Background / History

Nalan Yanran is Yun Yun's personal disciple and the eldest daughter of the Nalan Family. Though naturally aloof and proud, she does not look down on fellow disciples. Her standing as a member of one of the imperial capital's three great families made her the preferred candidate for Misty Cloud Sect's Young Sect Master position, strengthening the sect's political bond with the Nalan Family 4 34.

She refused to accept an arranged marriage to Xiao Yan of the Xiao Family, insisting that her marriage could only be decided by herself. With Yun Yun's reluctant support, she traveled to Wutan City with Xu Qi and other sect representatives to dissolve the engagement 6 9.

Xiao Yan instead issued her a blood-signed divorce letter and challenged her to a battle at Misty Cloud Sect three years later. Humiliated and enraged, Yanran accepted the Three-Year Agreement 10.

As the agreement approached, Yanran sought Xu Qi's guidance because she had encountered a cultivation bottleneck and feared Xiao Yan's rapid recovery. His instruction raised her from seven-star Dou Master to one-star Dou Ling 57 62.

During the Three-Year Agreement, she wounded Xiao Yan with Extreme Wind: Meteor Kill and was standing after their ultimate techniques collided. Xiao Yan then borrowed Old Yao's power, reaching the aura of a Dou Huang; Xu Qi intervened and later declared Yanran the victor after killing Xiao Yan 67 69.

Afterward, Yanran remained with her recovering grandfather, Nalan Jie, rather than immediately returning to the sect. She later returned with Xu Qi to Wutan City, intending to finally sever her connection to the Xiao Family, only to find the family massacred 74 79 80.

Nalan Yanran is a beautiful young woman with a youthful, pure demeanor. She was introduced wearing an elegant pale-white gown and is noted for her graceful sword-bearing posture 4 5.

Personality

Yanran is proud, self-directed, and unwilling to let others dictate her future. Her determination to end her engagement stems from a refusal to spend her life in a marriage without affection, even when Yun Yun warns that the decision belongs to the Nalan and Xiao families 6.

She is also driven to improve. Despite already being among the Misty Cloud Sect's strongest disciples, she openly acknowledged her limitations and sought Xu Qi's help before the Three-Year Agreement 57. Her concern for Nalan Jie likewise shows her emotional attachment to her family; she pleaded with Xu Qi to attempt the dangerous treatment for her grandfather's Brand Poison 65.

Around Xu Qi, her usual composure weakens. She becomes shy and flustered, but can also be unexpectedly forward, initiating kisses before his outer-sect trials and later confessing her feelings to him 4 11 74.
