Seeing Zhang Xiaohua standing tall atop the carriage, one of the Human-Faced Monkeys immediately halted and let out several shrill, stern cries. The Human-Faced Monkeys that had been about to charge forward promptly stopped as well, shrinking back submissively. The Giant Apes behind them seemed to have spotted Zhang Xiaohua too; they growled low in their throats but dared not take another step forward.
The people on Zhang Xiaohua's side were in even worse shape. Lu Chaoxian and the others had gone deathly pale, their hands and feet trembling. They nearly wanted to leap from the carriage and flee for their lives, but with their limbs numb and weak, how could they move even half a step?
Thus, nine people and a pack of beasts faced one another in an awkward standoff, while only the dense raindrops continued to fall with a pitter-patter.
Seeing the Human-Faced Monkeys and Giant Apes hesitating, wanting to advance yet too cowed to do so lightly, Zhang Xiaohua smiled at the corner of his mouth. He sprang into the air and jumped down, landing directly before the carriage. With a splat, muddy water burst up from the ground and sprayed toward the Giant Apes.
Then came a swish. The Human-Faced Monkey standing at the front was splattered all over with mud, while the tall giant ape beside it had much of the muck splashed onto its legs as well. The Human-Faced Monkey jumped in fright, and the giant ape beside it also sprang backward. But once they moved, the already nervous Human-Faced Monkeys and giant apes behind them were startled. With a howl, they turned and bolted. The two that had just jumped back were terrified too, and without even looking behind them, they cried out and followed the others in a frantic rout!
