| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Hollow | 27 234 | Formed from a soul with powerful attachments or resentment; retains instincts and fragments of its former obsessions while losing most memories. |
| Gillian / low-level Menos Grande | 4 | A Hollow that devours sufficient Hollows or spirits can evolve into a Gillian. Most Gillians remain unintelligent. |
| Adjuchas | 4 5 | An intelligent Gillian may devour hundreds or thousands of its own kind to evolve. The Gillian encountered at Kofuku Mountain reached this stage after consuming a Spider Menos Grande's corpse, gaining captain-comparable Reiatsu, speech, and Sound Steps. |
| Vasto Lorde | 4 78 | The rarest documented Menos stage, surpassing ordinary captains in strength. Only one among countless Adjuchas is said to reach this level. |
Background / History
Hollows originate from deceased souls. A soul with weaker attachments can enter Soul Society, while one carrying powerful attachments or resentment may instead become a Hollow. The transformation erases nearly all memories, though lingering instincts and obsessions can remain. 27 234
The Soul King divided existence into the Human World, Soul Society, and Hueco Mundo because Hollows once devoured souls without restraint. The division confined Hollows to Hueco Mundo, but did not stop new Hollows from forming or prevent them from crossing into other realms. 93
Their continued existence is also part of the balance of the Three Realms: Hollows are themselves spiritual entities, so their complete extermination would hasten the world's collapse. 93
Appearance
Hollow bodies vary drastically, from small animal-like creatures to towering Menos Grande and near-human Vasto Lordes. 31 61 89
- Most are recognized by a white bone mask fused to the face. 318
- Hollows are ordinarily expected to possess a Hollow hole; a humanoid creature lacking one was considered anomalous. 200
- Higher-ranked Hollows may become more human-like in appearance; Coyote Starrk is nearly indistinguishable from a human except for the hole in his chest. 89
- Menos Grande can be immense: the Gillian encountered by Hane Hane Chiyo stood over fifteen meters tall. 61
Personality
Most Hollows lack intelligence and act solely on biological impulse: they hunt, consume spiritually powerful prey, flee stronger enemies, and attack when they believe they can win. 1 32
Intelligence is not guaranteed by rank. Some ordinary Hollows can think, speak, plan ambushes, take hostages, or bargain, while some Menos Grande remain instinct-driven. 4 188 245 Intelligent Hollows can also be driven by ambitions inherited from their lives before death, as seen in Salkapolo's continued obsession with experimentation. 234
Abilities & Skills
Soul Consumption and Evolution
Hollows consume souls and other spiritual beings to grow stronger.
- They are naturally drawn to targets with high Reiatsu, including Soul Reapers. 29 211
- Intelligent Gillians may consume other Hollows to pursue evolution into Adjuchas. 4
- Hollows may devour captured victims later; spider-type Hollows have been shown preserving living Soul Reapers as food. 245
Cero
Many Menos Grande and stronger Hollows can fire Ceros: concentrated blasts of Reiatsu.
- Ceros can be fired from the mouth, hands, or condensed into close-range attacks. 5 33
- Multiple Menos Grande can bombard targets simultaneously with Ceros of different colors. 32 33
- Ceros can be countered by opposing Reiatsu-based attacks. 33
Garganta
Hollows use Gargantas to travel between realms or flee threats.
- Hollows escaped the Seireitei through a massive Garganta after sensing Yamamoto's Reiatsu. 8
- Large-scale incursions can involve numerous Gargantas opening simultaneously and releasing Menos Grande into Soul Society. 62 213
Sound Steps
Sound Steps are a Hollow-exclusive high-speed movement technique described as similar to short-range teleportation. 5 34
- An Adjuchas used Sound Steps to vanish behind Yamabuki Chidori and attack with a Cero-infused fist. 5
- The technique enables rapid repositioning in combat. 34
Hard Skin
Some Hollows possess Hard Skin, a defensive trait that increases in durability with Reiatsu. 174
- It can make bladed attacks ineffective unless the attacker possesses enough force to break through. 73 174
- Higher-ranking Hollows may combine Hard Skin with powerful physical strength. 73
Super Regeneration
Certain Hollows can regenerate catastrophic bodily damage at extreme speed.
- Limb loss and severe wounds may be healed in seconds. 45 74
- Against a Hollow with Super Regeneration, severing the head or destroying internal organs is considered necessary for a reliable kill. 237 318
- Not every Hollow possesses this ability. 237 377
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Hollows are Yamabuki Chidori's earliest enemies as a Soul Reaper. His mission at Kofuku Mountain leads to the defeat of a Spider Menos Grande and an intelligent Gillian that evolves into an Adjuchas during battle. 4 5
- Shunshun Shidō uses Hollow Lure to draw thousands of Hollows into the Seireitei, creating the crisis that Yamamoto exploits to establish the Gotei 13's authority. 8
- Hueco Mundo's Hollows oppose Chidori's expeditionary team, pursue them across the desert, and force him to awaken Hollow abilities after a mask fuses with his body. 31 33
- The Forest of Great Hollows is identified as the place where Menos Grande gather and devour one another in pursuit of higher evolution. 72
- Chidori's uncontrolled Hollowfication demonstrates the danger of Hollow power: in full Hollow form, he loses rationality, attacks allies and enemies alike, and relies on overwhelming regeneration and Ceros. 90 91 96
- Later Hollow incursions, including attacks involving Gillians, Adjuchas, and Vasto Lordes, remain a recurring threat to the Gotei 13 and the Rukon District. 213 214 328
