Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Immortal “Original Body” 79 81 253 His former body, marked by Lin Ke’s Five Elements Sealing, continuously absorbs Natural Energy and develops extraordinary regeneration. Its interior dissolves, leaving an unstable shell that becomes the source of later transplantation experiments.
Shared embodiment with Kabuto 210 A new reincarnation attempt produces an unexpected outcome: Orochimaru and Kabuto’s souls share Kabuto’s body.
Control of Kabuto’s body 234 Orochimaru’s consciousness takes control after Black Zetsu merges with the body operating as “Yakushi Kabuto.”
Sage Mode and enhanced immortal body 246 253 Uses Sage Mode, exceptional regeneration, and resistance to ordinary physical attacks. Securing this body required synchronization with Kabuto, removal of many earlier modifications, and an exchange of memories. His Sage Mode is later assessed as flawed Super Kage-level, approaching Tobirama’s peak strength while active 300.
Reincarnation into another world 354 After Lin Ke subdues him, the Main World Orochimaru is sent to a different world through Impure World Reincarnation.
Poison Snake Monster 399 Fuses with the new planet’s Natural Energy during reincarnation. His new body can absorb Natural Energy to grow stronger, though it also attracts monsters and carries unwanted hostile impulses.

Background / History

Orochimaru was once Sarutobi Hiruzen’s disciple and a contributor to Konohagakure. He became a missing-nin after secretly using fellow villagers in human experiments. Konoha’s advisors regard his later attacks and pursuit of talented young shinobi as further evidence of betrayal 77.

He also belonged to Akatsuki before leaving the organization. His departure does not end his conflicts with its members: Sasori later demands his organization ring and pursues the research obtained from Kabuto 145 151 160.

His central ambition is an immortal body. He treats Cursed Seals, body transplantation, and reincarnation as avenues toward that goal, but Lin Ke’s ability to restore the dead eventually forces him to question the direction of his own research 81 123 246.

Appearance

  • Pale skin and golden vertical pupils: Revealed when his samurai disguise dissolves during the Land of Rivers ambush 71.
  • Voice: Initially described as slightly hoarse and magnetic; later takes on a slick, serpentine quality 71 236.
  • Altered anatomy: Can extend his neck and launch his head forward to bite an opponent 72 246.
  • Kabuto’s body: After reincarnation, his outward appearance can be Kabuto’s, while Hermit Purple depicts an Orochimaru-like shadow behind it 220.
  • Monster incarnation: Becomes a Poison Snake Monster, although Lin Ke’s technique also tries to reshape the new body into a three- or four-year-old human child 399.

Personality

Orochimaru is patient, observant, and confident enough to study an opponent during combat. In his first battle with Lin Ke’s team, he treats their resistance as entertainment and calmly waits for Lin Ke to prepare another technique. That confidence changes immediately when his instincts identify the Five Elements Sealing as dangerous 71 72 74.

His curiosity rarely includes concern for the people used in his research. Once Kimimaro loses his usefulness as a vessel, Orochimaru gives him to Danzō rather than continue spending suppressants on him. He is more attentive to Kabuto, whose technical skill remains valuable, and reassures him that he is needed 123.

Despite his ambition, he considers retreat sensible rather than shameful. He avoids Itachi after suffering defeat through Genjutsu, declines to pursue Lin Ke before understanding his seal, and immediately surrenders when confronted by three Hokage 103 107 254.

He is not entirely detached from his past. Kabuto notices hesitation over destroying Konoha, and the lingering consciousnesses of bodies taken through Living Corpse Reincarnation affect his emotions. In his later monster incarnation, he wants strength chiefly so that nobody can manipulate him again—and so that he can continue enjoying the spectacle of events unfolding 93 253 399.

Abilities & Skills

Forbidden-Technique Research

  • Develops and investigates Cursed Seals, transplantation, regeneration, and interactions between chakra and Natural Energy 123 132 162.
  • Produces research sufficiently advanced that Konoha’s Medical Team and Cipher Department cannot fully interpret it; Lin Ke seeks Tsunade’s help 186.
  • Quickly helps reconstruct Tobirama’s unfamiliar space-time technique alongside Hiruzen and Minato, progressing to tests on animals, ninja snakes, and prisoners within four or five days 252 257.
  • Later collaborates with Tobirama across worlds and participates in research on using Natural Energy against Kaguya 280 323.

Living Corpse Reincarnation

  • Transfers himself into other bodies, with earlier hosts generally offering their bodies voluntarily 253.
  • Cannot completely erase a host’s consciousness from his mental space. This limits how frequently he changes bodies and makes Kabuto a particularly difficult host 253.
  • His attempt involving Kabuto initially leaves two souls in one body before Orochimaru establishes control 210 234.
  • Describes abandoning Living Corpse Reincarnation as part of securing his enhanced immortal body 246.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Previously summons Hashirama and Tobirama, then later resurrects Madara 234 246.
  • Madara’s reincarnated body survives Konan’s attacks, but its initial limitations restrict his strength enough for Obito and Nagato to escape 236.
  • Recognizes White Zetsu as an unexpectedly useful human sacrifice 240.
  • The earlier version used by his World Number Two counterpart requires living sacrifices and extensive preparation, produces weakened summons, and does not ensure their obedience 308.

