An unequal conversation
The sky darkened once again.
Qin Xiaoxia had underestimated the efficiency of the national Special Security Team. He had thought it would take at least several days for that section of Mumu's body to reach Shencheng, but it arrived outside the city under cover of darkness the very next day.
However reluctant the researchers at the institute were to part with it, they could not break their word during their first meaningful contact with this mysterious power. They kept five percent of the tissue in reserve for research and sent the rest straight to Shencheng on a chartered flight.
Although they kept calling it the thorn remains, Mumu was a Tree Shepherd, and his original, complete form had been anything but small.
The mass of thorns on that section of his body filled half a shipping container and was kept in refrigerated storage.
On the far outskirts of Shencheng, a vast site enclosed by temporary walls blazed with lights. The rumble of machinery and the working excavators made it look like a newly opened construction site.
The Special Security Team sat in a row inside a specially modified command vehicle in a corner of the site, each holding a boxed meal as they watched the surveillance screens.
The feeds covered virtually every corner of the "construction site."
