As for why they were visiting the Land of Wind, it all began with the Mecha Puppets Naruto and Sasori had been developing together.

After venturing into this field, Sasori's talent for the Puppet Technique had allowed him to surpass his predecessor and reclaim his throne as the Shinobi World's greatest puppeteer!
The Asura Path's Mecha Puppets had to receive Naruto's chakra through the Black Receivers of the Six Paths Technique before they could move. Though this was already a monumental improvement over traditional Puppet Techniques, it still severely limited the Mecha Puppets' practicality!
In an intense battle, there simply was no energy to spare for supplying puppets with chakra and controlling them!
Sasori of the Red Sands got straight to the heart of the matter. "Puppets are meant to help in battle, not burden their user. So our immediate priority is to overcome the need to manually supply chakra and control them..."
