hands, then tore off a strip of tablecloth and used it to lash together a crude cross.
