Kraft Lee is a fourteen-year-old boy.
Seven years ago, he was abducted by the Maggia from an unknown location. The Maggia subjected him and a large group of other captives to numerous human experiments. After one particular experiment, Kraft began to have constant dreams. These dreams were filled with visions of unfamiliar people and even other creatures engaged in invention and creation.
Initially, these dreams were fragmented and chaotic, occurring one after another without end. This left Kraft in a daze for a long time, and with such a massive influx of information into his young mind, he also developed a high fever.
Then, while he was in a semi-conscious state, something happened within the Maggia organization, allowing the captives to find an opportunity and escape from the Maggia's experimental base. In a rare moment of clarity, he tightly clung to another person with yellow skin, and they were fortunate enough to escape together.
The person he clung to was Kraft's current adoptive father, Martin Lee.
Whether it was due to the experiments or the overwhelming amount of content from his dreams, when Kraft finally emerged from his dazed state, his memories from before being captured by the Maggia had vanished. He couldn't even remember his own name, as he had only been given a simple numerical designation as an experimental subject by the Maggia.
So, Kraft took Martin's surname and, inspired by his dreams, gave himself the name Kraft (Craft). The first name that came to his mind was Lovecraft, but for some reason, he felt something was off about it, so he eventually removed the "Love" part.
When he and Martin Lee first escaped from the Maggia, they didn't even have any identification. While a fake driver's license could get them through most checks in America, their Asian identity always led to extra scrutiny. They eventually ended up in New York's Chinatown, where they gradually established themselves with the help of other Chinese immigrants.
After settling down, their lives seemed to improve as if someone was helping them. Martin Lee was even awarded the Medal of Freedom by the President himself, giving him and Kraft genuine identities.
However, even so, Kraft held no fondness for white or black people, nor did he particularly value his American citizenship. Kraft's greatest wish was to save enough money one day to return to the other side of the ocean.
So, when Martin Lee spent a large sum of money to buy the clothing store where he used to work and converted it into the FEAST homeless shelter, Kraft had a huge argument with him.
But as Kraft grew older, his prejudiced nature gradually improved. Especially after meeting a few kind-hearted white and black people, Kraft found it difficult to develop positive feelings for people of other skin colors, but he no longer judged them all with the same harshness.
As their lives gradually improved, Kraft began to try and recreate the inventions and creations from his dreams. Although the dreams were initially fragmented and he couldn't make sense of the content, as Kraft emerged from his dazed state, his dreams gradually became more coherent and complete. However, he had no control over when he dreamed or what he dreamed about.
Furthermore, due to his limited knowledge and skills, Kraft couldn't understand many of the things in his dreams, and he couldn't even replicate them by simply copying.
Adding to that, Martin was very strict with his allowance, so Kraft didn't have enough funds to experiment with the inventions from his dreams.
Until one day, Kraft dreamed of an old Chinese man in ancient clothing. The old man claimed to be a disciple of the Mohist School. The dream involved the old man making various strange and peculiar gadgets out of wood while teaching a group of children a technique called Mechanism Arts.
After waking up, Kraft took out his meager savings, bought a few basic carving tools, and gathered some discarded wood. He attempted to create the simplest Mechanical Lock, then took it to school and bet with others to see who could unlock it, earning his first pot of gold.
Although it wasn't enough to cover the cost of his tools, Kraft was still very happy.
Later, he specifically looked up records about the Mohist School. However, there were no relevant books in America. He eventually wandered through Chinatown and, after asking an old doctor at a Traditional Chinese Medicine Shop, he learned about the concept of the Mohist School.
Unfortunately, he only had two dreams about the Mohist School before they shifted to dreams that completely baffled him...
A phoenix made of paper that could actually breathe fire! Are you serious?!
Even with Kraft's limited knowledge, he could tell that some dreams were not set in his own world... Who has a body made entirely of paper? And the entire world's objects are made of paper...
This is completely unscientific, alright!
Later, Kraft had a few more scattered dreams about the Mohist School's Mechanism Arts, but the protagonist in the dreams was no longer that old man, and the world might not even have been the same.
Kraft could understand making Mechanical Puppets out of wood that could perform repetitive mechanical movements. But making a Mechanical Tiger out of wood, then carving a few glowing Runes on it, and having it move freely and even speak human language seemed a bit too much.
