Background / History

Hollows originate from deceased souls. A soul with weaker attachments can enter Soul Society, while one carrying powerful attachments or resentment may instead become a Hollow. The transformation erases nearly all memories, though lingering instincts and obsessions can remain. 27 234

The Soul King divided existence into the Human World, Soul Society, and Hueco Mundo because Hollows once devoured souls without restraint. The division confined Hollows to Hueco Mundo, but did not stop new Hollows from forming or prevent them from crossing into other realms. 93

Their continued existence is also part of the balance of the Three Realms: Hollows are themselves spiritual entities, so their complete extermination would hasten the world's collapse. 93

Appearance

Hollow bodies vary drastically, from small animal-like creatures to towering Menos Grande and near-human Vasto Lordes. 31 61 89

• Most are recognized by a white bone mask fused to the face. 318
• Hollows are ordinarily expected to possess a Hollow hole; a humanoid creature lacking one was considered anomalous. 200
• Higher-ranked Hollows may become more human-like in appearance; Coyote Starrk is nearly indistinguishable from a human except for the hole in his chest. 89
• Menos Grande can be immense: the Gillian encountered by Hane Hane Chiyo stood over fifteen meters tall. 61

Personality

Most Hollows lack intelligence and act solely on biological impulse: they hunt, consume spiritually powerful prey, flee stronger enemies, and attack when they believe they can win. 1 32

Intelligence is not guaranteed by rank. Some ordinary Hollows can think, speak, plan ambushes, take hostages, or bargain, while some Menos Grande remain instinct-driven. 4 188 245 Intelligent Hollows can also be driven by ambitions inherited from their lives before death, as seen in Salkapolo's continued obsession with experimentation. 234

Soul Consumption and Evolution

Hollows consume souls and other spiritual beings to grow stronger.

• They are naturally drawn to targets with high Reiatsu, including Soul Reapers. 29 211
• Intelligent Gillians may consume other Hollows to pursue evolution into Adjuchas. 4
• Hollows may devour captured victims later; spider-type Hollows have been shown preserving living Soul Reapers as food. 245

Cero

Many Menos Grande and stronger Hollows can fire Ceros: concentrated blasts of Reiatsu.

• Ceros can be fired from the mouth, hands, or condensed into close-range attacks. 5 33
• Multiple Menos Grande can bombard targets simultaneously with Ceros of different colors. 32 33
• Ceros can be countered by opposing Reiatsu-based attacks. 33

Garganta

Hollows use Gargantas to travel between realms or flee threats.

• Hollows escaped the Seireitei through a massive Garganta after sensing Yamamoto's Reiatsu. 8
• Large-scale incursions can involve numerous Gargantas opening simultaneously and releasing Menos Grande into Soul Society. 62 213

Sound Steps

Sound Steps are a Hollow-exclusive high-speed movement technique described as similar to short-range teleportation. 5 34

Hard Skin

Some Hollows possess Hard Skin, a defensive trait that increases in durability with Reiatsu. 174
