"Don't you recognize me? I'm Hui Mian-"
The child cried out, and the name "Hui Mian" seemed to hold a strange power. Jiang Lang, the wealthy young master, froze for a moment as memories awakened within him.
"I was wondering why this brat was so irritating. So it was you!"
Delighted surprise appeared on Jiang Lang's face.
"Wait a bit. Let me finish handing out the porridge!"
The Jiang family's workers and the refugees waiting for porridge were rather astonished. This child actually seemed to know the young master distributing the porridge.
Nearly an hour later, Jiang Lang found the child still lingering near the porridge shelter. Hui Mian lit up at the sight of him, but Jiang Lang gave him a meaningful look and headed elsewhere. Hui Mian immediately followed.
They stopped beside the alley behind the Jiang family's grain shop. Jiang Lang took a small bundle straight from his robe and handed it to Hui Mian.
"Here. Don't say I never look out for you!"
Hui Mian knew what was inside the moment he took the bundle. Sure enough, he opened it to find several steamed buns. His eyes lit up, and another look revealed a small bamboo container filled with pickled vegetables.
"Now that's a friend!"
Hui Mian stopped talking, squatted down, and dug straight in. He took such a huge bite of a bun that his cheeks bulged.
"Mmph, delicious... I haven't had a full meal in ages. So... so good..."
Jiang Lang squatted beside him and watched.
"Ah, I never thought you'd be human. I figured you'd still be a marten or a rat or something."
Hui Mian paused and glanced at Jiang Lang before continuing to eat, though he stopped again after a while.
"What, don't like the taste? I'm telling you, food like