However, even though he frequently encountered dreams he couldn't understand, he managed to earn a considerable amount of money by replicating other small gadgets from his dreams. Later, Fatty Liao proactively approached him for a collaboration, with Kraft responsible for production and Fatty Liao for sales.
Fatty Liao lived up to his reputation as the young master of a Black Shop, and Kraft's income increased significantly.
Later, Kraft dreamed of a long-haired man who called himself Shougong Geng. Inspired by him, Kraft began filming the production process of some of his works and posting them online, giving himself the ID "Clever Hands Doctor."
With the help of Fatty Liao, a business genius (self-proclaimed), Kraft's "Clever Hands" channel has gained some fame. His products are now very popular in nearby schools, and he receives many online orders. Recently, he rented a warehouse in Chinatown and plans to convert it into his private workshop, just waiting for the ordered equipment to arrive.
Chatting and laughing along the way, the school bus arrived at Vantas Public Middle School, where Kraft was enrolled. Kraft and Fatty Liao walked off the bus arm in arm, heading towards the seventh-grade classrooms.
The curriculum in American public schools is not demanding, and most teachers here don't push students to study. They focus more on developing students' autonomy, considering academic issues to be the parents' responsibility.
However, Kraft didn't need Martin to worry about his studies, as he was motivated to better understand the content of his dreams.
Although much of the knowledge gained from school was useless in his dreams...
Techniques like casually igniting flames to melt metal, then summoning lightning from thin air to forge it into flying swords were impossible for Kraft, even if he mastered all the knowledge in the Library of Congress.
Looks like my destiny is to follow the path of technology for this life...
Kraft didn't know why this thought popped into his head, but he felt it was very fitting.
Inventions involving mystical Immortal Arts, Magic, and other supernatural means could only be viewed as animated CG for now, just to satisfy his curiosity. To truly create something good, he had to rely on dreams related to pure technology.
Take Professor Agasa, whose real name is "Doctor," for example. Both the Anesthetic Watch and the Power-Enhancing Shoes are excellent inventions.
Thinking of this, Kraft touched the watch on his wrist. He hadn't been able to create the Power-Enhancing Shoes yet, but the craftsmanship of the Anesthetic Watch wasn't difficult. The core technology was actually the anesthetic agent that could quickly numb, was non-toxic, and harmless, but it only required mixing according to specific proportions, making it not difficult to produce.
The only thing that puzzled Kraft was that many characters related to pure technology in his dreams were Japanese, while Americans, who are at the forefront of technology in reality, were few.
Is the technology of other worlds' Japanese so advanced?
To be honest, Kraft was very curious about this.
After dreaming for so many years, Kraft had summarized some patterns.
Dreams where the protagonist is Chinese generally involve items that cannot be replicated without special abilities, like Alchemy or Artifact Forging. Or they involve forging Divine Weapons that are useless to him. While those Treasured Swords and Sabers that could slice hair and cut through iron were indeed impressive, in this era, even the strongest cold weapons couldn't stand up to a Gun. Moreover, the material selection was so demanding that Kraft couldn't afford it.
Then there are the technologically advanced Japanese, but they mostly manufacture various Robots. With Kraft's wallet, he couldn't afford such heavy industrial manufacturing either. He dreamed too rarely of scientists like Professor Agasa who invented down-to-earth products.
Dreams involving Americans, who are at the forefront of technology in reality, are not absent, but they mostly involve human experimentation, following a biochemical route. Kraft would absolutely never touch such troublesome things. Not to mention that he himself was a victim of human experimentation, just recalling the overwhelming Zombie Horde in his dreams made Kraft's heart palpitate.
The rest are some more miscellaneous dreams. Races that exist only in fantasy literature like Elves, Dwarves, and Goblins. The items they create generally involve magical elements, which are also frustrating things that Kraft can only covet but not learn. There are also technologies from aliens, which are mostly parts that Kraft cannot understand at all, and many are completely unusable. For example, a certain alien with their butt on the back of their head, the equipment they made for themselves is not suitable for humans.
However, thanks to these strange dreams, Kraft is now proficient in multiple languages, and can even speak a few words of Elvish and Alien Language, which are completely useless. It's quite interesting to fool his classmates or pretend to be a linguist online.
