Saint Jenny?
When the taxi arrived, Jenny hurried out, tossed the driver twenty dollars without waiting for change, and rushed into her aunt's yard.
Although her aunt's house seemed some distance from the Bayview District, Jenny had checked the map app on her phone during the taxi ride. In a straight line, it was less than a kilometer away.
Wasn't that practically cheek to cheek?
She reached the steps and rang the doorbell repeatedly, taking out her phone to call in case her aunt wasn't home.
Footsteps sounded inside.
Jenny called out right there at the door.
"Aunt Susan, it's Jenny! I think it's time to invite you over to our place. My dad... uh..."
The door opened, but the person before her wasn't her aunt, and certainly couldn't be her late uncle-in-law. It was an unfamiliar, heavyset woman.
"Hahaha, Jenny, you're here!"
Her aunt's voice came from the other end of the hallway.
"Come in, come in, Jenny, my darling!"
Smiling, her aunt hurried over from inside and joined the kindly, heavyset woman in welcoming Jenny into the house.
Once inside, Jenny got a shock.
The house was packed with people!
There were candlesticks and even a large cross in the living room, though this probably wasn't a particularly solemn prayer service. Fruit and snacks covered the tables nearby.
Jenny wasn't religious and didn't know much about these things.
"Come, let me introduce you all. This is my niece, Jenny! Ever since she was little, I've felt she was the Lord's gift to the world!"
Jenny felt a headache coming on.
Aunt Susan was about to launch into her usual speech about how Jenny was surely a Saint sent to the world by God. Good heavens, Auntie! Your niece wasn't even a virgin, never mind a Saint!
