Background

Yan originated as Bai He's King of the Underworld Avatar, one of the manifestations produced through the God and Devil Avatar divine power. Unlike God Lord Azure, Yan is explicitly Bai He's Demonic Incarnation: he acts according to his own desires and favors direct, uninhibited action. Bai He initially dispatched Yan and Azure to spread Ability Seeds among Outsiders while he returned to Super God Academy. 200 205 240

Yan's original soul ability made him naturally suited to become a ruler of the dead: he could hook, sever, and seize souls, yet lacked the ability to command them. Seeking to remedy that weakness, he targeted the Feng family's inherited Spirit Binding to Dispatch a General technique. 205

Appearance

Yan commonly conceals himself in a black robe and hood, with his face obscured by an unnatural haze of black mist. He favors an intentionally mysterious and intimidating presentation. 205 209

  • Carries a nearly two-meter-long Death God Scythe. 222
  • Often appears as a dark, black-robed figure or shadow-like humanoid. 205 358
  • Uses the black robe to cultivate an image of mystery, which Feng Shayan dismisses as looking like a “dork” outside of battle. 209

Personality

Yan is arrogant, impulsive, and openly enjoys provoking trouble. He considers himself free to act according to his preferences, which led him to force his way through the Under Heaven Society merely to obtain a technique he wanted. 205 206

Behind his casual cruelty is considerable ambition. Yan does not want to remain merely a useful avatar; he seeks to become a genuine King of the Underworld capable of commanding the dead across different worlds. He also displays strategic pragmatism, exchanging cultivation knowledge for Spirit Binding rather than trying to seize the Feng technique outright. 207 214

Yan can be casual and playful when unchallenged, bickering with Feng Shayan and watching television, but he maintains absolute control over the spirits bound to him. The Four Madmen obey him out of fear after experiencing punishments that simulate Undead Crows devouring their souls. 209 258

Abilities & Skills

Soul Hooking and Soul Snatching

Yan's core ability allows him to sever, capture, and manipulate the souls or possessing spirits of others.

  • Temporarily severed the souls of Under Heaven Society guards without killing them. 205
  • Neutralized Feng Zhenghao's Spirit Possession by extracting the spirits empowering him. 207
  • Shook Xiao Xiao's spirit from his body with a palm strike. 219
  • Can use the Death God Scythe to remove possessing spirits without physically cutting the target apart. 233
  • Initially could seize souls but could not command spirits, motivating his pursuit of Spirit Binding to Dispatch a General. 205

Death God Scythe

Yan's signature weapon is a soul-targeting scythe that can interact with both physical attacks and incorporeal spiritual entities.

  • Cut apart a compressed-air Air Cannon. 206
  • Dispelled Zhuge Qing's invisible wind ropes and split spell-created flames. 222 223
  • Passed through Wang Ai's attempted weapon grab and removed part of the spirit possessing him. 233
  • Its soul-harvesting effect is difficult to resist without Spirit Binding-type abilities. 223

Spirit Binding to Dispatch a General

After his confrontation with Feng Zhenghao, Yan acquired an incomplete version of the Feng family's spirit-manipulation technique.

  • Uses it to supplement Soul Hooking and Soul Snatching rather than as his primary cultivation method. 208
  • Enables him to bind and command spirits, including the Four Madmen. 258
  • Serves as the foundation for his later Nine Nether Hell Prison Art. 259

Undead Crows / Ravens

Yan commands a growing flock of raven spirits associated with death and the underworld.

  • Had subdued nearly one hundred raven spirits shortly after joining the Under Heaven Society. 209
  • Can use the flock to spread Soul Hooking and Soul Snatching over a wide area. 209
  • The Nine Nether Hell Prison Art's Undead Crows can harm both bodies and souls. 215
  • Used Undead Ravens to transport himself, Zhang Chulan, and Feng Baobao across Dragon Tiger Mountain's rift. 218
  • Shares their vision, but they cannot provide sound because the spirit birds have no hearing. 256

Netherworld Power and Watery Viscera Thunder

Yan developed a Yin-aligned power system intended to create and expand a death domain.

