Konoha and defection

Orochimaru was Hiruzen Sarutobi's student and one of Konoha's Legendary Sannin. During the Chunin Exams, he served as chief examiner for the Forest of Death stage and took an amused interest in Obito's unusually cruel tactics 42 43.

His research interests centered on forbidden life sciences, including Hashirama Senju's cells, Wood Style, and bloodline limits. Danzō drew him into secret research with the promise of Hashirama's cells, but the materials and assignments Orochimaru received were largely unrelated commercial products, including barbecue sauce and milk-tea recipes 129 304.

After attempting to obtain the First Hokage's cells himself, Orochimaru defected from Konoha. The defection was publicly announced after he had already become hostile toward the village 167 304. He later admitted to acting against Danzō for money, while insisting that Danzō's broken promises had driven him from the village in the first place 304 314.

Sound Village and mercenary work

Orochimaru established the Hidden Sound Village, but declining mission requests and competition from other villages left his research operation financially strained 304.