Sage Mode and Regeneration

  • Detects chakra accurately enough to identify the revived Tobirama and assess the arrival of Hashirama and Lin Ke’s group 241 246.
  • Regrows a severed finger within seconds while in Sage Mode 300.
  • His enhanced body resists ordinary physical attacks and sustains him through Tsunade and Sasuke’s assault 246 253.
  • His strength depends on a system originating in Lin Ke’s seal. Five Elements Unsealing can collapse that system, while Lin Ke’s Mystical Palm Technique disperses Sage Art Chakra 253 354.
  • In his monster incarnation, retains Sage Mode and gains a body capable of further growth through Natural Energy absorption 399.

Natural Energy Disruption

  • Disrupts the Natural Energy inside Tsunade, causing her Sage Mode to collapse and allowing him to escape 246.
  • The resulting uncontrolled energy destroys her muscles and internal organs; ordinary medical ninjutsu cannot adequately repair the damage 247.
  • This specialized counter makes him dangerous even to a Sage Mode user with overwhelming physical strength 264.

Cursed Seals

  • Develops the Cursed Seal through research involving Jugo 123 218.
  • The seal erodes its recipient’s body and functions as an incomplete form of Sage Mode 93.
  • Uses Cursed Seals to regulate the Natural Energy drawn in by Original Body cells, though successful survival does not necessarily preserve a subject’s chakra-based abilities 123 132 162.
  • Later mutations produce stronger subjects whose seals escape his control, including the Sound Four’s Cursed Seal Three state 210.
  • Attempts to implant a New Cursed Seal into the revived Tobirama to exploit the opportunity presented by true resurrection 246.

Combat and Snake Techniques

  • Genjutsu: Places Lin Ke, Yuan Wei, and Xia under illusions through eye contact. Lin Ke and Xia break free, with Xia helping Yuan Wei recover 71.
  • Signless ninjutsu: Retains snake-based techniques even after losing the ability to form hand seals 75.
  • Snake swarms: Uses snakes to block exits and apparently assist Jiraiya’s escape from captivity 240 253.
  • Rashomon: Summons a defensive gate against the Earth Dragon’s boulder attack 71.
  • Earth Release: Emerges beside Sasori from underground before cutting apart his puppet arms 151.
  • Reverse Summoning: Escapes the battle with Tsunade, Sasuke, and Tobirama 246.
  • Speed and body modification: Outpaces Nara shadow capture and can retract an extended neck with unnatural abruptness 71 72.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Flying sword: Described initially as a Samurai Sword and subsequently identified as the Kusanagi Sword. It curves through the air, attacks independently, inflicts pain on the Earth Dragon even without piercing its defense, and severs portions of Lin Ke’s shadow 71 72.
  • Original Body and stored cells: His sealed former body supplies tissue for experiments. Backed-up cells allow research to continue after the Original Body is left in the Eastern Base 123 253.
  • Suppressants and inhibitors: Restrain the activity of dangerous Natural Energy-infused tissue and keep unstable subjects alive 81 123.
  • Akatsuki ring: Retained after leaving the organization; Sasori demands its return 151.
  • Experimental bases: Maintains facilities in several regions, including Northern, Southern, and Eastern Bases and a secret site in the Land of Earth 123 210 253.

Relationships

  • Lin Ke — Initially a desired experimental subject and enemy; later a source of reincarnation, access to other worlds, and research opportunities. Their cooperation never eliminates Lin Ke’s distrust or desire to settle their first battle 72 107 254 280 354.
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — Former teacher. Hiruzen initially vows to kill him if he returns, but later captures him alive because his expertise may help rescue Tobirama 77 252 254.
  • Yakushi Kabuto — Right-hand man, researcher, experimental subject, and eventual host. Kabuto’s need to be useful strengthens Orochimaru’s influence over him 123 133 162 210 234.
  • Senju Tobirama — A research peer who appreciates his talent while considering him a threat to peace. Their cooperation gives Orochimaru time to earn reincarnation rather than simply enter the Pure Land 264 280 355.
  • Jiraiya — Former companion who pursues him for years. Orochimaru apparently assists his escape in Amegakure but later mocks his hesitation to kill 240 241 252.
  • Tsunade — Fellow member of the Three Ninja and a pursuer. Her physical superiority does not prevent Orochimaru from disabling her through Natural Energy interference 241 246.
  • Shimura Danzō — Covert trading partner. Exchanges include experimental subjects, Cursed Seal information, and intelligence about Lin Ke 107 123 129.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Capture target whose Cursed Seal Kabuto uses to encourage defection. Sasuke rejects the offer and later attacks Orochimaru with Susanoo 93 104 246.
  • Kimimaro — Formerly favored vessel, discarded after Original Body transplantation destroys his usable powers 123.
  • Jugo — Source of Cursed Seal research and a later transplantation subject. The enhanced body forces him to consume living cells to survive 218.
  • Sasori — Former organizational associate, adversary, and prospective collaborator interested in Cursed Seals and Original Body research 142 151 160.
  • Madara Uchiha — Resurrected through Orochimaru’s technique. Orochimaru outwardly serves him but anticipates his defeat once Hashirama returns 234 236 241.
  • Black Zetsu — Unstable associate whose control Orochimaru overcomes. He questions Zetsu’s claimed identity and covertly undermines its handling of prisoners 234 240.
  • Konan — Captures her but preserves her life because death could expose information through Lin Ke’s connection to the Pure Land. Later tells her she can escape 236 240.
  • Saitama — His new-world encounter triggers overwhelming danger signals despite Saitama’s unassuming appearance. Orochimaru investigates him and learns that he is the C-Class hero ranked 388th, “Bald Cape Man” 399.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Land of Rivers Ambush

