Background / History

The Night Watch Team was founded by Zhu Yiwu and Wushan Village's Talisman Master. It exists to confront the dangerous Oddities and Monstrosities that threaten the village, including unpredictable entities such as Bai You. However, it has long been severely understaffed, leaving recurring threats unresolved. 2 44

Night Watchers face an exceptionally high death rate. Wei Fan's parents were both Night Watchers and died while fighting an Oddity, while subsequent patrols repeatedly suffered casualties from Monstrosities, possession, and Corpse Transformation. 2 15 18

The force is divided among four outposts positioned in the east, west, south, and north of Wushan Village. The North District outpost serves as headquarters during major crises, where the captain and vice captains gather to coordinate a response. 9 43

Organization

A Night Watcher who perfects the Three Yuan Battle Art and reaches the Divine Strength Realm is qualified to become a vice captain. 27

Duties and Procedures

• Patrol Wushan Village's walls and districts at night, locating Monstrosities that have adapted to the Monster Suppressing Stones or entered the village. 20
• Eliminate hostile Monstrosities; those that wander into the village without showing hostility are not necessarily attacked. 20
• Use signal flares to request reinforcements:
  • Yellow flare — an enemy the patrol cannot fight and an immediate mortal threat.
  • Red flare — multiple invading Monstrosities, a Grievance-level threat, or danger to the entire village. 15
• Test personnel with Monstrosity Detection Talismans after suspicious encounters or before returning to the outpost, as some entities can possess humans. 15 17
• Recover and cremate fallen members promptly. Uncremated corpses can undergo Corpse Transformation, gaining great strength and steel-like skin while attacking living beings on instinct. 18

• Black tight-fitting uniform — standard Night Watch attire. 11
• Steel saber — standard weapon; recruits may select a weapon from the armory. 10 11
• Silver Light Saber Art — a fast saber technique taught free to Night Watch Team members. 11
• Little Flame Talisman — applied to a blade to give it red-hot, fire-like power capable of harming Oddities; regular members may hold one at a time. 10 12
• Sharp Blade Talisman — issued to vice captains alongside their additional Little Flame Talismans. 10 28
• Monstrosity Detection Talisman — checks whether a person has been possessed by a Monstrosity. 15
• Signal Flares — yellow and red emergency signals used to summon support. 15
• Advanced Little Flame Talismans and secret medicine — supplied by the Talisman Master before the Calamity of Strangeness; the medicine temporarily increases combat power. 44

Story Role / Major Incidents

• The team responds to Bai You-related deaths by burning victims' bodies. When Yu Dafu and his son's corpses mutate into Oddities, the Night Watchers immediately destroy them. 5
• Shi Meng recruits Wei Fan after learning that he defeated Bai You and cultivated the Tiger's Breath Art to its third level. Wei Fan receives the Three Yuan Battle Art, housing in the inner ring, rations, and wages. 9 13
• A surge in Monstrosity activity causes repeated East District casualties. Wang La and another Night Watcher die during this period, leaving the unit increasingly fearful and undermanned. 15 18
• A South District squad is annihilated after five Night Watchers, including Zhao Hu, are controlled through transparent threads. Wei Fan discovers the threads and severs them. 23
• Lu Qingshan confronts the White Grievance-level Puppet Demon Spider behind the thread-controlled corpses. Wei Fan kills the spider after Lu is poisoned, leading to Wei's promotion to vice captain. 24 26 27
• As the Calamity of Strangeness approaches, the vice captains assemble at the North District headquarters and receive emergency Talismans and secret medicine from the Talisman Master. 43 44
• During the mass Monstrosity invasion of Wushan Village, regular Night Watchers are quickly overwhelmed and devoured. By the battle's later stages, the regular force is almost completely destroyed. 48 49
