- Later wears an eyepatch over his destroyed right eye 298
- Body bears extensive scars inflicted by Wilton 298

Personality
Garp’s affection for his family is expressed through harsh discipline. He wanted Luffy to abandon piracy and become a Marine, initially refusing to free him from Impel Down because he believed hardship might change his grandson’s path. He also readily punished Luffy physically when he felt disrespected. 49 50
His sense of duty ultimately collapsed under repeated personal losses. Believing Luffy dead in Impel Down left him grief-stricken and listless; facing Ace’s execution and Luffy’s later danger drove him to abandon his Marine obligations entirely. 73 157 166
Once he chose his family over the Marines, Garp became single-minded and reckless. He accepted the consequences of being branded a traitor, fought former comrades, and continued confronting Wilton despite devastating injuries. 171 172 180 309
Abilities & Skills
Unarmed Combat
Garp fights primarily with overwhelming physical force, using Haki-coated punches, kicks, grapples, and throws.
- Fist Bone Impact — A powerful Haki-infused punch capable of blasting Wilton into the ground and widening existing chasms. 170
- Grabbed Wilton by the neck and repeatedly slammed him into an abyssal wall during their Marineford battle. 178
- His attacks can inflict visible damage on Wilton, though they initially failed to decisively penetrate Wilton’s extreme defense. 170 171
- In their final battle, his direct exchanges with Wilton resulted in catastrophic damage to his own arm. 310
Armament Haki
Garp coats his fists in dense Armament Haki and can sustain Haki reinforcement through prolonged combat.
- Uses Armament Haki to strengthen his fists before confronting Luffy and Wilton. 165 170
- Blocked Wilton’s Haki Rays with Haki-coated fists. 170
- His Haki manifests as flames and patterns over his body when fighting at full intensity. 171
Life Return
Despite severe physical damage, Garp can use Life Return to force his body back into fighting condition.
- After suffering a crushed chest and a useless left arm, he used Life Return at its limit to restore his chest and continue fighting. 178
- This recovery did not prevent him from accumulating increasingly severe injuries against Wilton. 309 310
Endurance
Garp continued to fight through injuries that left him nearly unrecognizable.
- Rose from an abyss with only small amounts of flesh remaining on his hands and body. 309
- Fought on after losing his right eye, sustaining massive internal injuries, and having his right arm destroyed. 298 310

Relationships
- Monkey D. Luffy — Biological grandson. Garp wanted Luffy to become a Marine, but ultimately betrayed the Marines to protect him. Luffy’s deaths were the central cause of Garp’s emotional collapse and vendetta against Wilton. 49 50 166 177 298

- Monkey D. Dragon — Son and leader of the Revolutionary Army. Dragon’s rebellion had already made the World Government suspicious of Garp’s family. 49 73
- Gol D. Roger — Lifelong rival who trusted Garp to hide and raise Ace after Roger’s death. 139
- Sengoku — Long-standing friend and Fleet Admiral. Sengoku concealed Garp’s role in raising Ace for years, but stripped him of his Marine identity after Garp openly defied the Marines. 109 171 172

History
Raising Ace and Luffy
Roger entrusted his son Ace to Garp because he believed his old rival’s Marine identity offered the best chance of keeping the child hidden from the World Government. Garp raised Ace while also attempting to steer Luffy toward becoming a Marine rather than a pirate. 139 49
When Luffy was imprisoned in Impel Down, Garp visited him but deliberately refused to help him escape. He hoped the prison’s brutality would make Luffy abandon his dream of becoming Pirate King. 49 50
Garp was later implicated in Luffy’s prison break after it was confirmed that Luffy had obtained the key needed to escape his cell and Seastone restraints through him. Initial reports stated that Luffy had died in Boiling Hell, leaving Garp emotionally devastated. 73
Summit War
Garp attended Ace’s execution at Marineford and visited him on the platform. He revealed to Ace that Luffy had supposedly died in Impel Down, breaking both of them emotionally. 156 157
When Luffy unexpectedly appeared alive at Marineford, Garp briefly stood in his way, but Luffy knocked him down and continued toward Ace. After Sengoku ordered Wilton to execute Luffy, Garp attacked Tsuru and other Marines to reach his grandson. 165 166
Garp openly turned against the Marines after intervening against Wilton. Although he tried to protect Luffy, Wilton ultimately killed him. Garp then committed himself to protecting Ace, even if it meant dying or entering Impel Down afterward. 170 177 180
Wilton exposed Garp’s family ties to the entire battlefield, revealing that Garp had raised both Roger’s son and Dragon’s son. The scandal shattered Marine morale, and Sengoku stripped Garp of his Marine identity and Navy Hero title. 169 171 172
Final Conflict with Wilton
Three years after the Summit War, Garp arrived alongside Sabo, Kuma, and Crow to confront Wilton during the conflict involving the New Marines and Big Mom Pirates. He appeared to defeat and capture Wilton, but the captive proved to be a leaf duplicate. 298 301
After Wilton mutilated Kuma, Garp fought him directly on Wheat Island. Despite his rage, endurance, and Haki, he was overwhelmed by Wilton’s superior defense, recovery, gravity, and overwhelming physical force. 309 310
Wilton killed Sabo before delivering the final blow to Garp. He destroyed Garp’s head with a Haki Ray barrage and continued firing until Garp’s body was reduced to unrecognizable remains. 311