Orochimaru reveals himself from the samurai leader’s disguise, stabbing Nara Yan Shui through the shoulder. The detailed account leaves the merchant as a separate person thrown from the overturned palanquin. Orochimaru boards Lin Ke’s Earth Dragon, uses Genjutsu and his flying sword, and studies the team’s resistance 71.

Lin Ke eventually lands Five Elements Sealing, preventing safe hand-seal formation. Orochimaru is forced into retreat, and replacing his damaged hands fails to remove the seal’s effects 74 75 79.

Konoha Crush

Orochimaru infiltrates Konoha, leaves Sasuke’s capture to Kabuto, and coordinates an invasion with Sunagakure. The operation fails to kill Hiruzen, destroy Konoha, or capture either Sasuke or Lin Ke 93 101 107.

Afterward, he refuses an immediate new capture attempt. Lin Ke’s ability to destroy Cursed Seals, sever chakra, and use Natural Energy makes further confrontation potentially fatal 107.

Original Body Experiments

Research on his sealed former body leads to tissue transplantation experiments. Kimimaro survives but loses his usable powers; subsequent research turns toward Cursed Seal subjects and eventually ordinary people 123 132.

The Sound Four achieve Cursed Seal Three, then rebel alongside other mutated subjects. Kabuto suppresses the uprising but severely injures Orochimaru’s body. Further experiments and reincarnation produce their shared-body condition 210.

Abandoned facilities leave behind injured captives and subjects driven to consume living cells. These consequences keep Orochimaru a priority target even as Lin Ke gains other opportunities for training 209 211 218.

Madara’s Resurrection and the Three Ninja Reunion

Operating through Kabuto’s body, Orochimaru resurrects Madara and becomes involved in the takeover of Amegakure. He captures Konan, questions Zetsu’s motives, and apparently helps Jiraiya escape 234 236 240.

Tsunade’s arrival reunites the Three Ninja, but Orochimaru refuses to return with her. During the ensuing pursuit, he becomes fascinated by the living, child-sized Tobirama, attempts to implant a Cursed Seal, disables Tsunade, and escapes 241 246.

Capture and Cross-World Research

At the Eastern Base, Orochimaru immediately surrenders to Hashirama, Minato, and Hiruzen. Minato marks him with Flying Thunder God, while Lin Ke threatens him with Five Elements Unsealing 254.

Konoha needs his expertise to reconstruct the technique behind Tobirama’s disappearance. He contributes to the successful research, then becomes a collaborator whose loyalty rests largely on access to reincarnation and other worlds 257 264 280.

Reckoning at Kannabi Bridge

Lin Ke confronts three Orochimarus at the experimental base and strips away their Sage Mode advantages. He sends the Main World Orochimaru into another world through reincarnation, kills the World Number Four version, and spares the World Number Two version 354.

Tobirama subsequently acknowledges that their research partnership had also delayed Orochimaru’s reckoning. He regrets losing a gifted colleague but still judges him dangerous to peace 355.

Poison Snake Monster and Saitama

In his new world, Orochimaru settles in Z City’s deserted zone because his monster body is unsuitable for crowded districts. He studies monsters, discovers his capacity for Natural Energy-driven growth, and defeats and seals a Mantis Shrimp Monster 399.

Saitama’s presence overwhelms his instincts with fear, then rekindles his interest in becoming stronger. Orochimaru takes control of an unnamed organization and turns dissenters into experimental material; after learning Saitama’s hero registration, he decides to visit him 399.

Parallel-World Counterparts

Version Distinguishing details Outcome
Main World Orochimaru Takes Kabuto’s body, achieves Sage Mode, and later works in World Number Two 253 300. Reincarnated into another world and becomes a Poison Snake Monster 354 399.
World Number Two Orochimaru Encountered before his defection, while serving in Root. Less extensively modified than his Main World counterpart; recruited through Lin Ke’s coercion and demonstrations of power 306 307 308. Receives Original Body cell implants but remains weaker than the other two versions; spared at Kannabi Bridge 354.
World Number Four Orochimaru Initially persists within that world’s Sasuke. Has extensive bodily modifications and uses the Eight Branches Technique during his final resistance 341 354. Overwhelmed by Eight Gates Shadows and killed during Lin Ke’s reckoning 354.
