Chapter 665: Hurry Up and Tell Us
"Shhh!!!!!!"
Old Jack's face flushed as he urgently told everyone to keep it down. The noise in the tavern did subside, but the atmosphere grew noticeably tenser.
Old Jack and his companion gulped down a few more mouthfuls of ale to steady their nerves. Many others in the tavern did the same.
The tavernkeeper insisted on topping up Old Jack's drink.
Old Jack lowered his head and wiped away the sweat brought on by his nerves. To everyone else, this was naturally a sign of lingering fear.
"The kingdom's higher-ups have suppressed the news. I don't know exactly how bad things are now, but I reckon they're still getting worse."
Old Jack exchanged a look with his companion, hesitated, then continued.
"We're fur traders. Doing business out on the western grasslands is dangerous work to begin with, so we have a little private circle of our own. We fled with the head of a large trading caravan."
"Actually, even before the Savage Beastmen invaded, that wealthy merchant was already deeply worried. He said something terrible was bound to happen!"
Now everyone in the tavern was curious. Many even moved their stools and chairs closer to the bar.
"The roast meat and bread are here!"
An assistant from the back room brought out the food Old Jack and his companion had ordered. The tavernkeeper personally took it over to the bar, setting two sour fruits beside it.
"Try crushing the sour fruit and drizzling the juice over it. The roast meat will taste even better."
"Thank you!"
Old Jack speared the roast meat on his plate with his fork and took a huge bite. As he chewed, he looked around the tavern. No one disturbed their meal.
After swallowing the meat he had chewed
