A fine drizzle had fallen all night on Cloud Summit Peak.
A cold wind laden with moisture blew into the main hall of a mountainside residence. In the hazy morning, while the sky was still dark and distant mountains lay shrouded in mist, more than a dozen Earth Rank Spirit Tamers from the Demon Alliance and the Five Sects of the Unorthodox Path had already gathered to discuss rescuing Yan Zhou.
They had just learned that the Heavenly Dao Alliance had passed judgment overnight and was about to proclaim it to the world and publicly execute him in accordance with the law.
The speed of its actions far exceeded their expectations and made its resolve plain.
These members of the Demon Alliance and elders of the Five Sects of the Unorthodox Path had originally been lobbying various parties, each trying to display their own powers. Now, however, they had no choice but to gather and pool their information and resources.
Each had friends on the Righteous Path. Although righteous and unorthodox stood opposed, people of their status and standing could, to some extent, move in both worlds. Perhaps those connections could prove invaluable at a critical moment.
Yet after they each reported their progress, they discovered, to their astonishment, that those connections had already become useless.
No matter how exalted their identities, how lofty their standing, how much authority they wielded, or what qualifications they possessed, none of those people had any say in this matter.
An even more powerful force had cut off every avenue through which they could intervene.
