Background
Interest in Tahm
Orochimaru first appears alongside Kakuzu during Sasori's assault on Tahm and Kakashi. He captures Karin to pressure Tahm and immediately becomes interested in Tahm's unexplained abilities and body 40. Tahm escapes with Karin through Void Walk, Devour, and Abyssal Voyage, leaving Orochimaru surprised and frustrated 41.
Afterward, Orochimaru publicly spreads detailed intelligence concerning Tahm's abilities through a newspaper report, identifying him to Akatsuki as the “Toad from Mount Myōboku” 46.
Danzō's Experimenter
Danzō sends Tahm to Orochimaru's Land of Rice Fields base with a collection of three-tomoe Sharingan. In exchange for producing Danzō's Sharingan-compatible prosthetic arm, Orochimaru receives seven days to experiment on Tahm 68 70.
Orochimaru finds that Tahm has no blood or other recoverable bodily fluids, no functional vital points, no pain response, immediate restoration from physical damage, and unusual resistance to sealing. Danzō's agreement forbids Orochimaru from using genjutsu on Tahm, while Tahm's teleportation and defensive abilities prevent Orochimaru from forcibly taking his body 70.
Setbacks and New Targets
Danzō's death ends Orochimaru's collaboration with Root and exposes his hidden connections to Konoha. Hidden Leaf teams destroy several of his bases, costing him subordinates and experimental resources 165.
His attempts to acquire Suigetsu Hōzuki and Kimimaro Kaguya also fail before he can act. Obsessed with Itachi Uchiha's Mangekyō Sharingan and “perfect” body, Orochimaru ambushes Itachi but is driven into retreat after repeatedly surviving Amaterasu with the Orochimaru-Style Substitution Technique 165.
Orochimaru subsequently identifies Sasuke as a promising target: someone whose perceived powerlessness could be exploited into a desire for strength. Sasuke's Sage Chakra-enhanced Cursed Seal and loyalty to Konoha instead frustrate Orochimaru's efforts to manipulate him 190 203.
Pursuit of Sagehood
Orochimaru studies cultivation and Sage Arts as possible routes to immortality. His experiments to create Sage Mode achieve a 60% success rate, but every altered subject dies; Kabuto questions the method, while Orochimaru continues regardless 205.
He eventually masters Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode, gaining a substantial increase in speed, physical ability, Chakra reserves, and recovery. He considers ordinary power inadequate, seeking a “sublimation of the life form” and eternal existence instead 227 228.
Fourth Kazekage Ambush and Escape
Orochimaru plans to capture the Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, and ignite a war against Konoha. He ambushes Rasa with Guren and Manda, employs Sage Art: Strike Decimation Chaotic Snakes, and uses Impure World Reincarnation to summon the First and Second Hokage and the Third Kazekage as his rearguard 227 229.
Tahm's group pursues him across the desert. Orochimaru evades their attacks through Sage Mode-enhanced speed, repeated molting substitutions, decoys, and the Eight Branches Technique, but is critically wounded by sustained Amaterasu 230 232 233.
Near death, Orochimaru uses Living Corpse Reincarnation to possess the puppeteer Mukade, then absorbs Mukade's memories through Soul Fusion. Learning of the Dragon Vein and its space-time technique, he activates it as a final escape from Tahm's pursuing group 234.
Future and Parallel-World Research
Orochimaru arrives in a future Rōran and kills a Sunagakure security squad to absorb their memories and understand the changed world 235. He later encounters a counterpart from another world—identified by the narrative as “Orochimaru Two”—and the two begin cooperating on Dragon Vein research 236 279.
Their research shifts from body transfer and soul immortality toward the origin of Chakra itself. Concluding that human civilization remains constrained by Ōtsutsuki bloodline inheritance, they choose to investigate the planet's possible consciousness as “Orochi Consciousness” 279.
Tailed Beast Campaign and Defeat
After reappearing near the Dragon Vein, Orochimaru attacks Jinchūriki across multiple villages and helps Black Zetsu seize five Tailed Beasts 357 359. Using his enhanced Impure World Reincarnation, he builds an army of powerful shinobi from two worlds and plans a direct assault on Kumogakure to seize the Eight-Tails 359 360.
Tahm's clone army and allies overwhelm Orochimaru's forces. Tahm ultimately uses Plankton and the Rinne Rebirth Technique to restore Hashirama, Madara, and Six Paths Madara to life, breaking Orochimaru's control over them and leaving him surrounded by his former assets 368. Tahm later captures Orochimaru alive and binds him with Kotoamatsukami rather than killing him 372.
Appearance
Orochimaru is a slender figure with long black hair, pale features, and distinctive vertical snake-like pupils. His appearance is highly mutable through body transfer, transformations, and disguises 68 165 199.
- Long black hair and narrow, amber snake eyes 68 276
- Frequently displays a serpentine smile and tongue-flicking mannerisms 68 201
- Can disguise himself as the young girl “Orochi-hime” 199
- Sage Mode manifests a dragon-like horn, Chakra cloak, and snake-shaped Chakra tentacles 228 229
- Can assume a massive White Snake form or the eight-headed, eight-tailed serpent of the Eight Branches Technique 235 233
Personality
Orochimaru is relentlessly curious, analytical, and obsessed with knowledge that can overcome mortality. He regards bodies, Kekkei Genkai, souls, and Sage Arts primarily as research material, and his interest intensifies when confronted with phenomena outside established biological or ninjutsu principles 70 200 201.
