Background
Dumbledore taught Defense Against the Dark Arts from 1910 to 1927. During that period, the Ministry asked him to confront the rising Grindelwald; he refused, was fitted with a warning ring, and was barred from teaching the subject until later regaining the post. 550
By 1945, he had defeated Grindelwald. His recognized accomplishments also include discovering the twelve uses of dragon’s blood and collaborating with Nicolas Flamel in alchemy. 36
In 1956, while serving as Hogwarts’ Transfiguration professor, Dumbledore encountered the first-year Caradoc Dearborn. He later became Headmaster that same year and secretly continued teaching Dearborn to keep him from following Tom Riddle’s path. 548 Dumbledore had previously taught Riddle himself, recognizing him as an exceptionally brilliant but increasingly dark student. 206
He founded the Order of the Phoenix in 1970 with four others rather than acting as its sole founder. Its early membership combined politically influential families, Hogwarts-connected figures, and front-line anti-Death Eater fighters. 548 550
Dumbledore placed the orphaned Harry Potter with the Dursleys, believing Lily Evans’ protective magic required him to live with her relatives. He monitored Harry’s upbringing through Mrs. Figg, while privately admitting that Harry’s identity as a living Horcrux had made him fear his own capacity to sacrifice the boy. 162
Appearance
Dumbledore is an elderly wizard with silver hair and a long silver beard, pale blue eyes, a crooked long nose, and half-moon spectacles. 36 197
- Often wears elaborate wizarding robes, including purple robes embroidered with stars and moons. 641
- Wields the unusually thick Elder Wand. 28 735
- His expression is usually calm or genial, though Grindelwald’s name has caused rare visible losses of composure. 389
Personality
Dumbledore presents himself as warm, humorous, and patient. He reassures frightened students, values friendship, and is capable of making difficult magical lessons accessible. 103 735 He places particular importance on kindness, believing Harry’s greatest strength comes from his heart rather than raw power. 319
Behind this manner is an intensely self-critical strategist. He regards himself as a failure at nurturing “a healthy, happy soul,” distrusts his own desire for power, and recognizes the cruelty embedded in decisions made for the greater good. 162 His compassion can therefore coexist with manipulation: he engineers dangerous confrontations, withholds truths from Harry, and uses even his own death in long-term plans against Voldemort. 51 162 197
Though he once avoided political authority, Dumbledore later recognizes the scale of his influence over British wizarding society and uses it to overturn wrongful convictions, reform practices, and contain dangerous magic. 338 356
Abilities & Skills
Demigod-Level Magic
Dumbledore is described as a Demigod wizard and had reached level 6 through a philosophy of love. 164 755
- Possesses exceptional breadth of magical knowledge and can match Voldemort’s destructive power while wielding the Elder Wand. 180
- Identified an unseen Killing Curse and its caster through a fleeting magical trace during combat. 864
- Can respond to high-level threats with rapid improvisation rather than fixed spell sequences. 735 864
- His physical transformations and bodily enhancement are comparatively limited beside his magical mastery. 422
Elder Wand Mastery
Dumbledore possesses the Elder Wand, one of the Deathly Hallows. 28
- Repaired Hagrid’s broken wand and enabled Hagrid to continue using magic. 28
- Uses the wand with extraordinary speed, evading Harry’s Disarming Charm and appearing behind him before Harry can react. 735
- Created and absorbed Fiendfyre constructs, then used the gathered fire to collapse Voldemort’s manifested body. 864
- The wand exerts a subtle influence on his outlook toward death, which Dumbledore eventually recognizes without attempting to remove. 163 633
Phoenix Magic
Dumbledore has an unusually deep connection with phoenixes, particularly Fawkes. His magic permeates Fawkes with a self-sacrificing, all-encompassing love that Ryan perceives as resolute but lacking self-love. 17
- Uses flame-based Apparition rather than relying on conventional travel. 621 861
- Can send a phoenix-like Patronus for communication; this form is difficult to imitate and resists dark magic. 761
- Conjured a white phoenix whose magic restored damaged land, cleared polluted air, and dispersed storm clouds and hostile magic. 860
- Creates disposable emergency signaling devices using Fawkes’ tail feathers as cores. 337
Magical Scholarship
Dumbledore is an accomplished alchemist, researcher, and instructor in rare magic. 36 594
- Discovered the twelve uses of dragon’s blood. 36
- Worked productively with Nicolas Flamel in alchemy. 36
- Teaches Magic Arrays, explaining them as patterns derived from magical creatures’ innate powers. 622
- Performed Ravenclaw’s secret Ghostification magic to create a ghostly feast, though the effort visibly strained him. 576
- Uses a Pensieve to preserve and examine memories connected to Voldemort’s lineage and Horcruxes. 608
Strategy and Leadership
Dumbledore plans several moves ahead, often using controlled risks to expose enemies and gather information.
- Used the Philosopher’s Stone as bait to draw Voldemort out and determine whether Voldemort knew Harry was a Horcrux. 162 353
- Allowed Harry and Voldemort to confront one another while preventing Snape from entering, believing Snape’s intervention would endanger Harry. 194
- Destroyed the Philosopher’s Stone with Flamel after its theft to prevent its misuse. 197
- Offered Tom Riddle’s conscience-fragment a Defense Against the Dark Arts position under contract, hoping to redirect him toward redemption while keeping him under observation. 233 258 321
- Resealed Greek myth-related spells and the Time-Turner when his political influence reached its height. 338
Teaching
Dumbledore is a highly effective teacher whose lessons range from practical defense to obscure advanced magic. 103 608
- Substituted for Quirrell and delivered an exceptional Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson. 103
- Privately trained Harry in Occlumency, Wind magic, Horcrux research, the Pensieve, and magical creature theory. 547 608 622 735
- Taught Harry to merge with wind for rapid movement and demonstrated agility that belied his age. 735
- Guided Triwizard champions through the “Savior” spell and the selection of titles that shape magical development. 838 841 845

Riddle’s Redemption Experiment
After the Diary-related fragment of Tom Riddle becomes independent, Dumbledore offers him the Defense Against the Dark Arts post for two years. The decision alarms Hogwarts’ former Headmasters, but Dumbledore believes the fragment may be capable of change. 233 234 321
