Mo Ling is shown in one memory as a daydreaming student whose intuition warns him of danger that others initially dismiss, including a falling ceiling fan and an ominous presence at his home 475.

During his early travels with Li Luo, he investigates Relics and the boundary between dreams and reality. He identifies the connection between a hornless Dream Qilin, the Black Horn in reality, and the Red String Worm Mother, then plans to detach the entire Dream Qilin from the dream world 15. His investigations later bring him into the Needle Stone Forest's simulated Mineral Clan war, where he experiences how victory-driven power can become addictive 93.

Mo Ling is repeatedly forced into unfamiliar forms and roles: an Olivine Stone combatant, a Fishman Armor authority, a bronze ware, a Dark Race member, and a cube-headed human 93 248 717 774 1211. These changes continually complicate his understanding of his own identity.

Despite his power, Mo Ling is often confused by his own nature and frightened by overwhelming threats.