He is manipulative and opportunistic, selecting vulnerable people such as Sasuke as potential subjects or vessels. His greed often undermines his restraint, as shown by his reckless attempt to take Itachi's body despite recognizing the danger 165 190.
Despite his arrogance, Orochimaru prioritizes survival when a battle turns against him. He retreats, molts, substitutes, splits into clones, changes vessels, and ultimately gambles on space-time travel rather than accept death 165 229 233 234.
Abilities & Skills
Scientific Research and Experimentation
Orochimaru is an exceptionally capable researcher whose work spans body modification, transplantation, artificial life, souls, Sage Arts, and forbidden techniques.
- Analyzed Tahm's abnormal physiology through extensive physical and chemical testing 70
- Produced Danzō's Sharingan-compatible prosthetic arm from Root's collected eyes 68 70
- Developed artificial Sage-body research, including Mitsuki in the parallel-world timeline 276
- Uses clones and specialized perception techniques as efficient research assistants during Dragon Vein excavation 290
*Living Corpse Reincarnation*
A body-transfer technique that allows Orochimaru to preserve himself by taking a new vessel.
- Requires mental suppression of the target and a victim unable to resist 70
- Failure severely harms Orochimaru, making it unsuitable for casual use in active combat 70
- Used to seize Mukade's body while critically injured in the desert 234
- Repeated use weakens Orochimaru's soul over time 279
Soul Fusion Technique
A soul-based technique used to absorb memories and compensate for damage caused by repeated reincarnation.
- Absorbed Mukade's memories after possessing him, obtaining knowledge of the Dragon Vein and space-time technique 234
- Consumed the memories of Sunagakure shinobi after arriving in the future 235
- Slows the deterioration of his soul but does not grant true immortality or direct power growth 279
Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode
Orochimaru's Sage transformation, achieved after his earlier experimental failures.
- Greatly enhances speed, agility, body functions, and Chakra recovery 229 232
- Forms a horn, dense Chakra cloak, and solid snake-like Chakra appendages 228
- Supports repeated use of his chakra-intensive molting substitution 232
- Cannot be maintained when his damaged body can no longer balance spiritual, physical, and natural energy 234
Snake Techniques and Survival Methods
Orochimaru's fighting style emphasizes flexible anatomy, summons, substitutions, and escape.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands — launches snakes to bind targets 165
- Orochimaru-Style Substitution Technique — sheds a damaged outer body and emerges anew; heavy Chakra consumption limits repeated use without Sage Arts 165 232
- White Snake division — splits the Eight Branches serpent body into eight identical fleeing snakes, making the real body difficult to identify 233
- Manda control — dominates the giant snake summon Manda despite its reluctance 228
*Impure World Reincarnation*
Orochimaru's refined version of the forbidden resurrection technique summons deceased shinobi while preserving their consciousness.
- Initially controls the reincarnated First and Second Hokage and Third Kazekage as battlefield rearguard units 229 230
- Later refines the technique over sixteen years to restore powerful figures without weakening them, including Madara with his Rinnegan 359
- Modifies the technique so the controlled will is treated as beneficial rather than removable, preventing Tahm from permanently freeing targets through his cleansing ability 368
- Loses control when Tahm restores the reincarnated shinobi to living bodies through Rinne Rebirth 368
*Eight Branches Technique*
Orochimaru's emergency transformation into an enormous eight-headed serpent.
- Produces a serpent body with eight heads, eight tails, white scales, and immense close-range power 233
- Can regenerate injuries with a Sage Chakra cloak, though concentrated Amaterasu can burn through it 233
- Functions as both a combat form and an escape method through snakeskin shedding and division into eight White Snake bodies 233
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Blade — used during Orochimaru's physical testing on Tahm, including attacks aimed directly at Tahm's eyes and brain 70
- Sharingan samples — received a shipment of Root-collected three-tomoe Sharingan for experimentation and Danzō's prosthetic-arm project 68
Relationships

- Kabuto Yakushi — Loyal assistant who questions Orochimaru's riskier experiments and military plans but continues supporting him 165 205 227.
- Danzō Shimura — Secret collaborator who trades Sharingan and Tahm's cooperation for a specialized prosthetic arm; their partnership ends with Danzō's death 68 165.
- Guren — Assistant and combat partner who aids the ambush on Rasa with Crystal Release; Orochimaru abandons her while escaping Tahm's group 68 228 234.
- Itachi Uchiha — Desired vessel and dangerous opponent; Orochimaru's attempt to take Itachi's body ends in a retreat from repeated Amaterasu 165.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Intended target of Orochimaru's manipulation and Cursed Seal; Sasuke's power and devotion to Konoha frustrate Orochimaru's plans 190 202 203.
- Jiraiya — Former classmate whose feelings toward Orochimaru remain conflicted; Jiraiya repeatedly confronts or monitors him while retaining nostalgia for their past 204 233 278.
- Mitsuki — Orochimaru's artificial Sage-body “son” in the parallel-world timeline; Orochimaru displays unusual parental warmth toward him 273 276.
