Background / History
Danzō trained under Tobirama Senju alongside Hiruzen Sarutobi. When Tobirama chose Hiruzen as Hokage, Danzō’s hesitation at the decisive moment left him with a lasting need to prove that he was Hiruzen’s equal. Hiruzen later recruited him as an adviser to stabilize Konoha; Danzō established Root and accepted the role of the village’s darkness while Hiruzen served as its light. 84 98 270
Active during the First and Second Shinobi Wars, Danzō became known as Konoha’s “Shadow of Konoha.” His old reputation and his close bond with the Third Hokage made him a prominent target once enormous bounties began appearing in his name. 60 69
Danzō responded to the danger by withdrawing into Root’s base, pursuing greater power through the legendary Sage of Six Paths’ eyes and renewed Hashirama-cell research. His fear intensified when Orochimaru—whom Danzō had worked with—attacked him for his body and the cells, then defected from Konoha. 60 82 129 168
After several business failures, Danzō shifted from covert research to open commerce. His enterprises eventually grew into the Root Group, though his borrowing, secret dealings, and flight from Konoha left Hiruzen responsible for nearly two billion ryō in debts. 125 196 245
Appearance
Danzō is an elderly, stern-faced man with a hunched posture and a severe demeanor. A bounty poster depicts him with folded arms and an uncompromising expression. 16
- Later adopts a sharply tailored suit, slicked-back hair, sunglasses, and a golden dragon-headed cane. 418
- His withdrawn period after entering the alternate world leaves him thinner and visibly melancholy. 490
Personality
Danzō is fiercely proud, stubborn, and deeply competitive with Hiruzen. Being passed over for Hokage defines much of his conduct: he repeatedly seeks power, influence, or commercial success to prove that he is not inferior to his lifelong friend. 98 141
He frames even harsh or self-serving choices as necessary sacrifices “for Konoha.” This conviction makes him vulnerable to paranoia; he repeatedly mistakes Hiruzen’s concern, financial requests, and protective measures as attempts to exploit or possess him. 70 82 113
Despite his suspicion and frequent failures, Danzō is exceptionally persistent. Bankruptcy, assassination attempts, public scandal, and the collapse of Root Group ventures never fully extinguish his ambition. 245 405 427 492
