Xiao Yuzhi's slash had startled even him. To everyone else, it was stunning; to the two Southern Yan spies, it was terrifying.
Pei Changtian and Yan Zhang had drawn close in pursuit, but the government officer's slash a short distance away made their hearts jump as well.
In truth, few of those present-including the officers and the people of Golden Jade Manor-had clearly seen that slash. Most had seen little more than a flash of white, followed by blood and agonized screams.
Yan Zhang instinctively glanced at Pei Changtian beside him, drew a deep breath, and murmured.
"So this is the depth of our Great Yong Imperial Court's resources. Or perhaps they simply don't trust us after all. To deal with a mere Golden Jade Gate, they actually sent an expert of this caliber."
Pei Changtian smiled.
"No need to overthink it, Uncle Yan. There are officials to deal with too, after all. Look at it another way—isn't this powerful support for us? The Imperial Court certainly doesn't like taking risks. Always assuming the worst is too narrow-minded!"
"You're right, young master!"
"Actually, there's merit in what you said too. But I still have to tell you an unpleasant truth. Never mind that we now count as people of the Imperial Court—even if we stood against it, the Skywhale Gang wouldn't warrant such painstaking efforts by the Imperial Court to deal with us."
The truth stabbed painfully at the heart, but after a bitter smile, those very words left Yan Zhang feeling considerably more at ease.
During this brief exchange, Pei Changtian reached Xiao Yuzhi first and offered heartfelt praise.

Xiao Yuzhi turned to look. Having already been briefed, he knew these two should be on their side.