  • Created black, viscous Netherworld Power that pollutes and devours Qi. 223
  • Overwhelmed Zhuge Qing's Qimen Formation, forcing him into direct combat. 223
  • Repelled incoming lightning automatically when struck, exposing the Yin nature of Yan's power. 223
  • Drew inspiration from Zhang Lingyu's Thunder Technique while developing the technique. 214

Spirit Grasping Hand

A later soul-control application capable of forcibly probing a target's memories.

  • Was used to demonstrate Yan's power against Xin Yue Kui during the counterattack against the God Race. 449
  • A full-force soul search could leave the target an idiot; Bai He specifically forbade Yan from using it that severely on Xin Yue Kui. 449

Martial Arts

Yan also employs combat techniques inherited from Bai He.

  • Used Dragon Grasping Hand to redirect Xiao Xiao's Snorting Qi back at him. 219
  • Can move at high speed with Godly Void Steps, though he chose not to use it against Zhuge Qing because the Death God Scythe was already lethal enough. 223

Equipment

  • Death God Scythe — Yan's principal weapon; cuts physical attacks and extracts or imprisons spirits. 206 207 233
  • Black Robe — A hooded robe that hides his features in black mist and reinforces his deliberately mysterious image. 205 209

Relationships

  • Bai He — Creator and original body. Yan is Bai He's Demonic Incarnation and remains subject to Bai He's direction, though his personality is allowed to act more freely. 200 205 240
  • God Lord Azure — Fellow God and Devil Avatar. Yan views Azure as a rival in potential and rejects the idea of remaining beneath him. 200 214
  • Feng Zhenghao — Initially an adversary whose inherited technique Yan sought; later traded techniques with Yan and attempted to retain him within the Under Heaven Society through a marriage arrangement. 207 208
  • Feng Shayan — Feng Zhenghao pushed her toward a relationship with Yan to secure his loyalty. She resented the arrangement but later traveled with him and kept him informed of the Luo Tian Grand Ritual. 208 209 215
  • Feng Xingtong — Treated Yan as his prospective brother-in-law and supported him during the Luo Tian Grand Ritual. 216 219
  • The Four Madmen — Former Quanzhen Sect members captured and transformed into spirits under Yan's command. They fear his punishments but carry out his missions. 258
  • Balun Grylls — A spirit subordinate assigned to guide the Four Madmen during their North American operation. 258 259
  • Angel Yan — A distinct female Angel with the same name. Bai He later introduced the Demonic Clone Yan to Angel Yan as “Yan of the Yanwang.” 559
  • Aini Xide — Yan was assigned to protect her as Bai He's substitute, with Bai He judging Yan strong enough for the task. 559

Under Heaven Society Incident

Yan entered the Under Heaven Society to obtain Spirit Binding to Dispatch a General. He defeated security teams and cadres across multiple floors, then overcame Feng Zhenghao by stripping away the spirits empowering him. Luo Tian Grand Ritual

Yan entered the Luo Tian Grand Ritual seeking the Tong Tian Lu and to observe Zhang Chulan. He defeated Xiao Xiao by redirecting Snorting Qi and shaking out his spirit, then forced Zhuge Qing to concede by using Netherworld Power to consume his Qimen Formation. 215 219 223

Demon and Skeleton Party Investigation

While investigating demon activity around Huang Village, Yan uncovered Demons mining gold and transferring it through a Wormhole for the Skeleton Party. He later dispatched the Four Madmen and Balun Grylls to disrupt the organization in North America. 254 256 257 258 259

Trivia

  • Yan's title, “King of the Underworld,” reflects his long-term ambition to command the dead rather than merely possess a soul-related ability. 214
  • He deliberately chose ravens as his first spirit servants because of their association with life, death, and the underworld. 209
  • Yan cannot actively kill humans because of his connection to Bai He, which initially made naturally occurring human spirits difficult for him to acquire. 209
  • He shares his name with Angel Yan, but they are separate characters: Yan is Bai He's male Demonic Incarnation, while Angel Yan is the Angel Queen. 559 565
