The wonderful life they had imagined had vanished like smoke.
If the evacuation had not been halted, his family would have left this barren planet for a prosperous region.
Their child could have woken in housing provided for the families of corporate workers, breathed clean air, and played in gardens between the buildings.
Kent and his wife had watched the promotional videos from the major conglomerates. They knew how good the benefits were for their workers.
They could have enjoyed the prosperity of the central star region instead of staying on this impoverished frontier, working jobs that barely kept them fed.
Of course, things were far better than they had been during the great famine. But who did not want a better life?
Kent had read a little and knew something of the Imperium.
As the books said, the Imperium was undergoing a revival. Development was uneven across its regions, and many places might remain underdeveloped for a long time.
A frontier planet like Coruscant Planet, with no special resources, unique technology, or role as a transport hub, would probably take a very long time to develop.
They could not wait that long.
For citizens on frontier planets who had managed to get some education, moving to a prosperous region was the best choice.
But it took too much preparation and too many resources. For people like them, who had not graduated from the Schola Progenium, passing the tests to enter a major conglomerate was no easy matter.
